Dawgs escape the leash, bound for Pond Creek

Records: Lawrence County (6-1, but unbeaten on the field), Belfry (2-5)

BGP Ranking: Lawrence County (#4 in 3A), Belfry (#9 in 3A)

Series History: Belfry leads 26-9 all-time

Table Setter: The Pirates have been the kingpin of their 3A district for the better part of two decades. So much so, that district titles are an afterthought for a program accustomed to competing for state championships. But for the first time in several years, there's a real threat to Belfry's district supremacy and it's coming from a familiar foe in Louisa.

Lawrence County is off to its best start in eight years and has achieved its highest ranking in recent memory. It's been a resurgent year for the Bulldogs and they're getting it done in typical LC fashion. The flexbone is alive and well with Alex Strickland pulling the trigger at quarterback. The shifty Strickland and backfield mates Blue Fletcher, Dylan Ferguson, and Douglas Hall combine for nearly 300 rushing yards per game. The Dawgs put the ball in the air sparingly, but it's a big play passing game - averaging 30 yards per completion - predicated on establishing the run to lull the defense to sleep.

It's an offensive philosophy that Belfry knows well. The Pirates perfected it over the years. This year, however, no semblance of a passing threat has emerged. Isaac Dixon began the season at quarterback, but is back to taking handoffs and pitches instead of giving them. Sophomore Caden Woolum (originally a WR) now takes the snaps. Few players in the state are as dangerous with the ball in their hands as Dixon. Lawrence County knows this as well as anybody. He's gone for 100+ yards against the Bulldogs three times and averaged thirteen yards per carry in the process.

Strength of schedule heavily leans in Belfry's favor. Toss out the Pirates' record, no one in 3A would have fared any better. We'll find out this week if that schedule has prepared them to extend their heavy handed district dominance, or if Lawrence County really has closed the gap.

Belfry has won 21 in a row over the Dawgs, dating back to 2003.
