Any bandbox gyms left?

Featured Replies

The worst designed gym that I have ever seen was the old Fleming Co Gym. It was designed like an inground swimming pool that sit down about 8 feet from the bleachers and then they had a second floor of bleachers. The walls around the playing floor were oval and teams sat on the ends. It was a nightmare to play there.

Where you ever at Riverside Christian? An old airplane hanger with concrete floors.

Notre Dame Academy, I know it is girls but their original gym had temporary seats on one side, a stage at one, and only a balcony at the other end and that is what the backboard was mounted on.

Do they still play there? For some reason I wanted to think they played at the old Lee's Junior College gymnasium now.

No sure, moved from that area years ago. But remember going there when I was in high school.

Whomever built that gym must have built the one at the old Falmouth High School. Sounds like a complete match with it. The one in Falmouth is still used sometimes for practice.

Wow .. pretty cool that old Falmouth High School was brought up ... my Pops was quite the player in that old gym .. up to his Junior year.

St. Patrick in Maysville is a true bandbox gym.

Before the renovation a checkered line was placed three feet inside the court to allow an inbounder space to make an entry pass.

It was really a classic when the game clock was a clock-face with dials. When it turned red there was a minute left to play in the period.

SK & Dixie both had old gyms that were unique. I'm not sure if they're currently used or not, but I know that as of 10 years ago there were middle school / AAU games going on there.

When SK renovated they turned the old gym into a library. I loved that old place, spent many hours in their as a youth. I always wondered what it looked like before they sawed off the North side, from what I've been told it was identical to the other side.

The Tiger Stadium of the 8th Region, big pillars and all.

And the site of what I consider the greatest All 'A' 8th Regional Tornament game ever played. JMHO.

I am stating the true definition of a "bandbox" and using those three as examples. Brossart and Silver Grove would be palaces compared to those three I mentioned. :thumb:

I am not sure Silver Grove qualifies? It has only on side of the gym seating but no balcony.

Just go down to Turners.....

That was my first thought as well. Don't forget to grab a beer on your way through the bar to the gym. :D

I hated the old gym. No room between the sideline and concrete bleachers. Not much room between the baseline and lightly padded walls. The lighting was horrible. It didn't really matter for basketball, but it wasn't very easy to pick up a well used baseball. :irked:

Is Berea College's old Seabury Gym still around? I know they built a new place but the old one fits what you are describing.

Thats what im saying, it's not one. :thumb:

I think Riverside still play their games there. I think they finally covered the concrete floor with some kind of hard rubber material. Wood won't work because the river floods the gym occasionally.

I believe Whitesburg's old gym fits the description of a bandbox gym. It was really a nice gym and they did a good job of keeping it up to date and clean. Of course the consolidated school now plays at the new Letcher Central gym, along with Fleming-Neon and Letcher High.

Heritage Academy I believe has a gym with the balcony...

There are actually three gyms on the Holmes campus...The big flloor at David Evans fieldhouse where varsity and JV games and practices are held, but then there is also what used to be known as the "senior" gym where younger boys teams (i.e. freshman, eighth grade) practiced and played, and the "junior" gym where the girls practiced. The senior gym dated back to the 40's and the junior gym dated back to the 20's or 30's, I believe, and both had/have balconies.
