Reds Hot Stove League for 2011

Featured Replies

3 HRs tells me he broke down a lot earlier than the last 2 weeks.

1 HR per month. 319/260/240 the last 3 months.

He couldn't even make contact the last month. I agree I should have said the last month and playoffs.

I know it won't happen, but Adrian Beltre sure would look good at the hot corner...

After the year he just had, he is going to get PAID. He has an option for next year but is likely going to turn it down.

Bruce isn't eligible but both Cueto and Volquez are. The Reds waited to call him up until late May in 2008 in order to delay his arbitration clock. By waiting until May they kept Bruce from being in the "Super Two" class where he could have been eligible after 2010. The Reds don't have to give Bruce a raise until after the 2011 season.

It is possible that Bruce will qualify for Super Two status this year, but not that likely.

Will the Reds take a look at JJ Hardy?

I wanted them to pursue Hardy last year when the Brewers cut DFA'd him.

The Reds got 95 RBI and 95 runs scored out of left field. That’s the fourth most RBI in the National League and sixth most runs.

I don't think that's been determined yet as it's not simply based off o hard date. If he's in the top 17% in service time (he's at 2.125) among players in the more than 2 less than 3 category he's eligible for arbitration.

John Fay says the Reds believe Jay Bruce will, indeed, qualify as a Super 2.

I saw that too, but I think the truth is that they don't know. I think they're just preparing for the worst.

I find it hard to believe they do not know yet. It's a hard 17% number. Is he in it or not?

Update on Brandon Webb. I talked to his dad on Sunday, and his thoughts are the same of many of you on here, and that's the Reds don't need him.

I was telling someone this last night. The Cardinals are a much better fit, and that scares me.

It looks like the Cards might get Westbrook back, and if they do I doubt they go for Webb. Keep in mind they got burned this year by Penny, so they might be hesitant to pull the trigger on a guy like Webb. It probably all depends on the asking price.

Jay Bruce made the "Super 2" list by 3 days. The cut-off was 122 days, and Bruce has been on a big league roster for 125. Evan Longoria had the longest tenure with 170.

That means Bruce will be eligible for arbitration THIS offseason and will likely get a nice raise. Because of this, I'd guess that the Reds try to sign him to a long-term deal.

Bruce said he was open to signing a 5 or 6 year deal. Somewhere along the lines of the deal Justin Upton (Signed thru 2015, 6 yrs/$50M (10-15)) and Troy Tulowitzki (Signed thru 2013, 6 yrs/$31M (08-13))...

I hope they sign him to a 5 year deal.
