I just saw this so called "team" a little while ago for the first time. All I can say is WOW! First, Nikeman, we in NKY know they play football in other parts of the state. Thanks for that valuable information.

 

I can honestly say this is the worst "all-star" type of team I have seen for any sport at any level...ever! I know ALL of these type teams have a flawed process in determining them but this takes it to a completely new and incredibly absurd level. The first team kicker was 7 for 12 in FG's with his longest FG being 46 yards. HUH? Does that sound like a first team all-state kicker to anyone? He may be great but his numbers do not even come close to adding up to first team all state. Donovan McCoy was first team all state on one team and not one of the best 21 on this list? Anyway, I think we all know that this list is nothing more than a complete joke. The CJ should be embarrassed.

You're right! They do! But out of 6 classes, 2 state champs, 1 state runner up, and 1 state semi-finalist were all within 10-15 miles of each other...in NKY! I have to think there has to be some good players on those teams. And if you count Cov Cath, which was a top ten team in the state regardless of class and would have won 4A if not for HHS IMO, you have another group of kids.

 

Please don't try to defend it by saying there are other kids in the state. I'm sure there are. Im sure every kid on the list is good or did something special for their team. But are they the BEST in the state at their position??? Is it really an All State team beacuse a coach didnt respond to an email or two that was probably sent as they were preparing for their playoff games. No one thinks they got it even close to right. It's a flawed process and it really comes down to who is at fault for coming up with and publishing a list that is so far off. Blame the coaches or the CJ. I agree that if they have a process and it was followed exactly the way it has always been followed and they put the same effort into it every year and this is the result we get, I for one will not trust the CJ any longer because the process is a pretty crappy process for such a reputable entity. Either take control and OWN the list or call it a coach's poll.

I have seen a lot of players on this list whose names were passed around on ListServ by their coaches.

 

By the same token, if you read some of the emails on the ListServ, with their unreadable content, impossible spelling, and often complete lack of tact, it is no surprise some of the coaches struggle to get a vote into the Courier.

I would like to point out omissions that certainly deserved to be named in some fashion in this state-wide at least for one position - QB. And doing so using some objective numbers.

 

Criteria:

 

- Efficiency rating - 167 or above. Why 167? Its above the QBs named in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd team. Calculator link here.

- Top 15 in Yards per game for regular season (because KHSAA uses that as their top 15 for QBs). Minimum 214 yards per game. Link here.

- TDs in 10 games (again because KHSAA keeps it for the 10 req season games.). Use 20 or 2 per game as baseline. Link here.

 

Using the above here are the players who met all of the above who were not named even to honorable mention. I also added rushing stats since it is apparent that some still like a 'running oriented QB'.

 

- Zach Carmichael, Anderson County. Eff. Rating - 196.7, 2331 yards (10 games), 27 TD (10 games) - - 679 yards (2nd on team), 9 rushing TDs.

- Chris Hawkins, Frankfort. Eff. Rating - 208.0, 2045 yards (9 games), 23 TDs (9 games), Rushing yards - 225 yards (4th on team), 3 rushing TDs.

- Donovan McCoy, Highlands. Eff. Rating - 182.2, 1949 yards (9 games), 26 TDs (9 games), Rushing yards - 1144 (1st on team), 22 rushing TDs

 

I think the modern QB is mostly measured by their passing. Hence I started looking the efficiency ratings of those passed up that I was familiar with. I think did it for all the QBs in KHSAA's 'top 15' list. KHSAA does not publish the college efficiency rating but the numbers for the calculations are all there. By the way the top QB in the top 15 (or 16 since for some reason the Trinity QB is not listed in the KHSAA top 15) is Logan Woodside of Franklin County. What is his rating? Try 285. That is not a typo - 285. He also averaged over 24 yards a completion. A scan of some of the top 15 and I found only one other QB with over 20 yards per completion - Chris Hawkins. Most on the top 15 list were in the mid to upper teens.

 

So along with McCoy it looks like Carmichael and Hawkins are also in the 'most overlooked' catagory for this one position.

 

So again, congratulations to all who were named and even some of those who were not. Many deserving kids were omitted.

Let a non Highlands fan be the first one to say ...WHAT THE HECK? This team is so lacking in Northern Kentucky players it loses credibility. If I counted right, there are 5 players from Northern Kentucky named.

 

There has to be some explanation. McCoy is AP first team all state and he isn't even named on this team. Twenty-one QB's are named on this team and McCoy is not one of them. This team makes the AP team look like geniuses at work.

That is an impressive ratio. And a 202.5 rating. Glad he was in the mix.

My point is if you were going by just stats he would be the 1st team qb but Jake is a very good qb and is one of the best. Is he the best?A little under sized and plays within himself and is very smart. To me stats just tell part the story, there are other things that go into selecting these teams.

1st team linebacker with 82 tackles? Get real. Jared Bowling had 154 at Simon Kenton, 6 sacks, Top 26 and played great in the Best of the Bluegrass and not a mention in this list. What a JOKE.

A lot of the people that made it played garbage schedules as well
