Ohio Approves Slots at Race tracks

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this belongs in the "Politics" forum or here; as its mostly a "business" discussion. With the KY Senate refusing to allow a vote on this issue, after it passed the House, and Ohio's approving this measure; this will basically kill race tracks like Turfway Park, Ellis Park (if it's not already dead), Bluegrass Downs, etc. Kentucky's flagbearer tracks, Keeneland and Churchill will be hit hard as well by this competitive disadvantage.

By comparison, tracks like River Downs in Cincinnati and Thistledowns in Cleveland have been taken off life support and will flurish. Argue the moralities of gambling if you will (in a state with a lottery, racetracks, and bingo on every corner); but this is more downright ignorant legislation by our lawmakers, especially given its affects on our State's signature industry in these economic times!! Thoughts??

So long Turfway Park....

Yep, they had a small chance but some Kentucky politicians and residents are so dumb it's gone. Keeneland can survive b/c of the yearling sales plus 8 weeks of racing and Churchill might survive b/c of the first weekend in May. It's a sad sad day to be a resident of this state.

On a side note relative to your comment, Keeneland reduced the stakes purses for the fall meet by a total of $275K for the fall meet. The spring meet saw a reduction of $600K.

Richard Skinner for the Enquirer had an interesting piece in the Enquirer about slots in casinos.

Tired of being the reactionary state and following along with what all the other states are doing and just putting a bandaid on the situation.

His solution, allow sports betting in KY and be the frontrunner with forward thinking rather than just trying to keep up with the Jones.
