I believe overall Frederick Douglass may have more major talent but Covington Catholic's schedule and tradition gives them a slight edge. I believe Michael Mayer is the "X factor" for the Colonels. He is a force on both offense and defense. His size and talent makes him hard to deal with at the high school level by any team. I would like to see Douglass be tested and win a tough game. Once they get over the hump and win a major playoff game the sky could be the limit.

Did the Scott County game not matter to Douglass? I agree with CCH #1, but not because Douglass has not won a game that matters.

 

A regular season game does not matter in the sense that it validates FD's spot on top. Especially when they've lost consecutively to Scott County in the playoffs.

FD beat Scott 36-0 this year. If it was 28-21 I would get taking a wait and see approach. Scott Co. scores on everyone and did nothing against FD.

I'm taking Frederick Douglass on a gut feeling. I get that they haven't truly accomplished anything yet but I believe they are legit. Running clock on Scott County is no easy task.

Cov. Cath. Both have good offenses. Cov. Cath. has a better defense and has played tougher competition.

I find it hard to evaluate teams without seeing them in person. Stats help but the eye test is the determining factor, I believe. Without seeing either team in person I defer.

Lots of games to be played still. I hope this is the championship game. I've seen 6 CCH games this year and 0 FD games. Hard to predict never seeing a team play before. I know CCH has gotten better as year has gone on. Very interested to see how they do with Highlands this Friday. I will take Covcath because they still have a sour taste in their mouth losing that championship game last year. CCH and Michael Mayer very determined to be Champs again.

Flip a coin. If this happens at state on Kroger Field, CCH may be better prepared mentally with their third straight appearance in the moment.

Fred has rolled everyone. 6 shutouts in 7 games. Beat Tates Creek 62-14, and Tates Creek should have beat Lexington Catholic. Fred has major talent, more than Cov Cath. For Cov Cath I think last night was an aberration and they still are not what they were last year or the year before. I could be wrong, but I am staying with that. Frederick Douglas will win 5a.

 

I think CovCath is the best team in 5A but I wholeheartedly agree with everything in this post. FD has a good argument.

Fair enough. I didn’t think they would win it all last year and I do think they will this year.

They may be better because Caleb has another year of experience. Casey and Coldiron were two bigger losses though.

Caleb being a 2nd year starter is a huge reason I feel that way. Casey was awesome, but Felix is a big factor back there. Coldiron for sure is a loss, but that is mitigated by a solid crop of WRs and Mayer being another year older and more developed.

 

Gronotte is better too, which helps.

 

Jones seems much improved to me, Lawrie as well.

The loss of Boydsfon at RB could hurt at some point. Felix is an animal, but doesn’t have the breakaway speed B had.
