Statewide Rankings - Week 7

Recommended Posts

First the Media poll:

1. Great Crossing (11 FPV - up 1 from last week)
2. Lyon County (5 FPV - down 1 from last week)
3. Lexington Catholic
4. Trinity
5. Covington Catholic
6. Newport
7. St. Xavier [Up 2]
8. Harlan County [Up 2]
9. Bowling Green [Up 2]
10. Manual [Down 3]
11. George Rogers Clark [Up 1]
12. Evangel Christian [Down 4]
13. Bryan Station [Up 7]
T-14. North Oldham [Up 6]
T-14. Woodford County [Up 1]

Others receiving votes: Frederick Douglass 25, Male 19, Henry Clay 17, DeSales 14, Boyd County 5, Bell County 4, Breathitt County 4, Corbin 2, Fleming County 1, Hazard 1.

*Great Crossing has tightened its grip on the top spot, adding a first place vote each of the last two weeks.  I'm not sure what results are driving that, but both teams are winning.

*Two Louisville school losses.  Manual fell to Butler by 6 in the LIT, ending a 13 game win streak, and getting them dropped three spots, allowing St. X, Harlan County, and Bowling Green to slide up.  Evangel Christian fell by 10 to North Oldham, which drove North Oldham into the top 15 and dropped Evangel Christian four spots.  And yet somehow wasn't enough for North Oldham to climb all the way over Evangel Christian...

*St. X got the bump thanks to winning the LIT and the two aforementioned losses, but it is also clear that voters didn't respect their win over Trinity, with a putback winning it that came clearly after the end of overtime. Trinity didn't drop at all and X didn't seem to rise as much as you'd think they would have.

*Nations Elite hasn't released their boys rankings this week - gave up waiting!

*36 teams were rated in at least one poll, one up from a week ago. Seven teams were rated this week but not the previous week - Butler (KSR 24th) and Danville Christian (KYHSSZ 24th) both returned after one week absences, while Breathitt County (Media 21st, KYHSSZ 22nd), Daviess County (KSR 25th), Fleming County (Media 24th), Lloyd Memorial (KYHSSZ 24th), and Murray (KYHSSZ 25th) all debuted.  Ashland, Campbell County, Cooper, Elizabethtown, McCracken County, and South Laurel all dropped out.  Ashland, McCracken County, and South Laurel were all unicorns last week, ranked only by the media poll.  Cooper had broad support last week, ranked by three outlets, but a loss to Ryle eroded their support.

*In addition to Butler, Danville Christian, Daviess County, Fleming County, Lloyd Memorial, and Murray, we also have unicorns (teams rated by a single outlet) in Pikeville (KYHSSZ 20th), North Hardin (Martin Media 21st), Adair County (Martin Media 23rd), and Madison Southern (Martin Media 23rd).  Every single outlet here had a unicorn this week, as opposed to the last couple of weeks when KSR and Nations Elite lacked them.  Nations Elite, of course, doesn't have a poll this week, making it a bit more likely to have some outlets out on their own.

*The consensus teams rated dropped back to 17 this week (from 19 the week before), with only these teams rated by all four polls (listed according to average rank and then alphabetically if tied):

Lyon County
Great Crossing
Lexington Catholic
Covington Catholic
Newport
Trinity
St. X
Harlan County
Bowling Green
Bryan Station
North Oldham
George Rogers Clark
Evangel Christian
Woodford County
Male
Manual
DeSales

Frederick Douglass (dropped from Martin Media) and Henry Clay (dropped from KYHSSZ) are the two consensus teams that were dropped by at least one outlet from last week.

*Sticking with Henry Clay, the ranking by Martin Media stands out to me as noteworthy.  Martin Media has them 8th, while the media has them 18th and KSR has them 21st, with KYHSSZ, as previously noted, dropping them entirely.  Their record is sterling, at 16-1.  But that 1 loss was a 26 point shellacking by Bryan Station. Martin Media - who is associated with KySports.TV, a Lexington area outlet - has outlier rankings on both Henry Clay and Bryan Station (6th vs. 10th, 12th, and 13th from the other outlets), both Lexington schools.  Then again, they're also the only ones to have Frederick Douglass completed unrated.

*Both Henry Clay and Frederick Douglass are reverse-unicorns - teams appearing in all but one of the polls.  Boyd County (unrated by Martin Media) and Bell County (unrated by KSR) also qualify.

*This week we have three consensus top five teams, as Lexington Cathoic achieves that status for the first time in addition to Lyon County and Great Crossing.  The reason for that is probably Nations Elite's absence - as their consistent rating of Lexington Catholic sixth is what kept them out of the club the last two weeks.  Lyon County, Great Crossing, Lexington Catholic, Covington Catholic, Newport, Trinity, and St. X are all consensus top ten teams this week, a whopping seven teams that are rated in the top ten for all polls.  Bowling Green narrowly missed, coming in at 11th in KSR's rankings.

*Cross-referencing with the Massey ratings, some notable teams that are unrated:
-Oldham County - Rated 19th by the Massey ratings, currently 13-5.  Rated with 16th SOS, winners of 9 of their last 10, with an OT loss to South Oldham.  Only real win in that stretch to hang their hat on is a win over Murray, but they also have a win over North Hardin to open the season.
-Ashland - Rated 20th by the Massey ratings, currently 11-5.  Rated with 25th SOS.  The Tomcats obliterated Madison Southern by 30 last week, who Martin Media rates 24th.  Also own a 23 point win over Danville Christian (KYHSSZ's 24th ranked team), and a 25 point win over Pikeville (KYHSSZ's 20th ranked team).  Four of their five losses have come to Harlan County, Campbell County, Corbin, and Boyd County, all of which are either ranked currently or were last week.
-Campbell County - Rated 21st by the Massey ratings, currently 13-4. Rated with 45th SOS.  Three of their four losses come to George Rogers Clark (by only 3), North Oldham, and Lloyd Memorial, all aho are currently ranked by some outlet.  Their other loss was to Mason County, who they had previously defeated on the road - their loss was likewise on the road.  The loss to Lloyd Memorial came the night after that Mason County loss.  The back to back results seems to have been what got them dropped.
