June 27, 201511 yr i have absolutely no problem with a legal aged man taking up with a man, nor a legal aged woman taking up with a woman, if that be their preference. It's obviously been going on for some time now. But MARRIAGE????? Why does it have to go so far as need to result in a marriage. To my thinking marriage is a union between a man and a woman to sort of pin responsibility on the two for what is probably going to be the result of the union. To me this is simply another extension of political correctness, where everybody is right, and no one should get their feelings hurt. When will there be an end to the insanity???

It's not just about feelings. Most of these relationships are long term, monogamous, loving situations. These couples haven't had the rights regarding end of life, financial, property and legal matters that married heterosexual couples have despite having the same type of relationship. Why should they not have access those same rights if they are in the same type of relationship?? This has nothing to do with political correctness...it's only about fairness and equity.
June 27, 201511 yr Same sexed couples aren't getting married in a church so why does it affect you? What happened to separation of church and state? None of this affects anyone except the people getting married. I will have a problem if the Roman Catholic Church does ever have same sex marriage ceremonies (I'd bet the house money it doesn't). The bible shouldn't rule our laws though. I believe people deserve to be happy. If they are happy being married to the same sex good for them.
June 27, 201511 yr As long as the a church isn't forced I have no issue. I do think it will be the next mission of some on the left to do so. But that is an issue for another day. I don't consider this a great day or bad day because it doesn't affect me. There are much bigger problems in this country to deal with. It shows how social issues are such political softballs just h6 the comments in this topic.
June 27, 201511 yr Ahhh...the first story in the bible. Where two people who lived nearly 1000 years were responsible for populating the entire world. Which implies that incest was ok. Thank goodness they were only guilty of incest and not being homosexual. A perfect example of the intolerance of some. This comes from the Dad of a gay daughter. Thankfully she has more tolerance and understanding of those with differing ideals.
June 27, 201511 yr I A perfect example of the intolerance of some. This comes from the Dad of a gay daughter. Thankfully she has more tolerance and understanding of those with differing ideals. The point was that many use the Bible as a reason to not support this issue. That's fine. However, the Bible is full of stuff that we don't choose to follow so literally. Like so many other things, there is a lot of confirmation bias that occurs when using the Bible in that way. And confirmation bias is something we are all guilty at some point time. We lock on to those things that support our beliefs while ignoring the evidence that doesn't. It's not intolerance...you are free to believe whatever you want. I just happen to not interpret the Bible so literally. Doesn't make me any better or any worse than someone who does.

It comes across as belittling and intolerant.

For me, this is the main reason why I support gay marriage.
June 27, 201511 yr Then you need to work on your delivery. It comes across as belittling and intolerant. I think we are all a little guilty of bad delivery sometimes. I'm far from perfect, and if I screw up I don't mind being called out on it.

June 27, 201511 yr Like what? What do we choose to not follow so literally? Seriously? I haven't seen anyone stoned to death in at least a couple of weeks. Oh darn... mexitucky beat me to the punch. :lol2:

I don't consider this a great day or bad day because it doesn't affect me. There are much bigger problems in this country to deal with. It shows how social issues are such political softballs just h6 the comments in this topic. I think this post sums up what many Americans think, me included. I could not care less that gays can marry now. I just don't want the left (and not just the gay left but the straight left) to start attacking churches now and say they have to be OK with gay marriage...and I am afraid they will. The gay marriage movement has moved with incredible speed. To think that ten years ago Obama and Hillary were against it...now if you are, many (not all) on the left consider you to be a bigoted homophobe who needs to be punished. I am for gay marriage but understand why many may not be.
June 27, 201511 yr Haven't stoned anyone lately. I am kidding. Kidding, but it's part of the point. Like here's a quote from Leviticus: "When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the Lord your God." So if we were to follow every aspect of the Bible literally, I would think this quote should persuade us to be more accepting of immigrants, legal or illegal. But many of those who would use the Bible to rally against gay marriage, ignore the above scripture and call for the removal and unequal treatment of illegal aliens. Just an example. I'll admit, I'm not a Bible scholar. But I know enough about it to know that there are many instances like the above, where people pick and choose their Biblical to fit their needs.
June 27, 201511 yr But I know enough about it to know that there are many instances like the above, where people pick and choose their Biblical to fit their needs. And that happens both inside and outside the circle of Christianity. I have a lot of Christian friends who are up in arms about yesterday's decision, and they're quoting all the Biblical passages that condemn homosexuality. They seem to ignore other passages that condemn several types of heterosexual sexual sin ("no-fault" divorce, which is referenced in this thread, for example). On the other hand, a rallying cry for many in the pro-gay marriage community is that Jesus never specifically addressed homosexuality. They ignore, however, that Jesus did address marriage, and how he upheld the Genesis ideal of a man and a woman, who leave their parents, they're united in marriage, & then become one flesh. My strong opposition to yesterday's decision is based on my belief that God is the author of marriage. I don't believe we have the right to alter it. At the very least, I think it should be a states rights issue.
