October 20, 201411 yr No more than 8 teams. I would even be ok with 6 teams where the top 2 get a first week bye.
October 20, 201411 yr 8 teams is perfect. Not too big. Not too small. Especially in a year like this when it is clear that the number 8 team is good enough to win the title. 16 is too many. You'll never convince me that the #16 team in the nation deserves a chance to be the champion. Last year, after the conference championships had been played, UCF was ranked 15th by the BCS, with an 11-1 record. (The one loss, a 28-25 defeat to South Carolina.) If we assumed they were seeded 15th in a tournament, they'd have had to potentially face Auburn (#2), Ohio State (#7), Alabama (#3), and Florida State (#1) to win the championship. Are you telling me if they went 15-1, with their last four wins against those teams, that they shouldn't have been considered?

I think the argument is that they (UCF and similar teams) would NEVER even come close to dreaming of doing that, much less actually being capable of pulling it off. I agree with that argument.
October 20, 201411 yr I think the argument is that they (UCF and similar teams) would NEVER even come close to dreaming of doing that, much less actually being capable of pulling it off. I agree with that argument. I'm absolutely the other way. I'd have loved to see what UCF was capable of. They were all over Baylor in that Fiesta Bowl. I hate that a schedule that in many cases is fully outside the control of a particular team determines the course of their season. That's just awful. Non-conference games set three years in advance and a league that may be up or down and is completely independent of the team in question. I think UCF definitely could have won a first round game last year in a 16-team tournament depending on the matchup. Think also about the teams that maybe had a player out earlier in the season for a couple games and dropped one. I'd love to see that team get another shot with a healthy squad.
October 20, 201411 yr I would be ok with 6 SEC teams and 2 at large. Going to be interesting how many undefeated teams, if any, are left and how many good 1 loss teams. Or a couple of conference champions with 1 loss get left out.
October 20, 201411 yr http://bluegrasspreps.com/college-football/death-bcs-what-218013.html I first mentioned a possible 16 team scenario based on Dan Wetzel's book "Death to the BCS" back in 2011. I would love to see this play out, eventually, with some tweaks due to the BCS going bye bye. 2011 sixteen team playoff automatic bid (11 automatic bids- ties settled by head to head result, 3 way ties by higher BCS standing) with 5 at-large bids (which I will concede to the top 5 non conference winners in the BCS poll). I decided seeding. South Bracket 1. Auburn (SEC Champ) vs 16. Troy (Sun Belt Champ) 8. Arkansas (SEC at large) vs. 9. Michigan St. (Big 10 at large) Mid West Bracket 4. Wisconsin (Big 10 at Champ) vs 13. UConn (Big East Champ) 5. Stanford (Pac 10 at large) vs 12. Virginia Tech (ACC Champ) West Bracket 2. Oregon (Pac 10 Champ) vs 15. Miami, Oh. (MAC Champ) 7. Oklahoma (Big 12 Champ) vs 10. LSU (SEC at large) East Bracket 3. TCU (MWC Champ) vs 14. Central Florida (Conference USA Champ) 6. Ohio St. (Big 10 at large) vs 11. Boise St. (WAC Champ) South Bracket winner plays Midwest Bracket winner in Final Four. West Bracket winner plays East Bracket winner in Final four. Semi-final winners meet in championship game.
October 20, 201411 yr I like 8 teams with the top 4 rewarded with a first round home game. That helps with Getslow's valid point about fan travel and rewards the top 4 teams while getting more teams in. I think 16 is too many. I was thinking having the major five conference champions plus three wild cards. To get a first round home game, you have to win a conference. Something like that although I have not given it much thought at all.
October 20, 201411 yr Tin is spelled Tin . its a weak metal kinda like the b!G is a weak conference. Legends and Leaders -- LOL Yeah it's also called the east and west conferences now lol. Could you know less about something that you wake up each day to hate lol?
October 20, 201411 yr I'd like to see a setup something like this: 8 teams - five power conference champions get automatic bids, plus three wild cards First Round - on campus (8 @ 1, 7 @ 2, etc.), third weekend in December. That would allow two weeks between conference championship games and the first round. On campus would be a huge incentive for high seeds (thus eliminating any fear of resting players), plus the crowds would be huge because it would require no travel. Semifinals - bowl sites, January 1. That gives anywhere from 11-16 days between games, depending on the calendar. A committee could determine locations that would benefit travel, and since it is holiday time traveling would be normal and not require too many people to take off too much time from work. Championship - second Monday in January. That would be anywhere from January 8-14. This would be at a predetermined neutral site (like they are already doing).
October 20, 201411 yr I don't know if 4 or more than 4 or less than 4 is the right number until I see what happens this season. If there are 2 undefeated teams and 8 one loss teams then I think 2 is the right number. If there are 0 undefeated teams and 4 ones loss teams then I think 4 is the right number. If there are 0 undefeated teams and 10 one less teams then I think 10 is the right number. I reserve any judgment until this "Committee" comes up with the 4 teams.
October 20, 201411 yr http://luegrasspreps.com/college-football/death-bcs-what-228021.html The second thread I made on this topic in December if 2011. Every year, the BCS does this to us. They make us disparage one team in the name of another or have a hypothetical posed that does not need to be thought of. I started a thread back during the NCAA basketball tourney that I am rehashing it. Dan Wetzel, Josh Peter and Jeff Passan co-wrote Death to the BCS. It is a great book outlining why we can and should have a college football playoff. It is a great read with too many details to get into here, but they put together a model for a playoff system for football. This year's controversy has caused me to bring this thread back, so to speak. If it happened, here is what it would look like. 16 team playoff- bowl championship division conference champs get an automatic bid (11 automatic bids- ties settled by head to head result, 3 way ties by higher BCS standing) with 5 at-large bids (which I will concede to the top 5 non conference winners in the BCS poll). I decided seeding. Gator Bowl Bracket 1. LSU (SEC Champ) vs 16. Arkansas St. (Sun Belt Champ) 8. Boise St. (MWC at large) vs. 9. Kansas St. (Big 12 at large) Fiesta Bowl Bracket 4. Oregon (Pac 12 Champ) vs 13. Southern Miss (Conference USA Champ) 5. Stanford (Pac 12 at large ) vs 12. West Virginia (Big East Champ) Outback Bowl Bracket 2. Alabama (SEC at large) vs 15. Louisiana Tech (WAC Champ) 7. Arkansas (SEC at large) vs 10. TCU (Mountain West Champ) Cotton Bowl Bracket 3. Oklahoma St. (Big 12 Champ) vs 14. Northern Illinois (MAC Champ) 6. Wisconsin (Big 10 Champ) vs 11. Clemson (ACC Champ) Gator Bowl Bracket winner plays Fiesta Bowl Bracket winner in Final Four in the Orange Bowl. Outback Bowl Bracket winner plays Cotton Bowl Bracket winner in Final Four in the Rose Bowl. Semi-final winners meet in championship game in the Sugar Bowl. Higher seeds get home game for the first round (so, the regular season means a lot!). Final Four played in the BCS Bowl Game stadiums and the championships rotates just as it does now and would be in New Orleans this year.
October 21, 201411 yr I'm not a fan of automatic qualifiers unless it's expanded to at least 16 teams. Rewarding some of these conference champs at the expense of say Auburn would not be right. I'm still a BCS guy but cool with the +1.
October 21, 201411 yr No, I think that four is enough. No matter how many is put someone will be complaining why they weren't in.
October 21, 201411 yr 4 is good for now, wouldn't care if it goes to 8. You'll always have the 1st 1 or 2 teams left out complain--doesn't matter if it's 4, 8, 12 or 16 (see March Madness). In about 10 years it will go to 8, I think that is going to happen eventually. Then, maybe, in another 10 years, go to 16. Too much money to be made to not expand (see March Madness). As far as the fans not traveling 3 or 4 weekends in a row, the teams in the FCS do it (and....see March Madness). If you ever go to 16, do away with the conference championship games.
