October 13, 201016 yr That 15 Million is already be put back into other players salaries. It's not like it is just 15 Mil free to spend anywhere. I know that. That's why I said if they upped the payroll a little. As I said, it's unlikely but that lineup would be scary.
October 13, 201016 yr I know that. That's why I said if they upped the payroll a little. As I said, it's unlikely but that lineup would be scary. I don't think it is that out of the question to add 5 or 6 Mil to the payroll. I am sure attendance was more than they expected this year and if they are good again next year I would assume attendance would be better.
October 13, 201016 yr Plus Fox Ohio's ratings were through the roof in August and September. The Reds won't see a penny of that extra income. They had already agreed to a contract with FSO.
October 13, 201016 yr What was the Reds payroll this past season? 72M is the number that keeps popping into my head....
October 13, 201016 yr 76,151,500 I see no reason they shouldn't be able to increase that to roughly 85M.
October 13, 201016 yr The Reds won't see a penny of that extra income. They had already agreed to a contract with FSO. Surely there's a clause that if there's influx, or eflux, of revenue generated by advertisement the terms of the agreement can be adjusted.
October 13, 201016 yr I see no reason they shouldn't be able to increase that to roughly 85M. I think that is a bit much. This isn't the Yankees. An increase of 10 Mil is a lot.
October 13, 201016 yr I think that is a bit much. This isn't the Yankees. An increase of 10 Mil is a lot. Not really. You have to think they made at least that much this season in net profits. With the raised expectations, an increase in payroll will only help ensure their profits will raise next year as well.
October 13, 201016 yr You can never have too much pitching. Why trade away pitching when you never know if Cueto and Volquez are 100% back? If they go down, then what? In 1984, the Cubs won the division behind their pitching. In 1985, Sutcliffe, Sanderson, Trout, and Eckersly all got hurt at some point and they had nothing decent to replace them. Obviously, the Reds have more depth in pitching than in a long time. If I'm the Reds, I would sure like to have Bailey or Leake to plug into the rotation if Volquez or Cueto went down. Also, I get one more bat in the offseason through FA and stand pat on the pitching. Assess your needs in spring training and the first half of the season. If your pitching proves healthy, then move one for another bat. Who's to say Rolen doesn't bounce back? What was wrong with Cueto to suggest that he's not 100% back? Volquez will also be fine. But, I agree that you can never have too much starting pitching & I brought that up in one of the Reds' threads. One of the biggest mistakes Cincinnati could make is to overestimate their starting pitching. Rolen won't be able to play 140+ games next season.
October 13, 201016 yr So if I'm reading things right, if the Reds were to cut Harang, Cabrera, and Gomes loose, they'd be freeing up roughly $15M from the payroll. A free agent to be that hasn't been mentioned is Magglio Ordonez. I've read he'd like to stay in Detroit, but they've just declined his team option for 2011. Could he be a guy the Reds could look at for say a 2 year deal worth a base of 10-12M a year with incentives that could take it closer to 14M? Another name available is Juan Uribe. He made 3.25M this past season, so I think it'd be realistic to think they could get him for somewhere around 5-6M a year for a couple seasons. Now I realize these are probably unlikely, but if they were to increase the payroll a bit, they'd be able to afford something like this and still manage to hold on to their arbritration eligible players. Could you imagine a lineup of: Stubbs CF Phillips 2B Votto 1B Ordonez LF Bruce RF Rolen 3B Uribe SS Hernandez/Hanigan C Gomes will be on the roster next season. After what he did this year, particularly in the 1st half, he won't get let go. Harang is basically already gone, and Cabrera is 50/50. I think Cabrera probably returns, but I hope not. I have little interest in Juan Uribe. He only plays 2nd & 3rd now, which are not big time needs for the Reds.
October 13, 201016 yr I see no reason they shouldn't be able to increase that to roughly 85M. Yeah, it's easy to spend other people's money isn't it? I'd be happy if the Reds sniffed $80 million.
October 13, 201016 yr Pitcher that I think is their best trade bait right now is Arroyo. Value at all time high and they aren't going to sign him for the money he will want after next year.

He's been playing SS for the Giants late in the season
