Michael Sam, Missouri Draft Prospect Comes Out

Featured Replies

I have no problem with him being Gay or anything he wants to do with his life. I have to wonder though, why he chose to come out? I'm of the thinking of just live your life. Why the announcement?

Whomever made the point about it would come out at the Combine, so better to be out ahead of it instead of looking like you were trying to keep it secret. My hunch.

Even though he is not that good? Obviously a D-1 player is better than I ever was, but he is not considered by anyone to be an elite defensive player.

Not that good? You are measuring with a heck of a yard stick. Leads the SEC in sacks and TFL...and "not that good".

I think he'll switch to OLB, or play standing up in a 3/4, and will be chosen around the 3rd round. My hunch.

He may be a Steeler.

I agree with you that he will be drafted. But he did switch to OLB at Senior bowl and that's where his stock dropped because he didn't look comfortable.

Smart guy and a talented player, I wonder how much stock they put in his comfort level with it after one week. I think he'll be fine...disruptive kid out there with a high motor.

I Pittsburgh he'd have a minimum of a year to learn it, would get very few snaps barring injury his first season. If he falls, I bet he's someone they'll considering addressing the position with.

I think that is a fair question. My only answer is that is was about to be announced by the media or whomever and he wanted to get ahead of it. I guess the follow-up to that could be, "Ok. So, why did you have to announce it?"

Or maybe, someone very smart that around him figures it would help his draft stock. The NFL doesn't want to be known as Anti-Gay. The thing that would paint this picture would be if he's drafted lower than expected or not drafted at all.

@darrenrovell: The guys @sportsbook_com have odds of @MikeSamFootball getting drafted in the first round at 100/1 longshot, not drafted is 3/2 favorite.

I hope I am wrong on this thing, but I have a bad feeling. I am happy that so many in the know and so many on this site think that he will be drafted.

I hope that GM's and owners only look at the film and make their decision. I will say that, in the last 24 hours since this has come out, I have heard some sentiment as to why Sam was a marginal draft pick anyway. Tweener, got most of his sacks in a 3 game span, had 9.5 career sacks before this season, not a speed rusher for his size, struggled in Senior Bowl playing OLB- I feel like the road is being paved for front offices to say "Hey, this guy can't play and that is why we didn't take him".

Imagine a reality where the SEC Defensive Player of the year doesn't get drafted?

The GM's need to concentrate on "play" not "gay."

For perspective Souts Inc. has him ranked as the #15 DE. So not as if he is some kind of can't miss phenom. Say we didn't know about his sexuality and he was not drafted, it would not raise any eyebrows.

Maybe so, but he was the SEC DPOY. I'm sorry, but if you're good enough to win that award, you're good enough to be in the NFL. Cannot convince me otherwise.

To provide some context however, last year 30 DE were drafted as were 24 the year before. Based on that ranking of #15 DE I would expect that he would figure to be drafted.

I agree. But this story is going to be picked up by a lot of outlets that have no clue about draft rankings or his projected place in the draft. They see gay, defensive POY in the SEC, and will start questioning teams if he is not one of the Thursday night selections. And that is at #15 right now. A lot of time for him to move up or down a few slots.

I guess my point is, if he's not drafted, there will be a lot of chatter that it's because he's openly gay. Based on his abilities, and projections at this point, I think that contention would have quite a bit of merit if it were to play out that way.
