April 7, 200917 yr All that matters is the scoreboard, but Harang pitched very poorly today IMO. If your #1 is going to give up that many baserunners and only last 5 innings, you're in trouble. He was extremely lucky to last as long as he did with only 1 run allowed.

I know he had a lot of baserunners to deal with, but I thought he managed each of those situations well. When you only give up 2 runs against a high-powered offence like the Mets have, you are doing well. Atleast that is what most major league pitchers would tell you. :thumb:

Harang's ball to strike ratio wasn't very good, but other than that I thought he pitched very well.

Pretty encouraging IMO. Run support is gonna be the most talked about thing with the Reds this year. Of course Santana is one of the best if not the best in baseball.

I said the same thing to myself about two innings in. Given how Harang was getting pinched on his strike zone, it will be interesting to see what happens when he gets a more generous guy behind the plate.

April 7, 200917 yr In a tight game against one of the best pitchers in baseball who was throwing no no stuff for 4 innings? Herrera could barely throw a strike and was throwing in the 70's. Gave up the go ahead run.... Rhodes comes in and throws all strikes. Give the Mets a lead with Putz and K-Rod in the pen and your not gonna beat them often. You can second guess all you want...I'm just telling you that's why he used him in that spot. Not to mention that he had a great spring and deserved the bullpen spot.
April 7, 200917 yr Who was available? A lot of servicable, inexspensive guys. I'm not going to take the time to name them all. Besides free agency, there were a lot of guys available via trade. The bottom line is if you wanted to get one, you could've.:thumb:
April 7, 200917 yr How did he not pitch well? One ER is what matters. Letting guys get on base is dangerous, but IMO, getting out of that with only one ER is even more impressive. As a pitcher, the only thing that matters is how many guys cross the plate. Harang pitched well, anyone believing otherwise is just nitpicking...

Let him continue to put up a WHIP of 2.00 and see what his ERA ends up over a few starts. You can't allow an average of 2 baserunners an inning to Major League hitters and get away with it for long.
