Johnson Central Penalized by KHSAA

Featured Replies

The Johnson Central football program has been penalized and placed on probation for the 2008-09 school year. The program was found to have violated KHSAA recruitment and transfer rules (Bylaws 4 & 10).

The KHSAA also suspended Head Coach Jim Matney for the first two regular season contests of the 2008 season. As part of the ruling, the school was fined $1,000 and required to pay $1,500 in restitution for the cost of the investigation.

Is there a story link?

I was surprised the punishment wasn't more severe.

There has been several new faces dotting the Golden Eagles roster the last couple of years. Most of that has had to do with the recent success of the Eagles football program and Matney's resurrection of a struggling program. However today, we find out, from the KHSAA, that some of those faces showed up on their roster due to bylaws 4 and 10 being broken.

This is a black eye for a program that is finding success and becoming a football power in the Ky state playoffs, not to mention a dominant mountain school program.

However, it will only be a slap on the wrist due to the KHSAA's inability to enforce stiffer punishment.

I will be surprised if the one's involved, who broke bylaw 4 and 10, quit doing what they're already doing.

What exactly are bylaw's 4 and 10?

They are lengthy; but basically they involve student transfers and recruitment respectively.

The KHSAA Bylaws

How ironic considering his criticism after his loss to CCHS.....

I haven't read the release so I don't know what it holds but What I do Know is that Coach Matney is a great coach. One of the hardest workers in the game today. He is respected by his peers and more importantly he is a good person. Good luck coach and We support you.

Not really some of the same violations might have been legal at CCHS.
