Voters have seen and know who Andrews is and at this time currently, Andrews stands a much better chance at winning Mr. Football than Rees MacShara because as one voter told me, "name recognition plays a large part in the voting process because a lot of voters never venture out of their local area." Outside of Central Kentucky, not a lot of people know who Rees MacShara is and like most of you who haven't seen him play, they will look at his stats and say"he hasn't played any quality teams."

I have seen a couple of posts on here stating that if such and such can win the title or get to the title game they can win MR. Football. If I remember correctly the voting is done even before the semifinals. Seems like I remember people around Boyle talking about his very thing when Brandon Smith finished second to Curtis Pulley because they played in the semi's and Brandon thoroughly outplayed Pulley.

 

 

I am guilty of making that statement. I had actually erased the 2004 Mr. Football situation from my memory. Now that you have brought it back to my attention, I guess, that's right. I guess I am just trying to at least prove to people that Rees deserves to at least be mentioned amongst the top 5 players in the state. If we win state, I guarantee he will have great stats and hopefully he will have earned a little respect statewide for his accomplishments.

Just a man's opinion, but I thought Mike Mitichell should have earned that honor. He is playing in the NFL... that should help justify my thoughts.

Still might be two chances to get to see someone you havent because its on a bigger stage, aka the playoffs and not the regular season. IMO dominating in those early playoff games could possibly give you a big edge.

Maybe so but Caleb Watkins is not as good or productive IMO. Fugate and Watkins play comparable schedules (I think Breathitt County's schedule is quite a bit stronger, but some would argue) and Fugate has better numbers and carries his team deeper in the playoffs. I think Watkins is a darn good football player, but would still go with Fugate every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

It's easy to say that when Fugate is the only player they give the ball to!:lol:

It is not a presidential election, canidates do not stay static. Weaver is out for the season, Fugate hasn't done much yet this year and the Patterson kid has been underwhelming in his performances this year.

 

We need to have the poll redone or start a new thread that includes kids that are having great years this year which is the intent of the award. I get tired of hearing about how great a player was last year, that was then and this is now.

 

P.S. - we need 2 Mr. Football awards 1A-3A and 4A-6A, otherwise stop suggesting 2A kids for Mr. Football, they play JV compared to 5A and 6A.

 

Really? Was Micah Johnson playing at a JV level at 2A Fort Campbell when he won Mr. Football in 2005 along with being selected as an All-American? It is amazing that he has gone on to be an "All-SEC" performer after starting out as a 2A JV player. I bet you next April in the NFL draft it isn't considered against him that he played for a lowly 2A school.

There's always an exception to the rule. I don't necessarily agree with what was previously said, but to act like they're saying that's the norm and not the exception is just silly. The other poster didn't say that there weren't exceptions.

No, he only sounded condescending in his tone declaring the smaller classes to be JV.

 

Truth is that there is very good football talent in each class, small or large. And there is also pretty good competition in each class. Beechwood, Danville, NCC, even Boyle in the past 20 or more years have fielded teams that consistently defeated the "big boys".

 

I also find the notion that an NFL player automatically qualifies over someone else for High School Mr. Football isn't a good qualifier in debate. The main reason being you would have to have a crystal ball to see into the future. The award is given to a High School Senior.

Wow, just wow. So, you think Iroquois is a varsity team, but Beechwood and LCA are JV teams. Amazing.

 

Every level has poor teams. Yes Iriquois is not very good but there are some really bad small schools as well. If you need to compare the best that 1A and 2A have to offer against the very worst of 5A or 6A then my point is proven. For more evidence see the score of the Central - Henry Clay game. Central will have a chance to win 3A again this year and was completely outclassed by a good 6A team.

Well, this thread has taken a wrong turn. To try and head back in the right direction, let me say there are players talented enough to win Mr. Football at every class level. Quan Weaver was a top candidate before the injury even though he played 1A. He has a D1 scholarship to Louisville. He is arguably as good as any back in the state. The only difference between the classes is you get more good players per team as you move up in class because of the size of the talent pool they pull from. When teams in classes 1A-3A regularly beat teams in higher classes, I don't think you can call the smaller class teams JV level.

I would think at some point Bryan Station's Tevin McCaden would have to be given consideration:

The JV comment was a little over the top. All I was trying to say was that it is a different level of ball. That's why I think they need 2 awards so the small school kids can get some recognition for their hard work.

 

It will be be fun to see how the debate shakes out.

I agree, there are good teams and bad teams at every level, and there are smaller schools that beat larger schools. But, thanks for admitting it was over the top, and we can now get back to the Mr. Football discussion.
