MrsFairFan
You definately want to wait on Disney World. If you are going to spend tons of money it would be nice if they remember it! Down by Mamouth Cave is a place called Kentucky Down Under. I do not know if it is open year round, but my kids loved it when they were young. It is a zoo like place with kangaroos. There is also an aviary that the kids can go into and feed birds who are very tame and will let you hold them. They also have the opportunity to milk a cow. Natural Bridge in Kentucky is also great. Very beautiful and there are a variety of nature trails for people of all ages. You can walk a short distance and have a picnic with them. One of the things I am very glad I did is travel as much as I could with my kids. They really appreciate it and it creates such great memories. Good luck and have fun. Our kids love to travel....and they love hotels lol. We are all about making memories.
big royal daddy
It's farther then 4 hours... But I absolutely LOVE Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA! The weather will be fantastic in April and especially May. May I suggest Santa Claus, Indiana. They are about 2 hrs. west of Louisville off I-64, they have an amusement park with I believe a top 10 wooden roller coaster, a highly rated water park, they are family owned, and they have "Free Refills" on all their Pepsi products. southernkyhoops
Dale Hollow Lake State Park or Lake Cumberland State Park are both much nicer than LBL. There was no Ice damage in our area and both parks are absolutely beautiful. Lake Cumberland has a really nice indoor pool.
formerkywrestler
Virtually anything. Casino, water parks, golf, lake, fishing, boating, amusement park, live shows, horseback riding, skiing and snowmobiling in the winter, you name it. A combination of nature and mega resort. Choose your level of rustic or plush. Very much family oriented. Lake Delton is on schedule for full repair by this spring according to friends in the area. Dells is a little under 600 miles from Lexington. http://www.wisdells.com/WisconsinDellsAttractions/viewallattractions.cfm Thank you. I may be recommending this for our bigger cabin trip this year. Royal Uncle
Sandusky, OH was mentioned earlier. Near there is East Harbor State Park. Great place! It has a public beach on Lake Erie that is very clean and has a lot of fun. The weather there in May is just starting to get warm, but it gets cool in the evenings. Nice beach trip without the huge crowds on the coast. Lake Erie has a tide that comes in and out just like the ocean. Also, Marblehead Light House is very close. It is something neat to see. Another trip into Ohio is the Amish country. Millersburg in Holmes County has lots to do. And if you are into the baskets, the Longaberger factory has public tours, along with all the shops in Dresden. These are a couple of different ideas that I believe you guys would enjoy. Plato
Cinci has some cool stuff. You could do Kings Island and take in a Reds game. They have all kinds of festivals along the river. The Newport Aquarium and Cinci Children's Museum would also make good stops for the kids. Take a boat ride on the river and have a dinner at Montgomery Inn. Also within 4 hours of most KY towns is Nashville. It may not be as kid friendly, but The Grand Old Opry is fun. Walk through the common areas of the Opryland Hotel even if you don't stay there. It's pretty amazing. Depending on where you start, Chicago isn't a lot longer than 4 hours. It has tons of cool stuff - Sears Tower, The Aquarium there overlooks Lake Michigan, Cubs and White Sox, you daughter might like the American Doll home store there, Take a boat ride and they'll tell you all about the architecture of the city and the story of the Chicago fire. Just a few ideas.

Fantastic places to go, but needs to be summer. Water would be nearly liquid ice in April/May timeframe. East Harbor and Marblehead beaches are as nice as almost any ocean beach. coldweatherfan
A lot of the the folks that I work with with that have younger kids have been doing 3-4 day vacations at the huge indoor water parks like Great Wolf and Kalihari and rave about them. From what they say, if you watch for the specials and have the ability to do midweek stuff, you can get some pretty good deals. I'm sure this list isn't all inclusive but there are several great cities that are less than 6 hours away like Chicago, Cinci, & Indy.

In the area, you can also visit Abe Lincoln's boyhood home in IN. Holiday World is great! We go at least once a year, usually in June. They have a great water park (Splashin' Safari) that is included, as well. It is consistently voted one of the "cleanest" family parks in the US, and it is very family friendly. Pepsi drinks are completely free all day long--they have these little huts all over the park and you just go right in and get yourself a cup and ice and then pour your drink. For a family the size of mine, that saves a fortune throughout a hot day! They also provide free sunscreen! Also, the park rides are perfect for the age of kids that you have, Mrs. FF. It has got several big coasters, too, so my whole family loves it. Be sure and check it out. http://www.holidayworld.com
