Beau Buchanan, Bowling Green (7-1, ranked #2 in 5A)

 

Week 8: Last Friday night was a night to forget if you are in any way, shape, or form associated with Bowling Green football. The Purples were simply outclassed in every way by Warren Central (IN). Buchanan must have felt like he was playing against the ‘85 Bears. He finished 11 of 27 for 40 yards and a TD.

 

Season to date: 142 of 236 for 1,695 yards and 17 TDs with 4 ints.

Joey Cambron, Daviess County (4-4, unranked in 6A)

 

Week 8: Cambron was 17 of 38 for 281 yards and 5 TDs in a 54-41 loss to Henderson County. He was picked off twice. The Panthers’ offense put up the points to win, but the defense let them down again.

 

Season to date: 164 of 281 for 2197 yards and 25 with 12 ints.

Gavin Spurrier, South Warren (8-0, ranked #3 in 5A)

 

Week 8: The Spartans were off last week. They return to action this Friday versus Bowling Green.

 

 

Braxton Ratliff, Ashland (9-0, ranked #3 in 4A)

 

Week 8: Ratliff accounted for 235 yards of total offense as the Tomcats rolled over Greenup County, 46-21. He was a very efficient 13 of 18 through the air.

 

Season to date: 82 of 131 for 1,458 yards and 14 TDs with 4 ints. ; 66 rushes for 635 yards and 6 TDs

Greenup County High School - Braxton Ratliff highlights - Hudl

 

 

Chase Estep, Corbin (7-1, ranked #2 in 3A)

 

Week 8: The Hounds defeated Bell County 33-14 while only running 35 plays, only six of which were passes. Estep completed all six of those throws for 56 yards. He only carried the ball once, but it went for a 25 yard TD.

 

Season to date: 99 of 141 for 1,802 yards with 23 TDs and 4 ints. ; 60 rushes for 376 yards and 6 TDs

Cameron Jones, Frederick Douglass (8-0, ranked #2 in 6A)

 

Week 8: The Broncos were off last week. They travel to Henry Clay to decide the district championship this Friday.

 

 

Wiley Cain, Pulaski County (6-2, ranked #10 in 5A)

 

Week 8: Cain set the skies over London, KY ablaze with 423 yards and three touchdown passes in Pulaski's 43-16 win over South Laurel. Jake Sloan, the state's leader in receptions and yards, hauled in 15 of those balls for 259 yards and a touchdown.

 

Season to date: 199 of 305 for 2,422 yards and 21 TDs with 6 ints.

Will Warren, Owensboro (6-2, ranked #8 in 5A)

 

Week 8: Warren came over from Owensboro Catholic last off-season and brought his considerable arm talent with him. In Owensboro's 40-0 win over Apollo, he chucked the pigskin for 373 yards and 5 TDs. It marked the third time this season that he's thrown at least 4 TDs in a game. Those are numbers Owensboro hasn't seen in a while.

 

Season to date: 147 of 239 for 2,142 yards and 25 TDs with 9 ints.

Running Backs

 

Wandale Robinson, Western Hills (6-2, ranked #10 in 3A)

 

Week 8: Per usual, Robinson did a little bit of everything in the Wolverines’ 42-34 win over Garrard County. He rushed for 181 yards, scored 4 TDs, completed one pass for a 35 yard TD, registered 15 tackles, and recorded one sack (one of his 5 tackles for loss). Did I forget anything. Oh yeah, he also forced two fumbles.

 

Season to date: 150 carries for 1,560 yards and 25 TDs ; 17 catches for 367 yards and 7 TDs ; 2 TD passes ; 2 kick return TDs ; 85 tackles (10 TFL) ; 3 interceptions (1 pick-six) ; 5 forced fumbles

Casey McGinness, Covington Catholic (8-0, ranked #1 in 5A)

 

Week 8: McGinness showed up big when his team needed him most. His 203 yards and 2 TDs helped carry CovCath to victory over Highlands when the passing game never took flight.

 

Season to date: 142 carries for 1,343 yards and 19 TDs ; 15 catches for 221 yards and 3 TDs

Tre’ Bass, Franklin-Simpson (7-1, ranked #2 in 4A)

 

Week 8: Bass only touched the ball 5 times in Franklin-Simpson’s 62-20 win over Warren Central, but he made the most of his opportunities. He rushed for 118 yards and 3 TDs.

 

Season to date: 79 carries for 1,115 yards and 18 TDs

Jayden Neace, Perry County Central (7-1, unranked in 5A)

 

Week 8: Neace rebounded from one of the worst performances of his career to hang 231 yards and 4 TDs on North Laurel in PCC's 27-25 win.

 

Season to date: 184 carries for 1,820 yards and 29 TDs

Kent Trey Matthews, Mayfield (8-0, ranked #1 in 2A)

 

Week 8: Mayfield has yet to report stats for last week

 

 

Landan Swartz, Bath County (6-2, unranked in 3A)

 

Week 8: Swartz turned in a workmanlike performance in Bath's 32-0 win over Fleming County, toting the rock 29 times for 166 yards and 3 TDs. He was arguably more impactful on the defensive side of the ball, picking off three passes. The Wildcats will host Russell this week with a chance to win their first district title in over 20 years.

 

Season to date: 192 rushes for 1,606 yards and 20 TDs ; 2 kick return TDs ; 35 tackles ; 5 ints.

Fleming County High School - Landan Swartz highlights - Hudl

 

 

Joe Jackson, Johnson Central (7-1, ranked #1 in 4A)

 

Week 8: The Golden Eagles concluded the elementary portion of their schedule with a 57-7 destruction of Rowan County. Jackson only ran the ball four times for 42 yards and a TD. He'll have an opportunity for a statement game this week versus Ashland.

 

Season to date: 121 rushes for 1,153 yards and 18 TDs ; 2 receiving TDs

Dalton Cook, Lynn Camp (8-0, ranked #9 in 1A)

 

Week 8: When you rush for 190 yards and most people's reaction is… meh, you know you're having a monster year. That's the situation Cook finds himself in. One-hundered-ninety yards doesn't really move the needle anymore. But what does move the needle is Lynn Camp's record, which now stands at 8-0 after they blasted Harlan 48-13 last week. The biggest game of their season is this Friday versus Williamsburg.

 

Season to date: 121 carries for 1,889 yards and 24 TDs

Demarco Fishback, Frederick Douglass (8-0, ranked #2 in 6A)

Demontae Crumes, Butler (7-2, ranked #4 in 6A)

 

Week 8: Butler hammered Eastern 41-0 last Friday, but Crumes was more than held in check. His one catch for 18 yards was his worst game in several weeks. This week's clash with St. X will provide him a platform to shine.

 

Season to date: 26 catches for 632 yards and 10 TDs

Marquel Tinsley, Daviess County (4-4, unranked in 6A)

 

Week 8: Tinsley had a pretty average night by his standards - 5 catches for 92 yards and a TD - in Daviess County's 54-41 loss to Henderson County. We've reached the point where these losses will start to nudge him and Cambron to the fringes of the watchlist.

 

Season to date: 54 receptions for 995 yards and 13 TDs

Bryan Hudson, Scott County (6-3, ranked #7 in 6A)

 

Week 8: Scott County has yet to post stats from last week

 

 

Jacob Lacey, South Warren (8-0, ranked #3 in 5A)

 

Week 8: The Spartans were off last week. They return to action this Friday versus Bowling Green.

 

 

Tanner Bowles, Glasgow (7-1, ranked #6 in 2A)

 

Week 8: Bowles helped pave the way for another huge game from Nick Mitchell and Glasgow's rushing attack. The Scotties pounded out 389 yards rushing in a 42-21 win over Monroe County.

Milton Wright, Christian Academy of Louisville (8-0, ranked #2 in 2A)

 

Week 8: CAL didn't require too much of Wright in dispatching Shawnee 63-14. He caught a couple of balls for 42 yards and a touchdown, and added a score on a kickoff return. He saw little to no action on defense.

 

Season to date: 39 catches for 498 yards and 5 TDs ; 15 rushes for 139 yards and 3 TDs ; 2 kick return TDs ; 29 tackles (3.5 TFL)

Logan Castleman, Beechwood (6-2, ranked #1 in 1A)

 

Week 8: Castleman had an off night in Beechwood's 62-13 rout of Ludlow. He only managed 26 yards on 8 carries. He did find the endzone once.

 

Season to date: 90 carries for 728 yards and 11 TDs ; 11 catches for 100 yards and 2 TDs ; 3 ints. (2 returned for TDs)

Drew Sawyers, Southwestern (8-0, ranked #5 in 5A)

 

Week 8: Sawyers found the endzone three different ways in the Warriors’ 55-7 win over Lincoln County. He accounted for 279 yards of total offense, with 2 TDs rushing and 1 throwing. He also added a pick-six on defense.

 

Season to date: 48 of 79 for 785 yards and 7 TDs ; 89 rushes for 856 and 10 TDs ; 2 interceptions (1 pick-six) ; 4 kick return TDs

Those Wandale Robinson stats are CRAZY!!!

Chase Estep from Corbin has only ran the ball once the past 3 games since sustaining an ankle injury in the Mayfield game. He also has only thrown it 40 times in the 3 games, although he completed 35 of those. His Mr. Football stock has probably taken a big hit during this period as well.

Is this award based solely on player stats. or, is there a committee that goes around and see's all these athletes in person, in order to cast a vote of this magnitude ?

Is there anyone really close to challenging Mr Robinson? This kid is just amazing!

It is often referred to as a balanced offense. There is more than one player on CAL’s team. Wright is not going to show gaudy numbers on offense or defense.

I understand, but if I have a D1 skill player on my team hes getting over 10 touches every single game. Period.

Why risk injury when you winning comfortably just to pad stats. There are several other D1 players on this team. Antonio Brown has been averaging 5.5 touches the last 4 games and he is still the best receiver in the NFL. When it come to the point Wright needs more touches, he will get more touches.

 

Robinson will win Mr Football. He is fun to watch. Is he the best player in the state at the next level? I doubt it, but I hope he proves me wrong. I like when the local kids succeed.

When CAL lost at Mayfield last year in the state semifinals he barely touched the ball. Antonio Brown is playing against other NFL players. Milton Wright is not playing against very many D1 players. I do understand preserving him and not risking injury. Would just like to see him shine more I guess.
