I have a lot of Christian friends who are up in arms about yesterday's decision, and they're quoting all the Biblical passages that condemn homosexuality. They seem to ignore other passages that condemn several types of heterosexual sexual sin ("no-fault" divorce, which is referenced in this thread, for example). On the other hand, a rallying cry for many in the pro-gay marriage community is that Jesus never specifically addressed homosexuality. They ignore, however, that Jesus did address marriage, and how he upheld the Genesis ideal of a man and a woman, who leave their parents, they're united in marriage, & then become one flesh. My strong opposition to yesterday's decision is based on my belief that God is the author of marriage. I don't believe we have the right to alter it. At the very least, I think it should be a states rights issue. Thank you Randy Parker. I've been waiting for input.

And there is no appealing that verdict. Ok, I get that in the religious sense. But does the Church recognize a marriage performed outside of the church?? Say by a JOTP?? What about a marriage performed in a non Christian Church?? And does the legal recognition change anything about what a specific Church believes, or teaches?? One thing to keep in mind, is that not everyone is Christian, and nor does this country require everyone to be Christian. And as I've said before, whatever religion you are or choose to follow, is largely based on where you were born and who your parents are (and where they may have been born). In a country that allows freedom of religion, we cannot base all of our laws on the teachings of just one religion (or group or subset of religions). In no way does this mean you cannot have and abide by your beliefs, or make your beliefs right or wrong. All this ruling does is ensure fair treatment on many legal issues for same sex couples. June 27, 201511 yr As long as the a church isn't forced I have no issue. I do think it will be the next mission of some on the left to do so. But that is an issue for another day. I don't consider this a great day or bad day because it doesn't affect me. There are much bigger problems in this country to deal with. It shows how social issues are such political softballs just h6 the comments in this topic. This pretty much my attitude on the issue. From my point of view, the only thing that really changed yesterday was that divorce lawyers got a bump in potential clientele.
June 27, 201511 yr I think this post sums up what many Americans think, me included. I could not care less that gays can marry now. I just don't want the left (and not just the gay left but the straight left) to start attacking churches now and say they have to be OK with gay marriage...and I am afraid they will. The gay marriage movement has moved with incredible speed. To think that ten years ago Obama and Hillary were against it...now if you are, many (not all) on the left consider you to be a bigoted homophobe who needs to be punished. I am for gay marriage but understand why many may not be. Funny you castigate the left but I know many conservatives who feel the same way about gay marriage that you say the left feels.
June 27, 201511 yr I will say the 2nd biggest winner yesterday outside of the LGBT community yesterday was the GOP. The decision is final so it's a non issue in any election. Any democrat who wants to make that a major topic will be looking to the past. Probably a few GOP candidates who celebrated this behind closed doors.

June 27, 201511 yr So I'm going to try and state my belief on this topic as clear as I can and why it's always been a non issue to me. I don't use bible quotes like some of protestant Christian peers because I'm Catholic. When I have moral dilemmas I turn to the Catholic Cathecism for guidance. I'm not good Catholic but I try to be. The Catholic Church does not believe being gay to be a sin. The Catholic Church does view sex out of marriage to be a sin. The Catholic Church also believes marriage to be between a man and a woman. So the actual act of intimate relations is considered a sin. But no worse than the dozens of my straight friends who have sex out of marriage. So how could I being a reasonable person cast stones at my gay friends and not also my straight friends. Not to mention a sin I myself have committed. I see no difference in any scenario I listed and I'm not going to judge people based on sins that do not affect me . That isn't my job . I forget the exact quote but I remember a quote from Jesus telling people to follow the laws of Ceaser on earth and of his Father in heaven. As long as a law doesn't force me or you to commit a sin it shouldn't bother us and we should follow the laws of " Ceaser" here on earth. If it is truly a sin that is on the individual when they meet their maker and Lord knows I'll have my fair share to answer for.

No. I am saying I know conservatives who are for gay marriage and think that those who are against it are "bigoted homophobes who must be punished."
