A little closer to the correct answer. They all attended grade school outside the city schools, several were multi-sport athletes and most importantly they were a part of several regional championship basketball teams while the football team was also winning state championships. It can be done.

Also curious where your comments were all year while Highlands was struggling, I would have loved to have heard from someone so close to the coaching staff what was going on with that offense.

 

Steve was an assist at Lloyd for a few years before Flynn brought him in when he got the job at Highlands. He was the assistant for coach Higgins and Lucy Cecil when they were head coaches for the girls team at HHS. they went to state a couple times.

Coach Hunt and Flynn bumped heads this year. I think Steve just became so frustrated on what was going on with the team and his voice didn't have much of a say that he was in a weird position. I don't know the full details but I'm probably right. HHS suffered a lot of injuries this year, I especially losing a double digit scorer in Hergott. They never had a true point guard which hurt them. U can't consistently pick up your dribble as soon as u cross half court. They just weren't that good this year. In fact, that was the worst Highlands team I've ever seen. They turned around down the stretch and gave NCC a run for their money. Again the point guard position hurt them. Their point guard should have played the 3, but they didn't have anyone that could bring the ball up the court. Gain I just hope they give Steve a shot. He deserves it and the players really like him. I think he is the front runner for the job, but I'm not 100 percent.

Worst ever? You have not been around long then have you. Who was to blame for this team being so bad as you proclaim? So Witte should have been a 3? Where would Turner and Houliston have played then? If there were no point guards this past year then where are they going to come from next year?

Well as Steve Hunt's campaign manager I would probably say it isn't a good idea to call a team where he was an assistant as the "worst you have ever seen" and I know for a fact any player on the team would not appreciate those comments. I am not for or against Steve Hunt for the Varsity job, however I can't remember the last time an assistant from a "worst team anybody ever saw" was promoted to Head Coach the following year, also can't remember the last time a coach was given a Varsity job without ever being a head coach on any level. Maybe Steve could put his time in coaching the Freshman or JV team for a couple of years. Another question, does Steve work @ the school in any capacity? Do you think he would be able to convince those football only guys they should man up and play some bball? IMO that would be a deciding factor in choosing the next head coach, just would, especially @ Highlands where sometimes these kids get in their heads that they're worn out after 15 games and need the "time off"

I appreciate your loyalty to Steve but you are clueless.

 

The offense was designed to pick your dribble up and pass, then go stand on the other side of the court and watch. If you attended enough games you would know that. Here is my question regarding the PG position at Highlands the past 3 years. Where were the Assistant coaches in the off-season when these kids could have used some development? You can't put a natural 2G (Hinkle) at the PG spot just because of his size. You can't tell a SR leader that you plan to move him to the PG spot at the end of his JR yr and then never work with him in the off-season or pre-season on the position. No, they just threw him out there the last 12 games after the light bulb finally went off that he was their strongest kid on the floor. The last time he played the PG position was 5th grade. Buten should have been given the shot and it should have started last summer. He may have been undersized but he is quick, great handle and makes things happen. That is what you want from a PG, stir up the dust and distribute to scorers like Houliston, Turner and Witte. Those guys had strengths as far as where they scores the best. When the keys to the car are given to a drunk driver, sometimes you never get out of the parking lot.

 

As far as Hergott being a double digit scorer, well I guess we will never know. He could definitely shoot and wasn't afraid to put it up. He would have helped off the bench, I hope he recovers fully and has a great SR yr.

How many of the returning HHS players for next year are hitting the AAU circuit that starts soon?

I was not aware that there was a basketball offseason at Highlands that could be utilized for player development.

 

Well, the player they told was going to be the PG is strictly hoops and had ZERO conflicts the entire offseason.

I have no clue. Hergott is recovering from ACL, Buten recovering from Torn Labrum. Nick True is playing Spring Football along with Green, Houliston, Brockett, Weyer ?, Daugherty ?. Not sure if last 2 are playing baseball or not.

 

I think Todd Ramey is also recovering from a dislocated shoulder that happened in the 3rd to last game. He played some AAU ball last year and would definitely benefit from it. He was the only kid on the block in all grade levels that had any kind of footwork. Big strong kid who used his body very well and could be a huge lift down low next year opposite Nick True. JMO

 

Jr to be Parker Harris would also benefit from playing AAU. He is 6'3 and has a very good Basketball IQ. Playing a more physical brand of ball would help him out. He is a very good golfer and plays a pretty extensive summer circuit so not sure he would have the time.

Clyde, I think you know the answer to this question. You have followed all the HHS threads the last two years.

 

Q, you say you don't know but painted a pretty clear picture.

 

The only two players that might even be on an AAU team are Buten and Ramey. Both play high school baseball and both recovering from shoulder injuries.

 

Houliston - football, starting QB

True - football, starting TE

Green - football, WR rotation

Brockett - football, WR rotation, academic opportunities

Hergott - football, WR rotation - coming off ACL surgery

Harris - golf, plays the local circuit all summer - one of top players in N KY

Feggins - football, WR rotation

Weyer- football, WR rotation

 

 

Currently at HHS the better question is how many of these boys will take part in the spring and early summer school team workouts. The open gym dates were distributed and the summer scrimmages scheduled.

 

If last year is any indication, True may not participate. Hergott is out with injury. Feggins may be done with bball - just doesn't have the passion for the sport

SBII you obviously are very close to the HHS bball program, any thoughts on who you would like to see take over the ship?
