If you could change one thing about Kentucky High School Football what would it be?

For everyone wanting to reduce classes, give us your proposed enrollment cutoffs for each class.

Kentucky's current enrollment spread for each class is in line with most surrounding states, we just happen to have less schools that they do.

How about starting here? This is based on 30 minutes of rapid research, so, not exactly right but approximately right

-4 classes

-6 to 8 schools in each district

-8 districts in each class

-Either bottom school or bottom two schools in regular season district records DO NOT make the playoffs (whichever way the math works)

-Add a feature such as Indiana has where the KHSAA could move a school up or down in class every 4 years based on performance trends

-Yes, several schools will have more bus travel for district games than current model

-Yes, not every school advances out of district to the playoffs  Make the regular season count  Earn the playoffs

The class breakouts;

-4A = schools with 650+ boys (roughly Woodford County at the low end at 650 boys to Lafayette or Trinity at the high end at 1,150 boys)

-3A = schools with 400 to 649 boys (roughly Bourbon County at the low end to Christian County at the high end)

-2A = schools with 250 to 399 boys (roughly Metcalfe County on the low end to Mercer County on the high end)

-1A = schools up to 249 boys (roughly Fulton County at the low end to Green County on the high end)

Change July. Too much burnout by having the season go from July to December. There is no need for these kids to have over a month of practice before the first game. Use July to continue to get bigger, faster, and stronger in the weight room. Play your 7 on 7s. There is plenty of time to get ready for game 1 if you wait to start padded practices until the last week in July/first week in August.

Why do we have classes in any sport? I say it is to level the competitive chance to get wins and to win a championship.

If that is the goal then I think we should actually reduce the number of teams in 1A and 6A to 24. Then divide the remaining schools equally into 4 classes with 32 teams qualifying for the playoffs.

I also would consider having a relegation every two years. The bottom four teams in each class drop down a class and the top four teams move up a class.

Not sure why the KHSAA does the classes the way they do.  That's why I asked.  Because it doesn't make sense to me to have set numbers at 1 & 6, and then split up 2-5.  I was raised on HS basketball & 1 state champion.

I've gone to high school football games for as long as I can remember, but never really cared enough to follow it as closely as you & others in this group clearly have.  Before my son started HS 3 years ago, we just always went to whatever we thought would be the best game in NKY, regardless of who was playing.

Looks like #4 is out, ugh:

"The Board has spent the bulk of the last two years reviewing the changing landscape of both school enrollment patterns and transfer restrictions throughout the country and now clearly has its sights set on finalizing a proposal for membership consideration," said Commissioner Julian Tackett. "The Board will finalize that proposal development at its July meeting so a vote can be taken by the membership in September. Clearly, our members and constituencies do not want any form of a one-time, no-criteria, free transfer for every student athlete currently subject to Bylaw 6, so this research has been invaluable in identifying issues to help alleviate concerns about the rule without sacrificing key values around interscholastic athletics.

Can you explain that in lay men’s terms?

Get rid of NIL for high school athletes.  Do away with RPI (or at least the way it is calculated).

Any form of a one-time, no-criteria, free transfer is DOA.  The public schools/powers that be do not want student-athletes or parents to have a choice in their education.  The KHSAA has spent the last two years collecting information from across America to propose enhancements to Bylaw 6 which will restrict player eligibility and stand up to legal challenges.

Let's be real - in general, it isn't about education.  I'm not saying it's never about it, but kids are not bouncing from school to school to where some go to three, even four schools in their high school years (four of course, thankfully not common) because they think it's doing something to boost education.  If it is about education, they have the complete freedom of movement to do whatever in almost every circumstance.

IMO there is not a good solution to this problem.  I do not think the anarchy of just let everyone get one free transfer works, and the institutions seem to agree. Nor do I think selective application of the bylaws where some go through and some don't for seemingly very arbitary reasons is the answer either.

Probably already mentioned here, but I wish that Week 1 games would start during the first full week of September. (I also wish school districts did this as well)

Scrimmages in the first of August seem early. I’d also extend dead period another week. (Which would work perfectly in this scenario)

Ok. I’d say the kid with the best GPA would have no issue moving to another school the next year bc their current school doesn’t offer a certain class.

I agree, this has nothing to do with education and nothing to do with public schools.

It's about stacking your teams with outside talent to win titles.  Even with the rules in place, there are plenty of schools that fill their rosters with talent that isn't home grown.  Private schools have been doing this forever, but it's also in the public schools now too.  In NKY, Beechwood comes to mind, and they are public (while Independent, they are still public nonetheless).

Get rid of spring football.

Four classes.

No helmets until July 15th.

Weights and conditioning only in June.

Three week dead period.

Allow 2-a-days because there is no spring football or June time to install.

Define home grown talent.

For me, if a player is a freshman at your school and stays all four years at your school, that player is not a transfer regardless of where they were before their freshman year.

The transfer issue for me is all about varsity athletes changing schools.

I agree, to an extent.  I also think it has to do with having kids that reside in your district.  That is the point of a school district afterall.

I am going to agree that choice of education is not part of the discussion here. If it was about choice of education, then you wouldn't care if you had to sit a year to play a sport.

I think the current rules are about right. You can't transfer on a whim because you got benched. Transferring requires serious thought and self reflection. If you want to transfer, you can do it. It is easy enough to find a way to make it happen.
