Holmes 55 Newport Central Catholic 50 9th Region

McDonald for NCC played a great game, Bolden fun to watch for Holmes. I thought Weyer came off the bench and added a big spark for NCC and do not know why the coach took him out and did not put him back in again? I wish HS would put in a shot clock, hate watching Holmes stand and dribble the ball at half court for 3 mins several times tonight! There was some nice talent on NCC's team from Ft Thomas kids, I am sure Highlands would have loved to have that talent on their team!

California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Rhode Island and Washington all have shot clocks in HS. Most use 35 I believe, but Massachusetts uses a 30 second clock. I am also a big advocate of the shot clock at the HS level. Needs to come to the Bluegrass.

Congrats to Holmes and NCC on playing a great game. That's what one would expect with the top two teams in the 9th squaring off. Did the college floor favor either team tonight? I thought it might favor Holmes since they are quicker vs the bigs of NCC. Any thoughts?

I did think it played a small factor in it seemed Holmes was able to penetrate a lot easier this time. They were able to spread NCC out a little more.

Was that the largest crowd to ever see a 9th Regional Tournament game? I have to think so. The officials at the arena thought about 7000

Close, but the 09 region final between Holmes and Boone that had the 10th finals between Mason Co and GRC as the opening act takes the cake.

I believe the official number for that game was around 6800. Tonight? My guess is somewhere around 5500. Still, HUGE crowd. Bottom bowl was basically full and upper level was probably 1/3 full.

Great game by both times. I told Seibert and Beuter I'm going to miss watching them play. Both are great kids both on and off the court.

The game plan tonight was to sag off Schulte with Englemon to keep him out of foul trouble and force him to come in to try and draw a charge...excellent execution of the gameplan by Englemon. Holmes also didn't force shots and didn't gamble on D like they did in the first game. Great team win. The bench really stepped up tonight as well. My guess is we see these two teams in a similar setting next year as well.

I think the biggest factor of the game tonite was MacDonald did not come off the floor all nite.

Someone will correct me if Iam wrong, but because of this he was Gassed in the 4th, hence to ending his scoring frenzy in the first 3 qtrs.

That kid is going to be something really special when it is all said in done, but hey even Lebron needs a breather...

Difference in the game imo, but maybe Brannen knew without MacDonald on the floor spelled zero chance for the Breds...

Someone else commented about both teams playing sloppy, well guess what, really good teams bring the not so good things out when all eyes are watching.

Two great teams and Good Luck to them Dawgs...:thumb:

Which team returns the most next year?

THIS!!! I asked my son this exact question in the 2nd half. He looked really good. Not like a Frosh at all!

Holmes is not exactly a team that holds the ball. NCC just didn't get up in their face that far out until the 4th quarter. If they had, both Palmer and Bolden would have beaten them. It was close and then Holmes had the lead, You gotta come and get them. Ncc caused one wlking call on Bolden with the trap in the 4th, but after that Holmes was able to take advantage with no nCC rebounding once they beat the trap. Why mess up the best HS BB in the country IMO?

Walter, unfortunately I was unable to stop down (obviously) as I arrived late and was sitting in a location where it wasn't easy to get out and down to press row. I'm going to try and make it out to the semis or finals so hopefully I'll be able to stop down then.

As for the game, it seemed Holmes kept leaving the door open by missing the back end of their foul shots but NCC couldn't capitalize. After seeing how McDonald played early on I thought they would keep feeding him the ball. At times I was perplexed with the officiating, as it seemed they would let them play at times and then whistle tacky stuff at others. Either way, it was a good game that unfortunately a good team had to lose. Best of luck to Holmes the rest of the way and congratulations to NCC and their seniors for a terrific season.

Thanks for all the updates statman.

my pleasure, wish I could have been there though

wa wa are you serious!!!!!! NewCath overrated. If Newcath and Holmes played 10 times they would both have won 5. NCC destroyed Holy Cross, beat Holmes and lost to CovCath by 2. Nothing overrated about going 30-3, ashland tournament champions, All A regional Champs, All A state champs and losing to a very good Holmes team in the region. No way on this planet that Cooper would have beaten NCC in the semifinals.

It's ok. Hang in there. The sun will will come up tomorrow.

Key for NC was no points from Drew McDonald in the 4th after he dominated the 3rd qtr. Credit Holmes for some of that.

I take back whatever I said about Drew's post game. He showed me a left hand tonight that I had never seen. If he gets that going you can't stop him in the post.

I told Schulte after the game he can be a dominant 9th region player next year. It's up to him. He has everything you're looking for.

Add in Weyer and no team in the 9th will have a frontcourt to compete with those 3.

At last, Clyde agrees....

Hmm...1-1 against Holmes in 2 tight games, 2-0 against Holy Cross, and 0-1 against CovCath where their backup center hits maybe his only 3 of the year to win. They won the All A tournament and just finished 30-3. If that is overrated, then give me some of that

1-0 vs Cross I believe, they did not meet in the All A, Newport on the other hand was 2-0 vs the Indians.
