Birds are a work in progress. Overmatched, but still progressing. Last night was a tough result after a breakout game in Corbin against Chesnee SC that opened the eyes of all the boys. If you came away thinking that Ruthsatz coasted either you weren't at the game, or your info is bad. Brockett smothereed him, which is his assignment this year, and held him to only 2 points, 2 assists, and a couple to's while he was d'ing him up. The one fieldgoal came off a solid screen and was the only good look he gave up. This follows up his shutdown of of 39 PPG avg four star recruit from Chesnee. Ruthsatz was shutdown, not coasting. And Weyer combined to d him up the rest of the time and hold him to 10 for the game -- a brightspot for the Birds and a point to build on. Two 3 pointers in 2nd quarter and two freethrows in final minutes (while daddy kept him in against Birds bench) made his 10 points.

The boy just informed me. Congrats Coach Mueller on your well-earned retirement! Thanks for being an excellent Physics teacher to both my boys, and also for that other stuff you've done.

Congrats to the Titans on a well-earned victory -- a game for the ages! My kid commented how, in blocking the exact same kid a year later, how much bigger he’d become…a testament to Collins’ offseason work and dedication. And he even got his State game moment, with the catch that set up what might have been the go-ahead TD. Excellent, and nothing but a privilege that he was able to earn that opportunity. Through family, I also have an inside view of Shelby Co football, and it’s no fluke that the Titans came back competing like they did. I could not be more proud of the HHS program, or the Titans, or more thankful for the four-year experience he and my family enjoyed. I bought a BGP subscription a couple years back in hopes of learning some things about the competition, or to read some interesting stuff in post-game breakdowns. I’ll suffer it through basketball season , but then I’ll be dumping it (no offense Guru, I realize it’s like herding cats trying to control the few tireless imbeciles that spoil some otherwise informative, positive content). I’ll only stoop to counter the haters’ angle of attack this once, because I know that it won’t do a thing to shut the mouths of those shameless antagonist freaks who’ll read it. Unless you have something against hard work, get over your hate for the success of this program and your glee for some kids coming up short on a long-pursued goal. Coming from a transplant that indeed came to the schools for the district’s academics (as most rightfully do), the perception of the administration, or the athletic programs as espoused by the haters is flat-out wrong. My son had a butt-kicking AP Physics test, given by Dale, on Wednesday of State week. The players in his class who might have to stay up late studying? Tough luck. Dale doesn’t let up teaching, regardless of the subject. He’s an incredible coach, and master motivator, but as Jerry Lucas demonstrated, he’s not the only incredible coach or teacher out there. And I’m betting he’ll exploit this last State game as most every good parent in the Fort is doing, as a lesson in humility, and a testament to another team’s hard work. And if and when the student count allows, FTIS will again allow tuition students, first-come, first-serve. We don’t have to recruit, our home-grown talent does just fine, and the academic chops of the school system undermines any that would charge that choosing to come here from out of district was anything but a wise choice. FTIS is a public school system with many of the same challenges and obstacles to academics and athletics as any public school. Not all, but many. If our community sanctioned, or supported an attitude akin to the types I suffer on here, those that just spew and ankle-bite, all the while setting an example to our kids that, in my opinion, is unforgivable, then Highlands wouldn’t be in the position to win anything, much less six straight. Again, congrats to the class program at Collins! Once the Senior-season sting subsides, I’ll be glad that it turned out like it did. What an amazing storyline and fantastic finish.

The booing during the celebration was because of exactly that, and all in good fun. Collins folks understood that there was another game coming and a gatorade slick wouldn't have helped the field conditions. The Meade Co faithful were breathing down their necks waiting for their seats.

Teams only guaranteed 30 minute warmup, and halftime cut to 15 minutes. My frozen bleacher butt likes it.

The only certain Sr receiver you could be referring to has more varsity receptions than anyone save Turner over last season and into this one, dropping precious few and snagging quite a few uncatchable balls along the way. Yet seems like a way was found to call out a specific player afterall (no name or number, but there's only so many plays in a game). I agree with the lesson 100 percent, but aren't you preaching one thing, and doing another? And it wasn't a couple, it was one. JMO

Not a years past expert, but JC was solid last year. Just looked it up. He averaged 30 yards for the year. In particular, I remember him pinning Cov Cath back early in the game a couple times in the playoffs. I bet Dale has something figured out for this year.

RE kicking duties, last year they started out with two kids handling these positions, JC Mettens punting and Luke Brockett as place kicker and kickoffs. Daugherty proved he had a stronger leg for kickoffs and took that duty over a couple games in. Plus, Luke was a receiver as well and what with Highlands offense, he was getting gassed. This year I expect touchbacks to be almost automatic. I hear Brockett is staying on placekicking. No clue who's punting.

The 8K I'm guessing would be the EFC (expected family contribution)....a steal! He would also have the max govt sponsored student loans included in his financial package, which would amount to 25K by graduation or so. IMO, those loans would be easily made up with the employment an Ivy would allow. Considering the Ivy cost (high 50K to lower 60K per year including housing/meals/books), what an opportunity! Plus Dale could write a wicked good recommendation letter, especially to Cornell. Good kid, there.

Since this isn't the New York Times, fact-checking is slightly less important, but per my kid, ESPN contract is a done-deal for University Christian...so says Dale. They're coming on Monday to check out DCMS. They may be nervous.

On top of a the new press box and scoreboard, add in some repairs to the field due to drainage issues...currently working on the southeast corner around the 15 yd line. I wonder what will happen to turf in that corner, just a patch job?

Congrats to Seth! The Ivys' financial aid system can result in grant/scholarship packages (for all students, not just athletes) that can nearly meet a full-ride offer elsewhere, and can be worth much more four years later. The hurdle is just getting in. This says quite a bit about Seth's academic chops. Well earned!

Cole Davis-Roberts left after frosh bball. Big, athletic, left-handed, and although still figuing the the game out a little, he would have fit as a big forward or possible 5 off the bench. A role like that is easier to groom with a kid with less ball history than a guard . He went to Creen's first camp at IU with my boy a couple summers ago. The other loss was Alex Shephard (sp?). Build similar to Parker Harris. I thought he showed a lot of potential and improvement last year. He was more of a 2 growing into a 3 or 4 last year. Pretty shot, and calm nerves. And I agree a program wants, and needs commitment from the kids. I know they both love soccer, but I also know they liked bball as well. And neither of the families are the types to micromanage coaches, or probably even read BGP. Right or wrong, in the Birds environment the standard set by football, (and soccer I believe -- not much knowledge there), is competiitiveness AND fun. Dale is a master motivator, and because he is so darn happy, it sets a tone for asst coaches and players. I don't agree that all the enjoyment of the sport comes solely from winning. Kinda like money and happiness I suppose. It definitely helps. Drill sergeant technique will be a difficult sell in HHS bball. Toughness can still result without that. No one ever claims Birds footballers aren't knocking heads.

Best of luck to Coach Flynn. He was always a class act in a very challenging environment. He didn't just compete for kid committment with football. Bball program has also lost a couple kids to HHS soccer only from the class of 2014 -- could have been 3's or 4's, both over 6'3". Lost one after his freshman year and the other after his 10th grade season. Great bball potential in both of those kids, imo Hunt is very well liked by players. He was very active in the program this last year, and always seemed to be enjoying the endeavor...critical in any turnaround.

Has anyone seen the Lex Cath game time? Traveling this Friday and need to do some long-term planning. FTIS site still has TBA.

If HHS had an advantage to exploit, it was their front court. Points, or at least an early arrival into the bonus could have resulted. Of course, that requires making your free throws. PT, and True needed more touches to counter a back court like CCH. Not sure if offense is up to that style however. Touches that PT got were often passed back out to perimeter. Whenever he was fortunate enough to escape a double team, he should have taken the shot, imho. Fredricks is unreal. Pure shooter.

Also, on pat's, discovered that the state record is 12 in a game. HHS / Brockett had two 11 for 11 games (Holmes and Pendleton County), tying him for second (twice) with seven others.

Extra points total ended up at 104, with 60 for New, and 44 for Brockett (correct stat for Western game was New 7 for 7, Brockett 1 for 1). Thats beats the old state record of 97 (Boyle County, 2000) and ties for second nationally with Charlotte Independence, NC, 2004. And one post for Trub, 2011
