Mike Flynn Resigns From Highlands

What I don't understand about the program is that Ft. Thomas always seems to have solid youth and middle school programs. I realize this isn't always a great indicator of success but... where do some of those kids go?

Define solid and what time frame are you talking about and maybe some of your questions could be answered.

I would love to know who you are talking about. I know just about every athlete in the school, especially who the kids are that can play hoops. Please share this with us.

Here is a list of kids I thought could have helped the program if they would have committed themselves to getting better at the sport in the offseason. I am not saying they would have just stepped in and made the team better but they had potential to help the program.

Hoge, Urlage, Hope, Collinsworth, Christian

Cole Davis-Roberts left after frosh bball. Big, athletic, left-handed, and although still figuing the the game out a little, he would have fit as a big forward or possible 5 off the bench. A role like that is easier to groom with a kid with less ball history than a guard . He went to Creen's first camp at IU with my boy a couple summers ago. The other loss was Alex Shephard (sp?). Build similar to Parker Harris. I thought he showed a lot of potential and improvement last year. He was more of a 2 growing into a 3 or 4 last year. Pretty shot, and calm nerves.

And I agree a program wants, and needs commitment from the kids. I know they both love soccer, but I also know they liked bball as well. And neither of the families are the types to micromanage coaches, or probably even read BGP.

Right or wrong, in the Birds environment the standard set by football, (and soccer I believe -- not much knowledge there), is competiitiveness AND fun. Dale is a master motivator, and because he is so darn happy, it sets a tone for asst coaches and players. I don't agree that all the enjoyment of the sport comes solely from winning. Kinda like money and happiness I suppose. It definitely helps. Drill sergeant technique will be a difficult sell in HHS bball. Toughness can still result without that. No one ever claims Birds footballers aren't knocking heads.

We will agree to disagree on these 2. Again there were very few kids in the hallway that would have made the Birds better this year than they were. Not real sure where the drill sergeant comment comes from either or that it would be a tough sell. Some kids need to have a coach climb in their grill from time to time to get them to perform and others need to be coddled like a baby because that is there personality.

Has Josh Feldman resigned at Brossart yet?

Was he interested in the job four years ago? Has he done enough since then to warrant such a position.

Bet a nickel Beau Menefee applies for the job.

What I'm basically saying is is that those names that were thrown out of kids who coulda helped I remember them all playing and contributing as young'ns. Why did they stop?

I'm starting to feel like any aspiring head coach worth his salt is applying to each of these open positions.... A lot of the same names being thrown around.

Was he interested in the job four years ago? Has he done enough since then to warrant such a position.

Yes to your first question. Not sure about number 2.

The eighth grade teams had a good run in the mid 2000s. I'm not sure but maybe 1 state championship, and I know one state finalist. I think the team with Stephen Kwolonek also did well. not sure about after that though.

We may find out if they decide to come back out next year. Kids make choices and they all made the decision to not play.

Not sure to your first question. And to your second question, he has done enough not to want to take a step backwards into the Highlands position.

The job is not even posted on the school webpage and I highly doubt there is any urgency since spring football is in full swing. Would expect a new coach to be in place in early April at the latest.

Where are FTTS and IMSAYS to chime in on this thread?

I was hibernating until football season JOAT, however I will throw my 2 cents in anyways. Like I've said all along I am hoping for a younger coach, that played at Highlands and/or has some vested interest in the community, keep in mind I don’t have a “dog in the race” so it’s really not that big of a deal to me other than for my enjoyment of watching good/competitive/entertaining High School basketball close to home. With that said, I’m not sure if Steve Hunt is that guy, however he very well could be and I would be happy for him if he was. I personally have witnessed Jim Hicks conduct summer open gyms @ Bellevue and I like his style, however I'm not sure if he would be an option given his lack of Varsity coaching experience. My ideal guy would be a Stephen Kowolonek (aged 7-10 years) from watching him conduct some open gyms @ the Armory over the summer I feel like he might have a coaching gig somewhere in his future. I personally feel a guy like that would be able to pull the couple of football only guys people talk about every year off that fence. Obviously that’s not an option at this time and I am sorry I cannot add more to this thread as I don’t know the Code’s, Listerman’s and Goetz’s, etc… Good Luck to whoever is chosen.

Should we be looking for white or blue smoke coming from the cafeteria anytime soon?

1. Yes 2. I would bet he is interested and going backwards would be leaving to coach that Brossart tag football program.

The ball is rolling at Highlands and all involved are working hard to pick the next head coach.

Just to reply to a couple of earlier posts:

I think TAC knows the boys job is not a step backwards, but thx for the dig.

The MS 8th boys own 2 KBA State Titles in the 2000's and at least one of those was in the "open" division that included AAU & school teams. Feldman coached one & I wanna say Kevin Bundy coached the other, Although it could've been Matt Stephens. It hurts my brain to think back that far.

There have been several names mentioned on here and these guys must actually apply to get the job.

I fully believe Highlands has some good players ready to go & the future looks bright as there are several bright spots in the MS program. When a couple of these classes get to run together it will be fun to watch!
