A 16 team playoff grabs me. It would put my interest in college football at an all time high.

 

Anyone else? Or do you think 4 is right? 8? Any speculation on how big the controversy for the final four will be this year?

I have always liked the idea of 16 teams....no doubt you get the best teams as well as teams that have played well in weaker conferences that deserve the opportunity to show it on the field. Hopefully it will evolve over time to 8 then to 16 and stop there.

I favor a 8 team system. At that point, you mostly get it right I would think.

 

A 16 team playoff is intriguing, but not if you give auto bids to all conferences. Pick the best 16 teams, and if five of them are from the SEC, watch it play out.

I think 8 teams would be perfect. 16 is way too many, and with only 4, you will almost always have a team that has a legitimate shot at winning a title left out. I don't think that would be the case with 8 teams...

If I were king it would be a simple 16 team tournament.

 

Automatic bids to the 10 conference champions and 6 at large bids. No muss, no fuss, except for the at large bids. At large bids are the six highest ranked teams by the AP, not already in the tournament.

 

Seat by draw, not perception of strength. No committee.

 

Select the 15 most popular bowls to host the games.

Love the idea of having this if there is a 16-team tournament. Absolutely LOVE IT.

It is not good practive to compare it to NCAA basketball and fans traveling to neutral site games. I have been to a host of NCAA tournament games and they are often played in half filled arenas. Heck, the Final Four I went to in Houston I bet UConn did not have but 3,000 fans. People will find a way to travel, but beyond 4 teams the games have to be played at home stadiums.

FCS team's fans travel for a 16 game playoff and major conference fans DO travel 3 or 4 weeks in a row to conference championship games and NCAA tournament games. I've been to many of those 1st and 2nd rounds game. The only ones that are poorly attended are the 1st session because it's a 12:00 start on a weekday. At ALL of those games, the major conference teams that play there have a designated section and it is filled.

 

Really none of that matters. You will have football powers that DO travel well. The majority of the crowd in major bowl games are local fans anyway. I doubt any of the bowl games outside of the BCS bowls sellout now. They're not canceling them, they adding more every year.

 

If it ever got to 16, I think they would have a home game to start anyway. At 8, they could definitely get big crowds to 7 games anywhere, anytime.

I didn't read the thread but my response is patience. Once the conferences see the money generated from the playoff they will add games to make more money.
