Happens every year, and often these 2 vs. 3 games are the best games in the state. I agree that the 1 vs. 4 games are generally garbage, but no way I'd consider chopping things back any further than three from each district.

Remember 2 out of the last 4 years the playoffs had teams playing their own district first. So yeah usually the 4 seed was still going to lose to that #1 seed. I be willing to bet that more wins came for the 4 seed three years ago, than they have the last two years when teams played their own district...

 

I think we will start to see more 4 seeds winning again now since we have two districts playing against each other.

While I agree there will be some blow outs, who care? Maybe I missed it, but people don't seem to get as upset when there are blowouts in the basketball tourny. People don't get up set when there are "blow outs" in soccer, volleyball, baseball or every other sport that allows all teams into the tourny. Why is it different for football?

 

While you are certainly entitled to your opinion, kids play football because they love the sport. If they get to practice the sport they love an extra week, if they get to play the sport they love in an extra game, shouldn't that be what matters? If blow outs bore you, then just don't go to the games that you think will be a blow out. The kids playing won't miss you, but they'll enjoy getting to strap in on and do the best to their abilities one more time.

Is it really the "worst week " in Kentucky High School football? Isn't it good that more kids get to play another week or maybe 2 or 3? I think anytime you have more kids playing football longer it is a good thing. More schools have an opportunity to play in a playoff that may never in thier school history would have gotten to.

 

It may be tough on the avid football fan that just wants to see head to head good football, but it isn't about that fan that gets bored at the blowout games. It's about the kids that get to play in a playoff game and be proud about their team and school. It's another week and they are in the playoffs. Good for them.

I'm all for crowning the team playing the best ball at the end of the season. Sending only the top two teams doesn't allow for "late-bloomers" and also ruins fan/player interest in the last couple of games of the season if they've already lost a couple of district games (and are therefore eliminated).

 

What exactly is hurt by having 32 teams in the playoffs?? If you're the best team, you still have to prove it on the field. Having four teams from each district make the playoffs instead of two adds one game...play ball!

I certainly don't agree with 0-10 teams making the playoffs but all districts are different. In NKY 6A, the 2nd through 4th seed could have been drawn out of a hat as far as I'm concerned. It may be an exception to the rule but no format will please all. The state added two classes to give more teams a chance, and even though I think they spread it out way too far, it is what it is, they made the bed, now sleep in it.

Can any of you stat guys out there tell me how many teams actually miss the playoffs? I know some awful teams make the playoffs, and with our football championships already absurdly dilluted with six classes; the two teams per district argument probably has merit? I'm sure in some districts, very good teams would be left out; but aren't we getting dangerously close to "Giving Everyone a Trophy"??

Not really. Football is the only KHSAA team sanctioned sport where some teams don't make the postseason. I will never support lowering the number of teams in the football playoffs until every other sport does the same thing.

 

BTW, what is wrong with kids getting 1 more football game in HS. Is it really harmful?

Several years ago I believe Somerset was a 4 and made it all the way to the semi's.
