Congratulations to Mayfield. The Cardinals did their thing but the Tigers made them work for it. Only one other team all year held Mayfield to less than 35 points. Mayfield is just a notch or two above Beechwood this year. Good luck to the Cardinals next week.

 

Congratulations to Beechwood on a very good season. This may have been the most challenging season any Beechwood team in the last 30 years has faced. The Tigers had to replace their entire line on both sides of the ball. Only 3 starters returned. They lost their most important player outside of Hergott, Josh Derry, to injury half way through the first game of the year. Most teams would have crumbled under the weight of all those challenges.

 

Then as the season moved forward, with more than half the starters being freshmen and sophomores, the Tigers had to work their way through a schedule that was the toughest in 2A next to perhaps LCA's. Four opponents are playing for titles next week and two others were just eliminated in the past couple weeks. This young Tigers team sat at 1-4, very young, missing a key player and playing in 2A for the first time in Beechwood history. How do young men overcome all that? How do they keep believing and working hard every day with all that weight?

 

We are Beechwood. It is a rallying cry that everyone in the community knows. From that low point in the season, this group of young men went 7-2. They turned the tide at 1-4 with a win over a 6A opponent. Think about that. Four of those seven wins were against teams ranked in the top 10 in their class. By Beechwood standards, this season may not look up to standard. For those who know the above about this team, the coaches and players should be loudly applauded for what they were able to overcome this year and make it to the state semifinals in 2A.

 

Congratulations Tigers! We all are very proud of what you accomplished this season and can't wait to see how you grow this off season and into next year.

Beechwood certainly had some miscues in the first half. They missed a big seam pass into the redzone on their 4th possession that could have led to a score, and had the ball in Mayfield territory right after their touchdown pass (and still before halftime) and the QB fumbled it back to Mayfield. A Beechwood score there would have made it 21-14. So that turnover killed any remaining momentum.

 

Gotta give credit to Mayfield. Big play after big play. First play of game was a false start, followed by a 79 yard catch and run touchdown reception by Neely. And Galbreath with two 80 yard touchdown runs (the first one had the sick footwork) that put anyone who hasn't been paying attention, on notice. Defense was dominant. Beechwood's first four possessions ended in punts, they won the turnover battle, and it took a 40+ yard touchdown to get BW on the board. Beechwood had five or six possessions in Mayfield territory and only came away with one score. What a way to end at home for the seniors. Go Red.

Kylan Galbreath rushed 17 times for 252 yards

Kade Neely caught 5 passes for 133 yards and 2 TD

 

Beechwood

Cameron Hergott 8-24 for 95 yards 1 TD, 1INT

Avery Courtney rushed 7 times for 33 yards

Parker Mason caught 4 passes for 65 yards, TD

 

I don’t think Stinson was that accurate, he seemed to miss a lot, but the running game for Mayfield was a killer for Beechwood. They just couldn’t stop it.
