Reds Hot Stove League for 2011

Featured Replies

I see no reason they shouldn't be able to increase that to roughly 85M.

Even with the Central Division Championship they only finished 20th in home attendance. So they didn't get a huge jump in revenue. They get Harang's contract off the books but Votto, Cueto and Volquez are eligible for arbitration so that will probably take up the money saved on Harang's contract. Also, since Hernandez didn't get to the required number of games his option didn't vest so they'll have to make a move at catcher (they may bring back Hernandez but they'll have to negotiate a contract if they do). They already have $50 million guaranteed next year to only 7 players--and that doesn't include Arroyo's option.

That 15 Million is already be put back into other players salaries. It's not like it is just 15 Mil free to spend anywhere.

40% of that will go to Votto.

Bruce might be eligible for arbitration so he would get a big raise.

Bruce isn't eligible but both Cueto and Volquez are. The Reds waited to call him up until late May in 2008 in order to delay his arbitration clock. By waiting until May they kept Bruce from being in the "Super Two" class where he could have been eligible after 2010. The Reds don't have to give Bruce a raise until after the 2011 season.

If the Reds really believe Cincy is a baseball city, they'll try to sign some big name free agents and raise payroll....no reason to trade away usefull talent if it's not needed.

Their attendance numbers don't back up that kind of spending. Especially given their televsion contract. Their attendance went up around 4000 fans per game and was in the bottom 1/3 of all baseball.

I don't think that's been determined yet as it's not simply based off o hard date. If he's in the top 17% in service time (he's at 2.125) among players in the more than 2 less than 3 category he's eligible for arbitration.

The Reds aren't picking up Cabrera's option, but they want to negotiate a new deal.

Doesn't Phillips salary make u huge jump this year?

11:$4M mutual option ($1M buyout of player exercises and club declines, $0.5M buyout if player declines)

I saw somewhere that the Reds wanted to meet him somewhere in the middle.

^ 10:$6.75M, 11:$11M

4.25 is a pretty decent bump

I thought he was going to finish outside of the Super Two threshold. If he is eligible I can't see the Reds being able to add any free agents of any significance.

Maybe so. As of 2 days ago Shelton on MLB.com acted like it had not been determined if he was eligible or not.

I think Bray is eligible also isn't he?

Yes. There are only about 5 that are signed and another 5 or so that are not eligible for arbitration.
