Will there be high school football this fall?

Disagree. There should be numerous treatment options coming in the upcoming months. As to a vaccine, I am confident the majority of the population does not take part in the flu vaccine. The last numbers I seen, flu was still in the lead for most deaths.

I am not advocating ignorance, but am against the extreme that a vaccine and its timeline are the only cure all. I as with anyone eagerly await a vaccine, but it’s not the only option on the table.

24000 flu deaths since October

47000 CV-19 deaths since January, most of which have been in the last 30 days.

This is not the flu, and all flu comparsons need to go away.

I'm still hopeful we can get the whole season in, even if it means starting a little later, and maybe cutting playoff participants. I can't imaging not being on the downswing of this by July.

Even with a vaccine people will still get the corona. Eventually we have to decide to stop living in fear and move on.

One interesting hurdle/problem is for teams that play out of state or a large number of out of state opponents. If we have a season then how we do it might now match up with other states. States already start the season at different times. Now it’s not a huge number of teams but it could be a very big issue for some.

Yes, like Trinity who play 5 OOS opponents.

My guess is it won't be that big of an issue. I think most of our border states will be handling things pretty similarly and if pro and college sports aren't up and running at the time, I doubt you'll see high school sports moving ahead with their seasons. And you've got to have a season before schedules can become a problem.

If school is back up and running come August, it would be hard to imagine there not being a season to go along with it. It may look different, but I see a season happening. If the format of school is altered or we're still in an eLearning setting then obviously the season will not happen in the fall.

I don't see how you can be so dismissive of flu deaths/comparisons.

According to the CDC the 2017-2018 influenza season is estimated to be responsible for 61,099 deaths in America. Of those 61,099 deaths 643 of them were minors under 18 years of age.

I looked at several different articles on minor deaths due to COVID-19 and in some countries none are reported and in Italy only 2 deaths of minors have been reported. The following is from VOX quoting the CDC:

Influenza, also caused by a virus that infects the airways, can be a very serious illness in children. Complications from influenza, like a subsequent bacterial pneumonia infection, can be fatal. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, since September, 144 children have died in the US from influenza in the current season as of March 7. Meanwhile, there have been no reported deaths from Covid-19 among children in the US so far.

Coming full circle here by what I see when you compare Influenza deaths to COVID-19 deaths it is clear that Influenza is much, much more deadly to minors.

Not being dismissive. Just trying to understand why people use annualized Flu numbers across an entire flu season to compare it to what CV-19 has done in 6-8 weeks. Also wonder why people dismiss CV-19 because older folks are more affected. As it relates to football and other sports, the issue is not how deadly it is to the players, but how they could transmit the disease to the people around them, including coaches, officials etc.

Using that logic high school sports probably wouldn't be back until the 2022 school year and by that time sports may not come back at all.

Also using that logic, flu death numbers are really low for minors too meaning the real risk is minors giving the flu to people around them and we don't take any action on that front.

If there is no football season. Means there will not be a state finals. If that is the case you may see the KHSAA fold. They can't miss that kind of revenue. The lost out on both Sweet 16 this year. No Football finals may be the final blow.

The KHSAA isn't going anywhere. There may be a bunch of cuts but they will hang on.

The larger issue is no football season means virtual school again. At that point every school is going to be forced to cut costs and some schools (especially small private schools) are going to take huge losses. There will not be any need for Athletic Directors, there won't be any need for brick and mortar, and virtual learning will quickly become more efficient meaning less teachers will be needed.

Moving forward, if virtual learning stretches into 2021 I would say all the coaches and at least half the teachers will be out of a job.

This article shows a little difference in the statistics of deaths for children due to Covid-19. It shows 3 deaths in the Under 14 age group and 21 deaths in the 14-24 age group. These numbers are also only the ones that have been coded so the total number of deaths in this report is only 23,000. Since that is less than half the number of total deaths right now, it would make sense that all the numbers in that report are probably about double of what it states.

Unfortunately that breakdown includes the 18 to 24 deaths vs. the 17 and under stats I have been looking at. In other words, we need a more precise breakdown.

And I want to add again here, only two minor deaths reported in Italy and as of about a week ago three deaths in New York for minors 17 and under.

Why does it feel like a Christmas miracle, if we have 2021 HS football?

Question, does that mean the end of professional sports?

Question, does that mean the end of professional sports?

Heck no! Professional sports will be starting back up before you know it.

I think it's a lot easier to mandate masks and sanitation and health guidelines in a school setting as opposed to a sports setting.

Trying to play sports in a mask would be awful.

I grew up asthmatic. I'm a mouth breather. Wear a mask every day in a warehouse. It sucks.

And never mind people touching and sweating on each other in basketball, football, soccer and, egads , wrestling.

So given the opinion of school or sports, I'm taking school.

(Granted my bank account has been crushed not having sports to cover as a freelancer).

Expecting elementary kids, or shoot even high school kids to sit in school for 7 hours with mask and gloves on is simply unrealistic imo. Teachers and administrations already have a hard enough time with discipline in today’s climate. Kids will mess with each other, mess with each other’s mask on purpose, take off their mask, breath on other students on purpose, bullying would probably be an even bigger issue, etc.

So while you can mandate students where mask, it is not a realistic expectation. It’s either one or another. If you allow kids back in schools, then it really is meaningless to not allow sports.
