February 12, 201412 yr One mock draft I saw last night has Sam going to San Diego in 4th or 5th round because of need and the fact that San Diego did OK drafting Manti Teo last year. Makes sense to me.
February 12, 201412 yr The only people making this news is the media/news people. I'd say 95+% of people don't really care what gender the kids chooses to be romantically involved with. Now, a LOT of those people, me included, may not agree with that "lifestyle"...but it doesn't affect or bother most people in the least. The thing that DOES bother a lot of people, me included, is the medias continued focus and attention on the subject to the point that it becomes irritating, thus itself becoming the news story, not the fact that a guy who plays football is gay. Now, will there be some possible teammates that might have more of a problem with him? Probably, yes. But that's a them issue and not a Sam issue. And no matter what, there are always going to be knuckleheads out there that have a problem with something. Just look at Incognito this past season with the Dolphins. But this constant attention to this subject...media just give it a rest and move on.
February 12, 201412 yr I guess I am not fully understanding the draft value dropping. That doesn't change any potential distraction with the media circus. If he is drafted in the 5th round as opposed to 3rd, it is not as if less people are going to check-in on Sam? Am I missing something with that? I think the issue is that a certain number of owners/GMs are just not going to want to draft a gay player, for whatever reason, and that just limits the number of teams that he could go to. If he falls to a later round it might reach the point where a GM thinks the value of the pick is worth whatever distractions they anticipate. I'm imagining a team that needs a DE in the middle rounds, but is one of the anonymous teams in the SI article that doesn't think a gay player will work in the NFL. They are going to go a different route. Perhaps there is a team that doesn't anticipate any issue with it, but they don't have a DE on their draft board. If they feel they can get a 2nd round-caliber DE in the 5th round they might decide that they can't pass up that value. At any rate, I don't see any circumstance where this improves his draft stock. Perhaps it won't hurt it as much as people expect, his Missouri teammates knew about it and by all accounts Missouri had a solid season, so it wasn't an issue there.
February 12, 201412 yr Any chance Michael Sam could sue the NFL for discrimination if he is not drafted? Or not drafted "high enough"?
February 12, 201412 yr Ok, I have a problem with this. He tells people at MIZZ he is gay in August but does not tell his parents until it's all over the news. Not only that, he tells his dad in a text message, are you kidding me? Shouldn't he discussed this with his parents before coming out to the public? Michael Sam Sr. told The New York Times that he received the news last Tuesday when his son wrote in a text: "Dad, I'm gay. Father of Michael Sam struggling with news son is gay - ESPN I thought that was odd too, but after reading his dad's response, it made a little more sense.
February 12, 201412 yr Who ever drafts Sam, is also getting a circus with the pick. It's on ESPN every 30 mins., in todays USA newspaper it's on page 1A, 2A, 10A, 1C, 4C, and 5C. The team who does will have distractions. And on the cover of the new SI too.
February 26, 201412 yr Sam had a pretty horrendous Combine....Ran a 40 of 4.91(18th among DL), had 17 reps in the bench (2nd last among DL), 25.5" vertical (39th among DL), and broad jump of 114" (14th among DL).

February 26, 201412 yr Author Several said that he looked tight and like he was pressing, expected better performance on his Pro Day Disappointing for him. Figured he'd be looser and ready to make a splash. Do they get another chance to show skills or is this it?
February 26, 201412 yr Disappointing for him. Figured he'd be looser and ready to make a splash. Do they get another chance to show skills or is this it? At Mizzous pro day he will get a chance to do the combine all over again luckily for him. I'm rooting or the guy
February 26, 201412 yr It wouldnt hurt my feelings if he dont get drafted. Why the need to come out in public, he already did to his team mates at mizzu. What about me, should I be in the news for coming out and saying I love women, I am a guy who loves women. All kinds and colors. Where is my big coming out party. This coming out of the closet stuff is getting old. Must need attention.
