Wouldn't surprise me to see Werth end up in Boston.

Or Washington. I think they'll be spending too.

There's no real upgrade there. Neither player is a plus defensively so lets not pretend you're talking about bringing in a Gold Glove winner. The last 2 seasons Gomes has hit 38 HRs and has 137 RBIs in 885 plate appearance. He has hit .266 with a .497 Slg% and an OB% of .331, his OB+Slg was .828. Burrell's numbers for that same period: 34 HRs and 238 RBIs in 913 plate appearances. He has hit .236 with a .415 Slg% and an OB% of .331, his OB+Slg was .746. He'll definately ask for more money and he's 4 years older than Gomes--where is the upgrade?

I agree with you here but I am not sure where you came up with Burrell's RBI totals (64 -2010, 64-2009), total of 128.

It was a typo, I fixed it a few posts down from the original post.

Yeah I failed to read through the posts before I replied, sorry.

I told Spindoc at lunch today this is how I think the Reds should do. First and foremost they need to try and sign Votto to a long term contract. If he doesn't want to sign a long term deal then I tell him fine, but you are now our LF. We have a guy who is going to be our future 1B in Alonzo, and we need you to play LF the rest of your contract.

I agree. If he isn't going to give them certainty at the 1st base position then he can play somewhere else b/c they have a guy who they can put there long term.

I think the fact that he is unsure is showing he may go for the money.

Keep the Core, Votto, Bruce, Stubbs. Bronson just keeps proving people who doubt him wrong but how close is he to his peak? I say stay with him, Volquez, Cueto, Wood, and Bailey if you can.

Being that Alonzo is a year away I see him being package with one of the young arms for a big bat.

Having said that I would not be oppossed to having Votto move to LF but you still need a strong RH stick.

Some names that have not been mentioned are Hanley Ramirez, Ryan Braun, and Ryan Zimmerman.

Regardless we cant expect Gomes to have another Career year as he got exposed late in the season in many ways.

Everyone is going to be looking for that hammer that can shut teams down like Halladay and only a few of those exist. We may be potentially sitting on a couple of those now. As a Reds fan I would like to think Volquez is that guy since we traded Josh Hamilton for him.

I love what Scott Rolen brought to the team in the form of leadership (both on and off the field) this year. However, with that being said, I think the Reds were fortunate that he played as much as he did. So, I'd be willing to package Rolen, Gomes and maybe even someone like Leake to get Zimmerman. If you could lock up Votto, Zimmerman and Bruce long-term, that'd be a good 3-4-5 for several years.

Rolen will be fine for next year he just can't play as much as he did this year.

Like I said earlier, the Reds are going to trade for Ryan Braun. :D

You can never have too much pitching. Why trade away pitching when you never know if Cueto and Volquez are 100% back? If they go down, then what?

In 1984, the Cubs won the division behind their pitching. In 1985, Sutcliffe, Sanderson, Trout, and Eckersly all got hurt at some point and they had nothing decent to replace them. Obviously, the Reds have more depth in pitching than in a long time.

If I'm the Reds, I would sure like to have Bailey or Leake to plug into the rotation if Volquez or Cueto went down.

Also, I get one more bat in the offseason through FA and stand pat on the pitching. Assess your needs in spring training and the first half of the season. If your pitching proves healthy, then move one for another bat.

Who's to say Rolen doesn't bounce back?

Rolen has a NTC

You don't get a player like Zimmerman for an aging veteran like Rolen and a platoon player like Gomes. He can't be a free agent until 2014 and he's only 25. You can't just look at your roster and see what you want to get rid of and expect to land a player like Zimmerman. He would cost 2-3 top prospects, at least.

Given the fact that he'll be 36 around opening day next season and acheived his highest total of games played, homers and RBIs since 2006 it isn't a good bet that he'll be better in 2011 than in 2010.
