If you could change one thing about Kentucky High School Football what would it be?

For everyone wanting to reduce classes, give us your proposed enrollment cutoffs for each class.

Kentucky's current enrollment spread for each class is in line with most surrounding states, we just happen to have less schools that they do.

The system is broken and it's only going to get worse. Have's and have nots. Most want to look at the 1st, and even 2nd round of the playoffs as the issue, but you can start seeing it much earlier.

I’ve probably said this before.  Eliminate 4-seeds (and above).  Reward 1-seeds by giving them a bye and having 2 and 3 seeds play the opening round.   Institute enough tiebreakers to eliminate coin flips as a determiner of seeding.

I'm sticking with my idea. Two wins required to get a playoff game. Run everything as is. If a team doesn't have two wins, the team they are scheduled to meet gets a first round bye.

I like this.

Why two wins?

Why don’t their coaches enforce it? Why does it fall on the officials to be the fashion police? If they want to subject themselves to injury go for it!

I get it.  It's on both to enforce.

In the 3 years my kid has been playing varsity football, I've seen it enforced a total of 1 time.

Mandatory Play Clocks....

Funny story that happened this season at our place:

  • We built a new stadium and included new play clocks. Opening night, the play clock remote wasn't functioning properly yet so it could only be ran from the press box. No problem, we had a guy able to do it. Next home game, remote control works fine, referees used the remote and ran it on the field. Game after that, we tell the ref everything is working properly, hand him the remote and he says, "we're not doing that." So it came back to the press box.

My question is this for any place else with play clocks and remotes: does the referee have the ability to say "no"? Isn't that part of their job?

We have a person that keeps it for us on Friday Nights and is pretty spot on. We have never been told to put them away.  Some frown upon them at times but it speeds up the game and takes the guess work out of time management. Why wouldn't you want play clocks? It holds everyone accountable.

There is nothing worse than a opposing team holding you hostage because they know how to abuse the time. On the Frosh level it's really frustrating. Especially when a Crew forces a 8 min Quarter. Every kid on that field has prepped and practiced since Feb and to be told that we are going to take a full 10 quarters of play away from their season.

That is also something else I would change. 10 min minimum quarters on Freshman/JV Football. It's still a High School sport and not PeeWee Football.

I would be ok with 1 win.

I want kids to play more football and really don't want to eliminate games for anyone.

No way on 10 minutes. 8 minutes takes a half our as is!

Drop from 6 to 5 classes and each of the districts has minimum of 5 teams but only top 4 teams in each district makes playoffs.

I’ve read this thread and would like to chime in.
1) Drop to 5 classes. You have to crawl before you can walk. This would make districts with 5 or 6 teams

2) Eliminate weak 1 of the playoffs. The winner and runner up advance

3) Increase the regular season game limit (for regular season) to 11 to be played in 12 weeks. If you just want to play 10 take 2 byes.

One thing to remember, playing the finals on Thanksgiving weekend would be nice but having a venue would be difficult with the expansion of college football to that weekend.

I could go for this. And I'd add in @Voice of Reason's idea of a minimum win #.

I don't understand why they don't take the total # of teams now & divide by 6 and have as close to the same # of teams in each class.  Why is it that 1 & 6 have 36, and then its divided up?

Why do we have classes in any sport? I say it is to level the competitive chance to get wins and to win a championship.

If that is the goal then I think we should actually reduce the number of teams in 1A and 6A to 24. Then divide the remaining schools equally into 4 classes with 32 teams qualifying for the playoffs.

I also would consider having a relegation every two years. The bottom four teams in each class drop down a class and the top four teams move up a class.
