Mike Flynn Resigns From Highlands

Featured Replies

Steve was an assist at Lloyd for a few years before Flynn brought him in when he got the job at Highlands. He was the assistant for coach Higgins and Lucy Cecil when they were head coaches for the girls team at HHS. they went to state a couple times.

Coach Hunt and Flynn bumped heads this year. I think Steve just became so frustrated on what was going on with the team and his voice didn't have much of a say that he was in a weird position. I don't know the full details but I'm probably right. HHS suffered a lot of injuries this year, I especially losing a double digit scorer in Hergott. They never had a true point guard which hurt them. U can't consistently pick up your dribble as soon as u cross half court. They just weren't that good this year. In fact, that was the worst Highlands team I've ever seen. They turned around down the stretch and gave NCC a run for their money. Again the point guard position hurt them. Their point guard should have played the 3, but they didn't have anyone that could bring the ball up the court. Gain I just hope they give Steve a shot. He deserves it and the players really like him. I think he is the front runner for the job, but I'm not 100 percent.

Undeserved shot.

He is entitled to HIS opinion, whether you like it or not.

I appreciate your loyalty to Steve but you are clueless.

The offense was designed to pick your dribble up and pass, then go stand on the other side of the court and watch. If you attended enough games you would know that. Here is my question regarding the PG position at Highlands the past 3 years. Where were the Assistant coaches in the off-season when these kids could have used some development? You can't put a natural 2G (Hinkle) at the PG spot just because of his size. You can't tell a SR leader that you plan to move him to the PG spot at the end of his JR yr and then never work with him in the off-season or pre-season on the position. No, they just threw him out there the last 12 games after the light bulb finally went off that he was their strongest kid on the floor. The last time he played the PG position was 5th grade. Buten should have been given the shot and it should have started last summer. He may have been undersized but he is quick, great handle and makes things happen. That is what you want from a PG, stir up the dust and distribute to scorers like Houliston, Turner and Witte. Those guys had strengths as far as where they scores the best. When the keys to the car are given to a drunk driver, sometimes you never get out of the parking lot.

As far as Hergott being a double digit scorer, well I guess we will never know. He could definitely shoot and wasn't afraid to put it up. He would have helped off the bench, I hope he recovers fully and has a great SR yr.

Q, thanks for the laughs in this post.

With all the injuries Witte had to play the 3. Did u come to any of the games this year? The reserve team played more organized than the varsity at times. Houliston is a two guard. I'm just saying that Witte isn't a true point guard. I've been around long and understand the game. I can't be as blunt as I want to on here cause I might hurt some people's feelings. When your down 49 to 9 in a high school game and getting beat by teams u have know business losing to, your team is not that good period. Actions speak louder than words. I'm just reiterating the results, I'm not predicting what hasn't been done yet. I watched and it was all bad, period. If Wire can get some weight on him he shows signs, but I'd imagine someone will come up through the ranks. First off, just wanna see who the next coach will be.

Well when I was a player I didn't rely on an assistant coach to help me improve. I attended camps and practiced my butt off in the off season. In fort Thomas we have the armory and several places to practice basketball. I'm accountable for me getting better, just another excuse. If you want to learn how to play the point, it's called practice. I won't say names on here and give my opinion if its negative towards a player.

Well as Steve Hunt's campaign manager I would probably say it isn't a good idea to call a team where he was an assistant as the "worst you have ever seen" and I know for a fact any player on the team would not appreciate those comments. I am not for or against Steve Hunt for the Varsity job, however I can't remember the last time an assistant from a "worst team anybody ever saw" was promoted to Head Coach the following year, also can't remember the last time a coach was given a Varsity job without ever being a head coach on any level. Maybe Steve could put his time in coaching the Freshman or JV team for a couple of years. Another question, does Steve work @ the school in any capacity? Do you think he would be able to convince those football only guys they should man up and play some bball? IMO that would be a deciding factor in choosing the next head coach, just would, especially @ Highlands where sometimes these kids get in their heads that they're worn out after 15 games and need the "time off"

First of all I'm nobody's campaign manager. The team did turn around at the end of the season. The problem with highlands is that the kids can't or don't practice in the off season. I'm sorry they wouldn't like those comments but I firmly believe the truth hurts sometimes. I'm just calling what I saw. I believe he's put his time in for a JV coach on both girls and boys. An assistant coach doesn't call the shots. The head coach does, and if he doesn't perform then the blame goes down the line. I just believes he deserves a shot for the time he already has put in. I will say the turn around that took place after they were crushed by NCC during the season was pretty amazing. I didn't see another game after that until they were beat by NCC in the district. He's a very likeable person and the kids like him. That's a start. I just believes he deserves a chance, that's it.

Clyde, I think you know the answer to this question. You have followed all the HHS threads the last two years.

You give me way too much credit. I didn't watch HHS once this year. I can only name two or three players that will return.

Legit question.

Who are you directing your question to when asking if they came to any of the games this year? Did Witte have to play the 3 because of injuries or the 1 because of injuries. Who did they lose to that they have no business losing too? Wire shows signs of what? Please tell us how it is. You can PM if you like because I would love to hear it.

How many of the returning HHS players for next year are hitting the AAU circuit that starts soon?

Get back to you on that one later in the week. Somethings may be a stirring.

I was speaking in generalities. Threads speaking to the numbers of football players playing hoops. Threads speaking to the lack of basketball only kids in the program.

Really don't need to know the kids by name, just that the returning players do not have the time to dedicate to an AAU type summer team.

HHS did not lose a single game this year to a team that was not better than them. HHS was not a great team, but they did not underperform in the W/L column. They actually overachieved by beating Campbell and Scott.

SBII you obviously are very close to the HHS bball program, any thoughts on who you would like to see take over the ship?

I do not have a name but I would like to see a couple of things in the new head coach. Please remember I am a Mike Flynn supporter, and did not want to see him go.

First, a cohesive coaching staff. There seemed to be a lot of internal turmoil amongst the three coaches. I do not think that TJ, Steve, and Mike respected each other. I would like a head coach that valued his assistants opinion and assistants that felt valued enough to give that opinion.

Second, a coach with a little fire in his belly. Not looking for a stomping, screaming mad man on the sideline, but a coach that lets the officials know he is there. A coach that shows the kids he has their back. If the NKAC gave out a sportsmanship award this year - HHS should have been a lock.

Third, a coach that is able to continue Mike's legacy of having the kids play hard. This years team gave effort. No one could question their desire.

Finally, a coach that has realistic expectations for the program.

The hell you can't, most people on this board know you are not taking "shots" at kids, but stating YOUR honest opinion and/or assessment of the situation. Some folks need to get "thicker skin" when reading some of this stuff.

BTW, try doing it when everybody knows who you are, you want to talk about "catching some crap" from folks. But I'm use to it now. :lol2:

I will agree with you on this point and I will be honest that Witte probably spent more time in the weight room over the summer than working in his game. However, a point guard can go outside in the driveway and work on ballhandling all he wants but if he doesn't understand the position its pointless. My only concern was the misleading of what the staff communicated and the lack of interest in working with the "basketballnly" kids in the off-seaso

You won't hurt my feelings trust me. That NCC game, if that was your only game attending, clearly supports your opinion of it being a bad team. I don't think I have ever seen them lay down like they did. However, I have seen every Highlands game in the last 4 yrs pretty much and I can tell you they certainly don't deserve that moniker.

Unfortunately, there will be better qualified applicants that Steve Hunt will be going up against so he will have to really sell himself if he interviews.

True story lol.

You should see the looks I get around town but I certainly don't hide behind a screen name and I do try and be respectful toward the kids. Nobody should sugar coat anything on here but they do many times. I try to be as honest and respectful as I can on the board. If I have offended someone on here then send me a PM and let's talk about it. Do.t get mad and glare at me up at Mio's or run and gossip to your buddies. You are right LB, say the wrong thing on here and you could be exiled.
