CovCath has a long and storied basketball program and it's tough for me to argue anything prior to '75. However Nick Ruthsatz absolutely deserves to be on the list. All time leading scorer and led his team to a State Championship. College basketball is a different animal and Findlay just missed qualifying for the D2 tournament last season and I don't think NKU was a powerhouse in the early '70s. In the 4 years that Derkson was at NKU they did not post a winning record and their schedule was littered with NAIA schools and D3 schools. Findlay plays a significantly tougher schedule at this time than NKU did during those days.

Using your criteria as a benchmark there are very few successful coaches.

Couple of things come to mind.....if the recording is basic game tape and that was submitted to administration then that would seem to be public domain. My question would be those same administrators would have been at multiple games anyway so why would the coaches sideline behavior be news? If the tape was someone sticking a phone into a sideline huddle or a coach/player communication on the bench or a player recording locker room communication not sure I think that is as much for public consumption. If the tape was recorded during a parent/coach meeting behind closed doors without coach's knowledge while it might not be illegal it would certainly be considered underhanded. If indeed Jeff Trame and I still find it difficult to believe that he was involved he served on Coach Carr's staff a couple of years ago and was privy to all of the sideline decorum, lockerroom discussions, parent coach interaction and now it becomes an issue? No secret who my kids are who played for Coach Carr and while my oldest really only played one year of varsity under Carr, Kellen played 4 years of varsity ball for Coach Carr. I can guarantee you no one on the current roster was coached harder for those 4 years. As a parent I can tell you it was not always easy but we weren't looking for easy we were looking for what was best. We had some discussions with Coach Carr at times about what was best for Kellen and other times what was best for the program. His door was always open and sometimes we didn't agree but we always knew that he had Kellen's and the programs best interest at heart. We always shook hands and moved forward. My last thought on this is as Kellen moved onto the next level the things that he learned under Coach Carr carried him thru the many good times but more importantly through the tough times. Sad day for Scott HS when parent driven complaints can lead to this result. Program was in a downward spiral when he took over. He instilled a culture of toughness and accountability the program had lacked and won consistently with lesser talent. Hope the group of parents that got this done are pleased with and be careful for what you wish for!

Been on the road a little and just heard this rumor. Don't have all of the details but there is something going on here. What a shame if Carr did not get to go out on his own terms after everything he has done for that program. Have had two kids play for Coach Carr and the life lessons they learned in the program have contributed in their success at the next level and their personal and professional lives. His style is not for everyone especially in this PC, participation trophy world we live in. What most don't see is how much he invests in these players off of the court.

Kids choose to play DII for a variety of reasons hence the DII logo "I chose DII" For some it is highest level that they were recruited and others with D1 interest it could be early playing time, academics, proximity to family. I always find in humorous when someone talks about a player and says he is only a D2 player. I would bet that person has at best only seen a handful of D2 games if any. As I have said many times here on BGP D2 is legit. There are 300+ D1 teams and most of us only get to watch/follow teams that appear on TV and would probably be in the top 100. There is a very thin line between the top D2 teams and the majority (bottom 2/3) D1. The opportunity to play at Bellarmine and get a great education close to home and compete for conference championships and national championships on an annual basis seems like a pretty good deal to me. Bellarmine also does a great job getting their players opportunities to play overseas after their career is over. Someone tweeted a couple of years ago while watching the D2 National Championship game that there were D2 & D3 players who could be playing D1 and there were D1 players who should be playing D2 & D3. So I have a slight bias towards D2 and my D1/D2 rant is now over!:taz:

When hasn't Carr played a brutal schedule? Traditionally plays as tough a schedule as anyone outside of probably Covington Catholic the last few years. Has always scheduled top tier 10th Region teams and a few out of region highly ranked opponents and a top notch Christmas tournament. Throw in your NKAC/9th Region teams and always a difficult schedule. Nothing out of the ordinary this season.

Carr has had better teams playing in extremely tight regional semi's and a couple of region finals that did not go there way. This Scott team is a 13-16 team that lost in first round of region. Even with Campbell Co losing did not see this team putting together a 3 game run.

Ethan will be playing college ball just a couple of hours up the road. Tough decision to continue coaching at the high school level or do the road trips to watch Ethan at the next level. Think Coach Snapp does a really good job in an extremely difficult environment.

Think a lot of people were expecting a breakout year from Hawkins. Apparently was healthy enough and played well enough on the summer circuit for Belmont and Lipscomb to come watch him in preseason open gyms? Interesting skill set for a kid his size but not sure it has translated to success at the high school level yet.

After watching the Holy Cross/Campbell County game last night if Scott goes into the Fieldhouse and pulls out a win I would say they were the best team in the 10th at this point in the season.

10th Region has always been very small school centric. There are a lot of players who put up big numbers at these small schools while some players who played at Scott and Campbell County don't get those opportunities against that small school schedule. Scott is a relative newcomer to the 10th as well. Won't make the argument that Kellen should be in the top 20 but he should be in that 20-25 area based on his resume at the high school level and will follow up with a solid career at the D2 level in college.

With the growth of the showcase type events and Nike, Adidas and Under Armour basically having their own circuits now AAU is no longer the premier event. While their are still elite teams and organizations that participate in AAU the competition level is just not what it used to be. I just don't get that excited when I hear about teams making a run in D2. If you feel you are good enough to win the D2 championship play D1 and at least go against the best that play at the AAU level. Just my opinion....

I thought I remembered that you took some shots when you mentioned that in an earlier thread. As I have said before D2 is legit in terms of quality basketball and the educational opportunities can be comparable as well.

The fact that Woodland is even in the conversation is interesting. They had 3 starters pulled up to the freshmen team at Scott less than a week before their first game. Don't typically give 8th grade coaches a lot of kudos but to even have them in the conversation is a heck of an accomplishment

Have only seen Jackson a few times at the high school level and more times at the AAU level. Nice pick up for Kentucky State. Like most players he is going to have to get stronger to be successful at the next level and just be prepared for the grind of college basketball. No easy days in practice and no off nights on game day. I can tell talk a little more about Kentucky State. They currently play in the SIAA and have had limited success so far this season. They have lost a LOT of close games. With the growth of the GMAC they will have the opportunity to continue to play a decent out of conference schedule. SIAA is not one of the stronger D2 conferences with the top program at this time being Paine (Ga). They are currently ranked just outside of the top 25 with no other programs getting votes. Kentucky State roster has a lot of JUCO players and transfers at this time. I think the current staff is working very hard to recruit more at the high school level and get more 4 year players into the program. I think they are very close to being very competitive within that conference. I think Jackson will have a solid opportunity there.

Carr has indeed changed his coaching style over the years but he is still demanding and intense. He is much more reserved on the sidelines and in the huddle. I would imagine that he finds it frustrating to be coaching effort at this point in the season. While he doesn't have a lot of seniors these players have all grown up in the program. Carr did use his timeouts last night. If my memory is correct he used 3 in the first quarter and half that the starters/regular rotation players played. Was not ballistic in any of the timeouts and appeared to be coaching them up from a phrase used earlier in the thread. Did all he could to stop the Boone County runs from the sideline. Team was beaten down the court consistently last night and they continue to have issues guarding in the half court. They were down by 25 and had only scored 11 points in a quarter and a half when he pulled his starters. Have to be able to win games when shots aren't falling and that starts with a tough mentality and being able to get stops on the defensive side.

Big kids with potential don't play in big games. If they haven't played they are not ready for that environment. It's on the current team. It's great to be able to score 20 but if you give up 20+ on the other end????

Carr has been very successful in the past coaching teams with little to no size. Those teams were very good defensive teams. Defense and toughness are a choice. Until a few of their players decide that they want to be lockdown defenders Scott will play entertaining games but tough to beat good teams consistently playing bad defense Carr's best teams have always been about toughness. Don't think he has changed.
