Any thought / discussion or idea about what OCHS might do about the anticipated Temps & Heat Index ?
Jim, this is interesting.

Down in Dalton last weekend it was 95 degrees and heat index easily above 100. Georgia's heat rules only come into play for practice/scrimmage situations and not games, which they categorize 7on7 as games. So they didn't have to deal with it. Although they did have 2 medical tents at each venue that I went to. I am told at the preliminary coaches meeting that event administrators emphasized to all coaches to monitor their players and forward any of them that might have heat stress issues to the medical tents. I'm pretty sure it's not the same thing in KY. Saturday might be the hottest day here in 4 years. We'll see I guess.

From KHSAA website

100 - 105 heat index:

 Provide ample amounts of water. This

means that water should always be

available and athletes should be able to

take in as much water as they desire.

 Mandatory water breaks every 30 minutes

for 10 minutes in duration

 Ice-down towels for cooling

 Watch/monitor athletes carefully for

necessary action.

 Alter uniform by removing items if possible

 Allow for changes to dry t-shirts and

shorts.

 Reduce time of outside activity as well as

indoor activity if air conditioning is

unavailable.

 Postpone practice to later in day.

 Contact sports and activities with additional

equipment

 Helmets and other possible equipment

removed if not involved in contact or

necessary for safety. If necessary for

safety, suspend activity.

 Re-check temperature and humidity every 30

minutes to monitor for increased Heat Index.

So basically since the 7on7 does not last longer than 30 minutes and only the 7 players on the field has to have their helmets on, it seems as though as long as it does not get above 106 degrees they should be fine. Also want to put out that this is just my opinion and I don't know much besides what I read, lol.

It's been re-worked a bit recently:

100 degrees (above 99

degrees) to 104 degrees

Heat Index

 All sports

 Water should always be available and athletes should be able to take in as much water as

they desire.

 Mandatory water breaks every 30 minutes for 10 minutes in duration to allow for hydration

as a group

 Have towels with ice for cooling of athletes as needed

 Watch/monitor athletes carefully for necessary action.

 Alter uniform by removing items if possible and permissible by rules

 Allow for changes to dry t-shirts and shorts by athletes at defined intervals.

 Reduce time of outside activity as well as indoor activity if air conditioning is unavailable.

 Postpone practice to later in day.

 Contact sports and activities with additional required protective equipment

 If helmets of other protective requirement are required to be worn by rule or normal

practice, suspend practice or competition immediately

 For sports that do not have mandatory protective equipment, reduce time of outside activity and

consider postponing practice to later in the day.

 Re-check temperature and humidity every 30 minutes to monitor for changes in Heat Index.

From 100 degrees upward if extra protective equipment is required then activity has to be suspended, if it can be removed then play can continue so if they opt to play 7 on 7 without helmets they could.

At 104.1 all activity has to stop.

They probably need to update the KHSAA website since I copied and pasted from there, lol

At 100 degrees on the index, helmets have to be removed and you can't do 7v7 without helmets for insurance purposes...so I would say play will be suspended if index hits 100. This may not finish up until 10 or so that evening if temps don't permit it. Just part of KY life...lol.
