Tell that to Jake Burger who hit the buzzer beater.

I agree! I was referencing the nay Sayers in the NCC thread about hoopsters playing football.

One would think Hunt or Feldman would appear to have a good chance at this job. I'm with Clyde, a young and energetic coach would do well in Ft. Thomas. Someone who could care less that football is king, but will coach who shows up and will coach them hard.

Coaching "who shows up" will not be enough. Need someone who will "recruit" within the student body to make sure all those that are capable and might be interested in playing basketball are encouraged, allowed and excited to do so. THEN coach all those guys hard and energetically.

Agreed! To take it one step further be in the building, actually know the students and know what is in the pipeline. It is never a good thing when a boy has had more conversations with other high school coaches than the one school he plans on attending. Trust me it doesn't happen in baseball and football. An active website and info about games and the program would be nice. If it wasn't for football and the education factor, I would imagine our school choice might be different. My vote goes to a coach that is enthusiastic and gets the kids excited about basketball. Currently, the basketball program lacks being fun.

I want to thank Coach Flynn for his years of service to the school and the kids. Mike is one heck of a fine person. When he got hired, he went out of his way to come up and introduce himself to me. Every time I saw him, he was nothing but nice to me. Just a class act all the way around. I know some negatively commented on here about his coaching style, but I have no idea if those comments had any merit. I know as much about basketball as Qryche does about football. :isurrender:

Hope MIke has a long and enjoyable retirement down in South Carolina. Any one know what part of the Palmetto State he's moving to?

Very close to Pickens S.C. That's the same town that Sam Wyche is Off Coordinator of the Pickens Blue Flame high school football team. Flynn is building a house the next town over and it's about 20 miles due North of Clemson University. Flynn will be a relatively close neighbor of our Summer home there. Very small world!

I too received a text just minutes after the meeting yesterday from one of the asst coaches and I was a little surprised as well. I thought he would of stuck it out for at least one more year as planned. Good luck to coach Flynn.

I do not understand all the love for Listerman. He was a teacher/coach at HHS during my days there and there was no love for him by the students. And as far as a teacher he was terrible and did not care one bit about teaching kids (more concerned about running his landscape bussiness during class than teaching). IMO he would be a very bad pick for Highlands.

IF this was the case...we all change as we get older.........................

Would like to think that is the case, but I have friends and co-workers who had kids at Cov Cath while he was there and I heard the same thing from them; Kids do not like him and he is a terrible teacher. Same old same old, some things never change! He might know how to coach basketball, but that does not make him a good pick.

He has an All A State Championship on his resume as well.

Those apparently dont count.:)

No, he called it the All A State Championship so he's good. :D

Has Josh Feldman stepped down at Brossart yet? Still saying he is the frontrunner for this position unless the powers that be can somehow convince Mike Code to take the position and Mrs. Burns make the decision for her son to attend the public school at which she is a teacher. They may even have Dave Trentman be the new voice of the basketball Bluebirds and he would bring his son to the program as well. Wouldn't these moves really turn the basketball landscape upside down?

Ok guys I'll bite. I know both of you well and hope you are not implying Mike didn't encourage or allow kids to play. I hope the implication isn't that Mike drove kids away from the program - that is simply not true.

Point #1 - getting someone in the building. Agreed, I think this is always a preference. Para-professionals, or coaches working at other schools can work in some situations, but having a teacher/administrator in the building would help. Maybe this will happen. Teaching positions don't open up much at Highlands. Jobs are occupied by plenty of coaching types. Mike Code is a health/PE teacher and coaches at Brossart. Willie Schlarman is a math teacher and is currently not coaching. Makes the hire a bit tougher.

Point #2 - The premise that playing basketball at HHS is not fun is 100% related to winning. Winning is fun. Being beat by 40 by your rival school is not fun. Having CovCath come to your gym and dominate your team is not fun. High school sports require hard work and dedication, the reward is winning. When you struggle to succeed it becomes more like a job. I'm sure the football team has fun. They win. Not fun for CovCath to lose to HHS in football every year. Not fun for Holmes to try and compete with HHS every year in football.

Finally, please put to rest the whole idea about "recruiting" the student body. The boys that are capable and WANT to play basketball are playing.

The bolded part might be the best of a very good post.

And I thought hiring Ruthsatz and bringing his son was the answer.

Code + Trentman + Burns = instant 9th contender.

N KY basketball talk has morphed into NBA free agency

Those apparently dont count.:)

Now that's funny.

Hope they are under cap space then.
