Once the facts actually come out regarding the events leading up to the incident, what happened during and immediately after, the Admin's investigation, and their final punishment, a lot of minds will change one way or the other. Most are like me and have no clue what happened. How they have formed an opinion one way or the other is beyond me. The story is gross and humiliating, but for us on the outskirts we should wait for facts and processr to play out before being so definitive about lighting our torches and picking up our pitchforks. People in the know at Highlands have every right to view this anyway they want since many have the facts. The rest of us need to slow down until this whole thing is resolved and the picture is clear.

The Solomonic wisdom here is pretty obvious. Let the victim & victim parents decide the punishment for the student athletes. Apologize, appeal to their compassion and live with what they decide.

You have the perfect storm here for something that isn't, in the grand scheme of things, the biggest news happening even in our neighborhood. It is the most gossippy, if that is even a word.

You have 1. athletes, 2. from a well-to-do area, 3. picking on/bullying a teammate, 4. in a completely disgusting manner. People are going to jump on this. In a way, that is good, b/c the punishment ultimately will have to be well thought out. However, in a way, it is depressing. I feel bad for the kid who got messed with. I feel, kind of, bad for the kids involved who this is completely out of character and this is a first time offense. I worry for the kids involved who have just shaken this off (if there are any.)

Once again, the parents cannot and will not know the punishment. They will have to surmise what it was or what they find out from others close to them.

Define a first time offense please.

For a school to determine bullying, it has to meet three criteria:

A. Repeated behaviors (doesn't have to be the same behavior)

B. Happen over a period of time ( period of time is not defined, but but if documented or adressed by a person of authority, then the time period can be very short)

C. Have a demonstration of power over somebody.

 

So, the questions that need answered are:

A. Has there been issues between these athletes before?

B. How long has these behaviors been going on?

C. Did Jeremy know of any issues prior?

 

If this event doesn't fulfill these requirements, it is NOT bullying by school standards. It can be assault or harassment.

 

This will take time to investigate thoroughly.

The key facts that make a really big difference in my mind about the proper punishment is what incidents, if any,

happened prior to this one. If this is a first time incident by the perpetrator, I would be more lenient than most on here seem to be. If it is not a first time incident, I would be in favor of the most severe punishment possible including expulsion from school. First time perp, I will give you another chance.
