Campbell County guard Dre Jackson committed to Kentucky State

Featured Replies

2015 Campbell County guard Dre Jackson committed to Kentucky State a little over a week ago shortly after he picked up an offer from the Thoroughbreds. Dre had other offers from Ohio Valley (WV), Wheeling Jesuit (WV) and Urbana (OH) and St. Leo (FL) was close to offering as well.

Dre opened up a bit and said that his visit to the Kentucky State campus really swayed him. “I chose Kentucky State because when I went up there to visit it felt like home. Everything just seemed right and the atmosphere down there was crazy.” He also really liked the coaching staff at Kentucky State, and said that his main recruiter, Coach Darnell Williams, did a good job of keeping in touch and checking on him. “He checked up with me everyday… Every time we talked it wasn’t always about basketball. He asked about me, my mom, grades and everything else.”

Staying close to home, their style of play and he thinks he has the chance to make an impact early in his career. Dre told me that his game is perfect for the Kentucky State system. However, Dre knows in order for him to make the biggest impact possible at Kentucky State he needs to continue improving. He mentioned getting stronger, becoming a better ball-handler and improving defensively as some of the things he’s focusing on right now.

Dre ended our conversation by thanking some of the people who have helped him reach this point. “I am extremely proud to be a Thoroughbred next year. I want to thank my coaches for this opportunity and also my AAU coach because without him none of this would be possible.”

Congrats Dre!

Dre moved to Campbell County before his soph year. He has played his AAU ball with the NKY Bulldogs. Silky smooth guard with a quick first step. He scores well at all 3 levels.

It has been fun watching him develop these last 3 years. He will do very well at KY State.

Have only seen Jackson a few times at the high school level and more times at the AAU level. Nice pick up for Kentucky State.

Like most players he is going to have to get stronger to be successful at the next level and just be prepared for the grind of college basketball. No easy days in practice and no off nights on game day.

I can tell talk a little more about Kentucky State. They currently play in the SIAA and have had limited success so far this season. They have lost a LOT of close games. With the growth of the GMAC they will have the opportunity to continue to play a decent out of conference schedule. SIAA is not one of the stronger D2 conferences with the top program at this time being Paine (Ga). They are currently ranked just outside of the top 25 with no other programs getting votes.

Kentucky State roster has a lot of JUCO players and transfers at this time. I think the current staff is working very hard to recruit more at the high school level and get more 4 year players into the program. I think they are very close to being very competitive within that conference. I think Jackson will have a solid opportunity there.
