East Carter 68 Raceland 42 (16th Region 1st Round)
I thought Raceland looked a little nerveous last night in Morehead. They had alot of trouble shooting free throws and making easy baskets. IMO they were a little over confident coming out in the first half. But they did make a couple descent runs in the second half and seemed to be much more awake. Also they ran into a hot East Carter team, seemed like they couldnt miss all night. Congratulations to East Carter on the win and best of luck the rest of the way. Also congrats to the Rams on a very good season and a district championship. You guys worked hard all year and accomplished alot.

North-Eastern Kentucky East/West All-Star Game
My fault, Russelldad. I must have accidently overlooked his name. Thanks for the info.

Is Mike Salmons coaching at Raceland?
I agree Cville. Mike has been great with the players and they seem to really respect him. He was an outstanding high school and college football player. I would put up the argument that Raceland might have the top coaching staff in Class A.

Your favorite memory as a Raceland Ram
Great posts guys! I enjoyed reading all of them and they are all very true. Raceland is truely a special place. That small school overflows with pride and tradition. One of my favorite times during the season would have to be going through the team camps for a week during the summer. That week during the summer is hot, miserable, and can be very tough on a young man's body. The coaches are all over you during the 4 a-day practices (Offensive practice, Defensive practice, Special teams practice, and weightlifting). You are forced to wake up at 6 AM every morning and most of the time you dont get to sleep until after midnight. As horrible as this week is, some of my best memories with my teammates come from this week of camp. Being around your teammates 24/7 for a full 5 days really creates a since of unity and brotherhood that you never forget. The bonds made that week shape your desire and attitude for the whole season and you really are pushed to your limits. Its a challenging time I wouldnt trade those memories for anything.

High School player who never made it to college.
I think Josh Adkins and Thomas Tolliver have to be mentioned when talking about Racelands greats that did not go on to play college football. Adkins was a head hunter at free safety and was an absolutely fearless running back. Im almost 100% sure he led the Rams in TD's his junior and senior year. His reason for not playing college football was ligit though because he accepted a track scholarship from the University of Louisville. Unfortunately he did not stay at Louisville very long but from what I understand he is enjoying a nice career in the United States Air Force, which suits him well. As for Thomas Tolliver, who was IMO the single most explosive WR I have seen in a Raceland uniform, he continued his athletic career playing baseball for Transy. Tom was an outstanding 3-sport athlete for the Rams.

Any one for spring football?
Trust me, spring football is ALOT different now then it was in 2000. The guys have two full weeks on contact opposed to one and they really get after it every day in practice. Its not as much instruction as there has been in the past, its more about getting phsyical and seeing what players are gonna step up for the up coming season. The Rams coaching staff has improved dramatically over the past 3 years, resulting in a much more efficient spring football and summer program IMO.

Johnson Central Penalized by KHSAA
Well the public schools have to try and keep up with the private schools somehow.

Ironton vs Raceland?
Yea, I dont understand why Russell or Raceland would drop the series after last years turn out. There was a huge crowd and Im sure both schools made a nice profit.

Boyd Co. 49 Raceland 34
I was wrong about this one. Sounds like the Rams were not on top of their game. Any info on Tyler Boyles? Is he sick or injured?

Best Big Men in the 16th Region
I dont know about him being the overall best, but Jacob Sparks from Raceland can hold his own with anybody in the region. He is very athletic for a tall kid and has really stepped up for the rams lately. Him and Boyles are really the driving factors behind the Rams, if they have a big post-season then the Rams will have a shot at making it to the regional championship IMO. Euton is probably the all-around best "big man" in the region because of his abilities to shoot from the outside and work the post. But like I said, Sparks is right up there with him and the other good big men in the region.

Your team's biggest win EVER!
Excellent post Young Gun! I agree with you 100% about the 97' win and the comments about the 2006 team. I am also waiting for the first state championship victory in Ram history. I have a really good feeling about this years team. I cant think of a better way to end the season then enjoying a nice warm slice of Papa Johns Pizza right there in Louisville, watching the Orange and Black get the big trophy! Hopefully we can get Oldrambler, Cvillecat, UT Vol Fan, Ram, Statmaster, Blue Blazer, Yourself, and the whole BluegrassPreps crew down there for a little pre-game meal! GO RAMS!

Best Team In Your School's History
The 2005 Raceland team has the best record in school history with a record of 26-6 i believe. They were regional runner up to Boyd Co.. They got beat in 9 innings by 1 run in the regional championship on a very questionable call. They were a great team, I know Tolliver is now playing baseball at Transy, Darby went to Pikeville to play, Grizzle is a Georgetown playing football, and another key member Peyton Martin is will be a senior at Raceland this year and is being recruited by several colleges and is argueable the #1 player in the 16th region this year.

Russell Trio signs with University of the Cumberlands
There is just not way that he is a d-1 caliber football player IMO. Even the guys that play in the MAC and C USA are outstanding athletes. Kasey Clark was a great high school player and he did not even recieve a full scholarship to play at the d-1AA level. Players who get scholarships to play D-1 or D-1AA football are in a different league then most of the guys around this area. Tyler Jones is a heck of a football player and I think he will have a good career at UC. I dont think he will make an immediate impact because even at an NAIA school its still college football and the players there are VERY good football players. All three of the signees from Russell are very talented but they are goin to have to earn their stripes and go through the growing pains of being a freshman in college. I think Jones will eventually play at UC and have a good career but I dont see him stepping in and getting significant minutes as a freshman. But he will do good things there eventually, he is to talented not to play at UC eventually.

Empty Spots for 16th Region Teams?
Saying that Greenup will not have any competition this year is a bold statement gcguard. That attitude is usually the one that will get you beat in the long run. Boyd, Raceland, and Ashland are all very capable of beating G.C.. They have a good team but I wouldnt put them head and shoulders above anyone else in the region.

Russell Trio signs with University of the Cumberlands
Not knocking Tyler Jones because he is a great high school football player but IMO there is no way he is D-1 caliber. I dont think people realize the type of athletes that play at the division 1 level. People say that eastern kentucky boys get the shaft when it comes to being recruited by d-1 schools but the truth is, we rarely have athletes that are good enough to play division 1. You have to have the speed, size, and athletic ability to compete at that level. Arliss Beach and Chris Jennings are examples of kids who had the ability to pla at the D-1 level and I havent seen any players lately that were as gifted as those two and neither of them were great players on the division one level. Im not putting down any area players because we have some great talent coming through here over the years but I just wanted to say that some people dont quit understand the high level of talent that it takes to play with the big boys. I want to to congratulate these 3 good athletes on there college choice and let them know that whether you are competing at the D-1 level or the NAIA level it is still a great accomplishment because not just anyone can step onto a college football field. It takes a great athlete and a great commitment to play college football. Best of luck and study hard guys!
