Which team is the best team in 5A?

After last night give me the Colonels.

What do you think?

I’ve said all season that until Douglass beats someone good when it matters I can’t get behind them. Their schedule is atrocious except for Scott County, which was a good win. But they beat Scott last year and made a bunch of noise then lost in the playoffs to them. Covington Catholic is the best team in 5A.

This. Cov Cath has shown much more.

I 3rd the motion.

If CCH can duplicate what they did last night then give me CCH. But one game at a time. We can't overlook Highlands, all they want right now is to beat us so CCH needs to stay focused.

The Manual win was solid but not the giving up 35 points part of it.

I can't speak to Frederick Douglas, but after last night I think to beat the Colonels you need a qb that can pass the ball with accuracy down the field. Two key things showed last night for the Colonels: 1) Caleb Jacob played with confidence and was very accurate passing against as tough of a defense as they will see. 2) The Colonels defensive front made a loud statement that they are clearly much more than just Michael Mayer.

LaSalle got zero push vs. Cov cath, and their two Div 1 running backs had no room to run. That front is discipline, quick, and allow Mayer and Felix to fly all over the field.

My 2 cents...

After last nights victory I would go with Cov right now.

1 game doesn't make a team. Douglas has the athlete's/players. Cov Cath has some of the same and a bit more tradition. I'd usually say Cov Cath, but I think it really comes down to who is more prepared/focused when/if they do play.

I think Cov Cath. Beat a top Ohio team with several D1 players.

Don't forget Lawrie in the defensive front for the Colonels, he gets overlooked, but he is a force to deal with.

Give me CCH in a best of three series. But Douglas is capable of beating the Colonels in a single game scenario and that's all that matters in the playoffs.

CovCath. FD is still very much in the “needs to prove it” category.

Fred has rolled everyone. 6 shutouts in 7 games. Beat Tates Creek 62-14, and Tates Creek should have beat Lexington Catholic. Fred has major talent, more than Cov Cath. For Cov Cath I think last night was an aberration and they still are not what they were last year or the year before. I could be wrong, but I am staying with that. Frederick Douglas will win 5a.

1. Disagree on needing a QB that can throw the ball downfield. It is about being effective in the short passing game, and throwing it, throwing it and throwing it some more. Treat those short passes as extended handoffs. A 4 yard gain on a quick in or out route is great. Do it again. Mix in some out and ups to keep them honest but get rid of the ball fast.

2. The key for Jacob last night was he finally started connecting with Michael Mayer. I still think he is inconsistent and makes bad throws at times. Definitely room for improvement here.

3. CCH's defensive front does their job well. Like you said, they are all about disciplined attack and freeing up the linebackers. I think Michael Mayer is a better linebacker than a tight end, and we know how good a tight end he is.

That win last night is a big testimony about how much of a difference a player like Michael Mayer can make. I will mention one more factor that does not get stated enough. When CCH needs tough yards running the ball, they often run it behind Mayer blocking. He does it all. He was incredible last night on both sides of the ball making big play after big play.
