As far as going after kids younger than HS….now there would be legitimate, legal competition for the best players.

In a lot of ways, eliminating bylaw 16 would expose who’s in it for kids and who’s in it for themselves.

VoR I agree with your sentiments BUT can’t the parents and kids make the same decisions while in the 8th grade.

The family should have ample evidence from watching, talking to other families.

My fear (not really a fear as no dog in the fight) is that you will get more people involved that do NOT have the kids best interests at heart. Their are plenty of coaches of AAU, Travel teams, 7 on 7s that are out for THEIR own interest and not the kids.

Yes, they can make the decision even after freshman year if they haven't played any varsity minutes.

Yes, outside parties will CONTINUE to have influence.

Give student athletes one free transfer and remove Bylaw 16 and everyone will know who is doing what. 

What about the athlete who is a senior, new coach and it is clear the new coach wants to go young or the style of play changes so that it doesn't fit the athlete. Should he be left with no choice for his senior year?

Tax dollars are frequently spent on athletics…. Especially coaching salaries & facilities. 
 

Most places, gate money (generally football) pays for athletic equipment. That’s why schools play bowl games…. To fund the athletic department.

Chief as you are well aware a trip to The Fieldhouse when that place was full for the Tenth Region Tournament was a good bump for athletics too. Plus, the girls regional provided a little extra. If you had district matchups that were rivalry games that helped also. Most folks never realize how important those receipts are in providing a good experience for the kids. Would chuckle when I heard people complain about a $5 ticket price for two games  lol.

I can tell you that among the three public school and two private schools within driving distance of each other in Owensboro, kids change schools like they change underwear. That occurs in athletes and non-athletes. A teacher, coach, or principal dishes out a punishment that the kid doesn’t like, and miraculously the next day the kid has moved in with the noncustodial parent who lives on the other side of town. My favorite was the kid I knew personally who used grandmother’s address for three years after the family moved out of Nana’s house. 

Apollo’s boys basketball team has struggled for four years. There could be some light at the end of the tunnel in a strong 8th grade class at College View middle who live in the Apollo district. I doubt half of them end up at Apollo.

Figures of speech that use gambling terms may not be used in any of the high school forums (i.e. bet, over/under, spread, parlay, chips, line, odds). All gambling comments are permitted in the non-high school forums as long as they do not involve any high school sports, students, or student-athletes.

Honestly, the whole thing smacks of "if you can't beat them (read: enforce), join them...."

Not a real good look for the organization, more like a concession of defeat.

You should always look for a student that can bring the most value to your school.  Private, public, charter. Building a culture is the most important aspect of making a school successful.

Let kids go where they want. If the parent wants to move their kid, that is a family decision.
