NewCath missed to many 3s. Bolden is a stud. I believe NewCath is second best team in region. When will Grant ever get the Breds to Rupp, how much talent has been on the hill only to lose in the region year after year.

 

Have you been to the past 3 losses? What else can Grant do? He can't make the kids hit open shots. All he can do is try and create open shots through his sets. NewCath, the past three years, has shot terribly in games where they could least afford it. It is part of the game. Once Schulte develops a mid-range game to go with McDonald's, the high-low will be even more effective next year.

Holmes, ranked 11th in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, held on for a 55-50 victory against No. 14 Newport Central Catholic in the 9th Region boys' tournament at Northern Kentucky University on Tuesday night.

Sophomore James Bolden scored 22 points to help the Bulldogs improve to 30-3 this season. Drew McDonald had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Catholic.

Hill came in and gave the Bulldogs a big lift. Played good D, bodied up well. Made a big shot on the block late in the game.

Booher talked about that in the post game interview. Said one of the biggest adjustments they made this game was playing Hill when Chames got in foul trouble instead of freshman Arnold. Hill had arguably his best game to date lat night with 4 pts, 2 rbs. His defensive presence altered a lot of shots though and he played solid D. Hoimes duo down low of him and Chames next year along with Moore as a soph will make Holmes' front line solid. Not as good as Newcath, but right up there.

 

Something that hasn't been mentioned. How big Englemon's 3 charges that he took? 2 of those got Schulte in foul trouble in first half. Watching the replay now and they were both good calls. Englemon slid right in and set up, knowing the spin move that Schulte was about to make. Great preparation by Duke, knowing Schulte's tendencies.

Tough year up on the hill . . when was the last time both NCC's boys' and girls' teams were out this early? When was the last time they were both out before both Brossart teams were out?

 

I only ask because my kids go to St. Joe's and I'm trying to decide where to send them to High School

Great year for NCC............Should be very proud of how they have done the past three seasons and unfortunately for the rest of us will continue to do well with all the returning talent.......................

Agree with everyone about the traffic...it was bad. Real bad.

 

As for the game the first half was pretty sloppy. Both teams were a little careless with the ball. I agree with the others that mentioned that there needs to be a tournament of some sort in the BOK that features teams from the NKY. Saw a lot of shots that were flat, short and just looked like they were aimed at the rim rather than actually shooting a basketball in both games yesterday.

 

The second half got a little better although still sloppy. I thought NewCath needed to get Drew a touch every time down the floor. He had his guy in foul trouble early in the 4th then Holmes subbed out. I think Drew got the ball only twice after that in a position were he could do something with it. I thought Holmes made the adjustments in the second half and NCC kept on doing what they had been.

 

Was shocked that Homes didn't have a rebounding advantage. They had to have a big advantage on the offensive glass. Also was amazed that Holmes only took ten three point attempts, I thought they had a lot more than that.

 

Bolden was impressive. Saw Mick Cronin at the game. Asked him if he got what he wanted to see. And his reply was simply, "Yep".

 

Tonight the better team won. The future is bright for NCC. Just got to keep working. Congrats to NewCath's seniors, great season! Good luck to Holmes the rest of the way. I know this guy will be pulling for the 'Dogs!

Bolden has to have the best crossover in the state. Right before the end of the first half he did a crossover on Devoto, waited, Devoto regrouped and then Bolden crossed him over again and just about had Devoto on the ground. This kid is special and fun to watch.

 

Another way to look at the play... right before the end of the half Bolden makes a great crossover move. Faked out the whole gym including Brennan Devoto. While most of the rest of us were trying to figure out where the ball was Brennan recovered and got a hand up in James' line of sight. James missed the shot. (disclaimer: Brennan's dad is a buddy of mine. ...Bolden is pretty darn good. :notworthy:)

Observations from last night

2 of NKY's best went at it last night.

Bolden is sick quick!

A lot of the missed shots from both teams were near the glass, not a result of the backdrop of the large arena.

MacDonald was gassed last night--he needed a break. Played like a champ, but was not able to run that big floor all night without a break.

Both benches were great last night--early foul trouble for both teams and the benches held their own.

Weyer will be a nice player, I thought he did make a freshman mistake when he came in and immediately shot that 3. that's one where the coach screams NOOOOOO--YES!

Heard a lot of NCC fans thinking Brannen is not a good coach because he can't win a game in the region. I guess the 30 win season is just not enough for them?

Traffic is horrible.

Engleman was beastly on the boards.

Holmes was more patient than I would have ever dreamed. Holding the ball and making NCC come out on them to spread the floor and drive was smart. They forced NCC to play their game. Than in the second half they turned up the speed.

Yes this is a pet peeve of mine....................Announcers please give score of game, especially when going to a time out! Nothing worse than listening for several minutes and having no clue who is winning.
