The 2022 season for Bardstown was a tale of so close, yet so far. The Tigers carried a 14-0 record into the 3A state finals against CAL, needing only one more win to end a two decade championship drought. The thirst will go unquenched for at least another year after the Centurions laid one on the Tigers, leaving no doubt who reigned supreme in the 3A class.

If the drought ends this year, it will happen in 4A, as Bardstown finds itself stepping up a class in the new alignment.

The move shouldn't dampen expectations for a team returning the majority of its starters, highlighted by All-BGP performer Tyleeq Williams. The diminutive star is dynamite with the ball in his hands in all three phases of the game. He helped carry Bardstown through some injury woes to keep the train on the tracks last year. His offensive line returns mostly intact, leaving only holes to fill at quarterback and receiver, where Shannon Tonge will be missed as a game breaking, field stretching athlete to alleviate pressure on Williams.

Perhaps even more importantly, the top seven tacklers return, rounding out what should be a team capable of making a lot of noise in its first year in a higher classification.

Key Departures

Shannon Tonge (ATH) - 46 receptions for 858 yards and 10 touchdowns | 289 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns | 3 kick return touchdowns | 39 tackles | 3 interceptions

Brayden Clark (QB/DB) - 102/135 for 1,492 yards and 15 touchdowns with 4 interceptions | 248 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns | 19 tackles | 1 interception

TJ Greenwell (ATH) - 435 yards of offense and 5 touchdowns in four games before a season ending knee injury | 19 tackles | 8 TFL | 2 sacks

Key Returnees

Tyleeq Williams (RB/DB/KR) - 2,357 yards from scrimmage and 34 total touchdowns | 58 tackles | 6 TFL | 2 sacks | 4 interceptions | 3 kick return touchdowns

Amonti Marshall (LB/QB) - 59 tackles | 12 TFL | 8 sacks | 3 fumbles forced and 4 recovered including 2 scoop and scores | 11/17 for 194 yards and 5 touchdowns with 0 interceptions

Kyan Lydian  (LB/RB) - 59 tackles | 10 TFL | 4 sacks | 128 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns

Caden Ferrell  (LB) - 91 tackles | 9.5 TFL | 4 fumbles recovered

Kaden Stone (LB/RB) - 68 tackles | 317 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns

Aiden Riley (DL) - 40 tackles | 9 TFL | 2 sacks |

Kris Sauter (DL) - 42 tackles | 7 TFL | 2 sacks | 1 interception

Coach Clark will get Bardstown on the winning track with the talent that he has coming back. TyTY Williams is an All State Running Back. His speed and quickness make him a threat to score every time he touches the ball. More importantly he is a top notch Athlete. Can also catch the ball and on the defensive side he will put some massive hits on his opponents. He is a humble kid that has the biggest heart of most everyone I have seen play HS ball in the last few years. I can't wait to see him produce this coming season. Coaches in Kentucky need to keep an eye on TyTy for his Senior year. Plays basketball and runs track also.

So you take Boyle, Franklin Co., CovCath, Johnson Central, Corbin?

Not in a district with any of those like they would've been with CAL and Central. And also only in the west with Franklin County. However, their cross district in 4A is much, much, much tougher than what it would've been in 3A.

Right, which means in the end it is going to be much more difficult to win a state championship.

I would agree. Choosing to play up and playing the 2 seed out of Allen County-Scottsville, Calloway County, Hopkinsville, Logan County, Paducah Tilghman, and Warren East in the 2nd round seems like bad judgment. Heck that 1st round game against that 4th seed will be tough also.

The Tigers will return 7 of 11 on offense, including 4 of 5 offensive lineman, and 8 of 11 on defense, including the entirety of a good linebacking corps (rising-juniors FB/LB Kaden Stone, and All-State Championship LB Caden Ferrell are two names that should be on your watch list).  We are pretty close to having full platoon.  In addition, during the injury pandemic the Tigers suffered, several reserve personnel got critical game experience and performed well.  Practices will be iron sharpening iron.  There are good numbers and pretty good talent coming up to the freshmen class.  The offseason early morning and evening workouts have had the best participation numbers in my 30 years watching this school.  Morale is high, I repeat, morale is high.  Kids want to play for the Tigers again.

We have to replace a QB, and that is likely to be rising-junior Amonti Marshall. Amonti does not have the polish throwing the ball that Brayden Clark had, but is a tremendous athlete.  Is it a downgrade?  As always, much depends upon the system Coach Clark installs to cater to personnel strengths and the performance of those around him.

CAL and Central can and do take players from all over Louisville, and beyond.  We can't and don't.  50 of our 53 man roster last year played middle school football for Bardstown Middle School.  We have 4 high schools in a county of 45,000 residents.  The district was a factor, but the bigger picture is being in a district with teams that are like us and where there is a level-playing field.  let's ask E-Town in two years how they feel about their district.  It does no good to speculate about cross-districting or 4th round play if you can't make it out of your own district.  I think Coach Clark made the right move, but if it turns out to bite us in the rear than he is the type of guy who will own it.  In the end, he's the one paid to make the tough calls, not us.

You don't have to make it our of your own district though. You have to make it out of the district across from you. Sure Bardstown might win less regular season district titles with CAL and Central, but playoff success is almost certainly going to be harder in the current alignment than if they were in that 3A district.

that's not a guarantee.  The KHSAA has changed playoff formatting 3 times in the last 5 years, and done it in-season.  Until this season, we were playing our own district against in the playoffs.

I was shocked Etown elected to play down.

Once Central made it known they planned to stay in 3A Bardstown had their mind made up. Yes that 4A district 1 is good, but I don't believe they are better year in and year out that CAL or Central.

You are describing a self-imposed restriction by Bardstown, the KHSAA rules are the same for every school.

No, they are not.  But we do not need to re-hash that tired old argument here.  Central buses kids under JCPS rules from south Louisville and says they are on the "engineering track." CAL's noseguard my son was blocking was from Simpsonville. With respect, the "same rules" and "just work harder" arguments are tired and hackneyed.
