What is your favorite non-burger/non-chicken sandwich?

Featured Replies

It’s been years since I’ve had an egg salad sandwich. I used to a one or two a week from a little corner store back home when I worked on the city grounds crew. Never had it with ham but that sounds good.

I had one at a place in Hyde Park called Carl's Deli once and thought it was delicious. My wife will make some egg salad every once in a while and I try to make up the sandwich as close to the one at Carl's as I can. Has to be on toast.

Deep fried Grouper Sandwich or a BLT.

First time I ever ate a real Cuban was at a dive in Micanopy Florida. Been hooked ever since. The bread is the key.

Pan Cubano. You can get it at Publix.

That dive wasn't the "We Bare All" place at I-75 exit 374, was it? :)

The mojo pork roast is important, too. A few years ago Publix started making theirs with some kind of Boars Head mojo pork and they were simply awful. They stopped because of the complaining. The Publix Cuban is still not the best, in this instance, but are handy grab and go meals when in a hurry. Obviously, Cubans are my favorite sandwich.

I have no problem finding a great Cuban, for some reason. ;)

However, there is only 1 Skyline and it's in Clearwater. No other Cincinnati chili places down here. I have to order my chili online and have it shipped to me in a can, Dixie, of course. My son-in-law has a business associate that brings me Glier's Goetta. Can't find goetta down here at all.

Location. Location. Location.

A little historical factoid. The Cuban Sandwich was originally called a “Mixto” when it was created in the 1890s to feed workers in the cigar factories of the time. It was called this because the make-up of the sandwich is from several cultures and countries, not just Cuba.

Fried or blackened grouper for the win, but there is only one place locally that you can get a really good one and thats because the restaurant owners came here from Naples, Florida.

Number two would be Philly cheesesteak, I don't care if it's authentic or not, generally they're all good. Third place would be any type of steak hoagie or stromboli sandwich, bonus points if its a thicker homemade patty as opposed to the traditional frozen patties you generally see.

For any of you all that like a good Grouper sandwich like you would get in Florida you can't go wrong with The Winchester in Ashland.

The #1 sandwich is a well-executed Cuban. Really tough to find one done the right way though. Cuban Pete's is pretty darn close in downtown Cincy.

I'd have a really good Italian right up there as well. Best in town for me is Fred and Geri's which is also a little spot downtown. If you haven't been there, I'd put it on the list next time you are in Cincy at lunchtime.

At home my go-to is the goetta and fried egg grilled cheese. It's awesome if I do say so myself.

I've tried Cubans at quite a few places, and I like the sandwich, but I just don't get the hype. None of them did all that much for me.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that I've not had a well executed Cuban, like you said, but none that I've had would make me put it over a reuben, BLT, or Philly cheesesteak.

When you get one that is done right, you'll understand.

And I fully agree with Swampy. The pork is right up there in importance with the bread. Both are absolutely critical in a Cuban that is done right.

Hamburgers and chicken sandwiches are actually way down on my list.

BLT, club or a reuben around here.

I love a good fish sandwich but usually only get them when I’m at the beach and can get fresh fish.

Last year I had a grouper sandwich with bacon and fried green tomatoes that was incredible.

I had a good Cuban a few years back at Virgil's in Dayton, KY.

Forgot about the Cuban.

It’s kind of tough to find them.

Kahn's Bologna, slice of Colby cheese, slice of tomato, crispy piece of lettuce and two slices of bread. Sometimes a small swipe of mayo. Deelish!

Never had a Cuban, sounds good but hard to find a good one??

Steak Hoagie and Italian for me. Funny thing though, I'm not sure I've ever had a good or bad one. They mostly seem the same. Maybe a thread on best of each would help??

For steak hoagie, I've had all the area pizza places offerings. None stand out. None were terrible.

For the Italian, mostly see above. I do give a slight edge here to Salvadore's in Erlanger. Maybe it's the dressing, maybe the bread, but there is a difference.

Chicken salad on a croissant.

That's a close 2nd for me, but I can't do the croissant. It's too sweet or something. I prefer a rye bread with lettuce, tomato, and a little bit of spicy mustard. They're opening a Chicken Salad Chick in Crestview Hills that I'm looking forward to.

BLT. or Penn Station Pizza sub. You can't go wrong with bacon.

Owensboro was supposed to be getting one of those, but they haven't started building it yet, and given the current situation with restaurants, I wonder if they still will.
