St. X - Bryan Station state championship game 1999.

I liked watching the state championship games there because no matter the weather, you were under a roof.

Sivori played well enough to keep the Tigers in the game. 2 key special teams mistakes cost the Tigers the game in my opinion. In the first half, St. X got a punt blocked deep in their own territory which set up a Male score. In the 4th quarter, the St. X defense had made a key stop, but the Tigers muffed the punt which set up Male on the 30 yard line going in. In a game with adversity such as playing a backup QB with limited practice time (regardless of whether of not he is a freshman), special teams have to be an advantage. Instead, they were a liability on Friday night for the Tigers. The offense and defense, while not playing perfectly, played well enough to eek out a tough win; the special teams did not.

This is a very interesting game. Throughout all of their struggles this season, Trinity is getting many of their key players healthy. In the first two games of the season, when they had most of their players on the field, they looked very formidable against some really good out of state teams. Their team this year did not have the depth as they have in years past to overcome such a slew of injuries.

To me, for the first three rounds it should be up to the school with the home game as to where the game will be played. If they want to play it in their home mud pit, then so be it. If they want to move it to a neutral site, then so be it. They earned the home game by favorable seeding through their performance in the regular season. As far as the semifinal games, I think they should be played on neutral sites due to the rotating nature of the games. Seeding does not play a part in who is the home team for semifinal games, so they should not get a say in where it is played.

I think it is more of a scheme thing than anything. The Tigers really need a short-yardage/goal line package where they are able to go under center with multiple TE's and/or lead blockers at times and they need to be willing to use it more. There were three 3rd-and-1's in the game Friday where they were unable to convert while attempting to run from the shotgun. That would have been bad when facing a typical Trinity offense, or any other good team for that matter, that could have made them pay for the inability to convert. The Tigers did go under center one time on 4th-and-inches and run QB sneak for the first down, so that at least have it in their repertiore to go under center for the QB sneak. If they are extremely averse to going under center, they maybe they could run a pistol formation with a lead blocker in the backfield similar to what Kentucky does. At least then, they could get their back running downhill with a lead blocker. All in all, though, the Tigers are making progress from early in the season. They just have to come up with some better answers for situational football.

That is some weird scheduling to have the final home game of the regular season on the first weekend of October.

Congrats to the Tigers! Good win which was much-needed to make the series competitive. St. X Defense vs. Trinity Offense: The St. X defense played a really solid game. Good pressure on the QB, fairly tight coverage on the receivers, good job of shutting down the screen game. Good job of stopping the run with the exception of a few plays. Trinity's run game is pretty good, but their passing game is so inept this year (am I really saying this??) that the run game is suffering for it. They were not able to effectively throw the ball downfield with any consistency at all. Part of that is a tribute to the Tiger Defense. Part if that is due to poor QB play by Trinity. St. X Offense vs. Trinity Defense: The Tiger offense struggled for most of the first half with the exception of the final drive of the half. It really helped them to get that score at the end of the half to establish some momentum. Some of the sloppy play was due to the typical nerves for this game, part of was due to a really good Trinity defense. St. X made some key plays in the passing game in the second half which allowed them to win the game. The Tiger run game was very inconsistent (and mostly bad) for the better part of the game. The passing game in the new system implemented by Coach Wallace is showing some signs of life. The run game must get better to be able to win games in the playoffs. There were several times in the game Friday when the Tigers simply could not come up with a key run when the situation called for it. Special Teams: The punters for both teams were outstanding. In the first half, the St. X punter repeatedly pinned the Trinity offense inside the 15, which allowed the Tigers to dominate field position in the first half. The Trinity punter boomed the ball several times from his own end zone to keep the game. The coverage units for both teams were solid as expected. Neither team's place kicker was particularly impressive, which is a rarity for this series.

No as far as accepting coaching passes.

It is certainly possible, but unlikely. Irregardless, I think they will be tough to beat in November.

Tigers by 21 at home. In this series, St. X usually wins by a comfortable margin at home, and it is typically a very tight game at The Hive.

For the first time in several years, there are several teams who have a legitimate shot to win 6A.

Congratulations Scott County!! Glad to see teams not only take on tough opponents, but also to beat them. 6A football is more interesting and more wide-open this season than I can remember.

It is a coaches decision to base the level of practice intensity and equipment worn on the needs of his team, as long as it is within the rules. Theoretically, a team could practice every day in pads according to the rules. Although not wise, they could.

I think the Lit ratings are pretty close toward the end of the regular season. The sample size is too small this early.

They also have a big, physical running back that is not being utilized optimally. He is the type of runner that would be good running downhill with a lead blocker. That would allow the talented passer to throw to possession receivers from play action. However, I have no problem with them spreading it out at times. The frustrating thing for me is that they also don’t have a package to run the ball downhill from under center when the situation warrants. Trinity does it. DeSales did it. CAL does it. It makes no sense why St. X can’t do it.

The only thing that is wrong with it is that it does not best fit the personnel that the school consistently gets. I totally agree with you on the importance and lack of enthusiasm from the players. That must improve regardless of the offensive system.
