Any bandbox gyms left?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if there are any bandbox gyms still left in Kentucky? I know of Augusta, but that's about it. Anybody know of any others?

I just started a project, and am looking to get some pictures and/or video of how these gyms "felt", with the overhanging balconies.

Any help BGP?

I think that Highlands gym would qualify.

Brossart.... Might be one of the worse gyms to watch a game in.

Certainly outdated, but a bandbox it is not.

Brossart and Silver Grove compared to Augusta and the old gyms at Beechwood and St Henry are worlds apart.

Eminence. Complete with obstructed view seating.

If you are refering to St. H's old gym on Dixie hwy. They don't play varsity games there any more. Don't know about Beechwood, but I think the thread is asking for gyms still in use.

Sorry...guess I didn't clarify that too well. It doesn't have to be an "active" high school gym. (It could have been at one time, but may be utilized now as a grade school or middle school gym.) Just looking for something similiar to what may have been around in late 1920's or early 30's.

The Tiger Stadium of the 8th Region, big pillars and all.

Morgan Co's old gym, now the Rec Center. Has a balcony that went around 3/4 of the gym. You get in one of the corners and try and shoot a 3 and you are most likely to hit the bottom of the balcony.

That's one of the things that I'm looking for!

Gotta claim ignorance here...but what's a "bandbox" gmy?

What I'm thinking of is those tiny gyms that had an overhanging balcony on one or both sides of the gym, where the crowd literally, was on top of each other. Many times there's a stage at one end. There's also usually not a lot of "extra" space outside of the court.
