Mike Flynn Resigns From Highlands

Featured Replies

Coaching "who shows up" will not be enough. Need someone who will "recruit" within the student body to make sure all those that are capable and might be interested in playing basketball are encouraged, allowed and excited to do so. THEN coach all those guys hard and energetically.

So many jokes, so much opportunity to get suspended.

But might not be up to date on the present who's who, and the best fit for the program.

Says the guy who wants Listerman as a coach?! He's from the old realm as well.

Ok guys I'll bite. I know both of you well and hope you are not implying Mike didn't encourage or allow kids to play. I hope the implication isn't that Mike drove kids away from the program - that is simply not true.

Point #1 - getting someone in the building. Agreed, I think this is always a preference. Para-professionals, or coaches working at other schools can work in some situations, but having a teacher/administrator in the building would help. Maybe this will happen. Teaching positions don't open up much at Highlands. Jobs are occupied by plenty of coaching types. Mike Code is a health/PE teacher and coaches at Brossart. Willie Schlarman is a math teacher and is currently not coaching. Makes the hire a bit tougher.

Point #2 - The premise that playing basketball at HHS is not fun is 100% related to winning. Winning is fun. Being beat by 40 by your rival school is not fun. Having CovCath come to your gym and dominate your team is not fun. High school sports require hard work and dedication, the reward is winning. When you struggle to succeed it becomes more like a job. I'm sure the football team has fun. They win. Not fun for CovCath to lose to HHS in football every year. Not fun for Holmes to try and compete with HHS every year in football.

Finally, please put to rest the whole idea about "recruiting" the student body. The boys that are capable and WANT to play basketball are playing.

Personally it would not be fair for me to evaluate Mike, he seemed to be a nice enough guy! I did not care for his offensive sets but for sure he gave kids opportunities. Last year he did not have the horses! No fault of the kids as they played hard. I wish him well in his retirement!

I agree with both of your points and point 2 is spot on! My Son's response after the second of those blowout losses "More of the Same"! I still think a stronger effort must be made by the coaching staff to attract basketball players at all levels. For example, when he found out Flynn retired he asked me about his replacement. I told him I thought Josh Feldman might be the front runner. He knew all the names except Steve Hunt which surprised me? He new 3 outside candidates but not the JV coach of our current program. That speaks volumes...

I have heard the same. Thought my source was pretty good. I did not see anything inappropriate about what was posted. 2 very good athletes.

I grew up with mayes father he a mayes. Bolden's dad is a bolden from covington. There not related! FACT!

At least not brother an sister!

Would like to think that is the case, but I have friends and co-workers who had kids at Cov Cath while he was there and I heard the same thing from them; Kids do not like him and he is a terrible teacher. Same old same old, some things never change! He might know how to coach basketball, but that does not make him a good pick.

Maybe one of your friends or co-workers should have written a letter about him?

I only know coach Listerman from a distance. Every interaction I have ever had with him, he has shown me nothing but class. Once again, not involved with the program, was never in a practice or classroom of his, but thought he did a good job. I'm thinking coach Booher appreciated his help in getting the Bulldogs down state this year in the real state tourney?

They went to the AD as many other parents did and I am sure it was at least part of the reason he was pushed out at CCH. Their was a reason he left CCH!

I do not understand all the love for Listerman. He was a teacher/coach at HHS during my days there and there was no love for him by the students. And as far as a teacher he was terrible and did not care one bit about teaching kids (more concerned about running his landscape bussiness during class than teaching). IMO he would be a very bad pick for Highlands.

Has Hell frozen over.

I agree with a bluebird

Has Feldman stepped down at Brossart yet or is Code taking the job? Hear they may give Joe Weyer the job of keeping the clock and thus Ben will be returning to Highlands. So now we have a frontline of Burns, Trentman and Weyer for next year.

If you "recruit" from within the student body, what do you owe them! Kids who want to play will play! Coach those who have the guts to practice and show up. Let the others play rec league somewhere and tell everyone how good they

are.

Well said!

I totally agree and I don't have to worry about that! It would be nice if a coach now and then would show up shake a kids hand and say I can't wait to get you in the program. It is the little stuff!!!

Good luck to a very nice man. Despite the difficulties he had at HHS, he always won and lost with class.

I think the entire program from top to bottom needs to develop some nastiness and toughness. I get tired of watching kids from middle to High School play soft and not get after it physically. Whoever takes the job I certainly hope they demand the kids play a tougher brand of basketball throughout the entire program.

I looked at the end of the year Varsity stats and several kids played 25+ games and had 50 or less fouls. I watched a group of very skilled 6th graders play about as soft defensively as I have ever seen. 8 of those 6th graders now play AAU together and the carryover is ridiculously frustrating. Its like we have to re-teach them how to play defense and beg them to actually agitate the offensive player.
