I believe North has the better defense of the two. Central has the better offense thus far. I say Central in a close one.

I think this evenly-matched game will come down to whomever plays better on Friday night in terms of making explosive plays and eliminating costly errors. It would not be a surprise either way.

I have no problem with a player deciding not to come back for the next season. Playing a sport is a lot of work and commitment. However, I have a major problem with a player quitting during the season. I think it is a valuable life lesson to learn to honor your commitment to the group. If, after the season, a player feels like he or she no longer wants to make the commitment, whatever the reason, then there is no shame in choosing to not do it again. But, parents, please don’t let the athlete quit on the team or themselves during the season.

The younger X skill position players look good in both grades 9 and 10. They must develop some linemen to be a truly well-rounded team. The future looks brighter though.

If the weather is wet on Friday, it will negatively affect St. X more than Manual based on styles of play. On a faster track, I would tend to favor St. X. Mud favors Manual, which I think will result in a close game.

I think he has earned the right to leave when he wants to. His record of success is unparalleled. Trinity was a historically outstanding program before he took over, but he has certainly taken them to another level entirely. My comments in the other threads about the talent, or lack thereof, in the past two freshman classes was more of letting the facts tell the story about when he will probably depart.

I think it was a really bad mistake for the CSAA to implement tackle football in 3/4 grades. As it has been stated in this thread previously, once a kid of this age has a negative experience (heat, a hard hit, etc.), it is almost impossible to get him back to the sport once he quits. I think they should go to a padded flag program like implemented by USA football at this age. It would be a good transition to wearing equipment and blocking without the hard hits that come from tackling. I love football. I think that is is the greatest team sport ever devised. It teaches life lessons like no other. However, if we coach it like it is still 1950, like some CSAA coaches do, we may lose the game we love.

I doubt it. In recent years, Trinity has attracted most of their “difference makers” from non-CSAA sources. I would definitely agree with you, though, about the participation numbers in the CSAA. It is, and should be, a major concern for the Louisville area in football.

I am actually basing my statement more on Freshman performance than JV. Freshman performance much more accurately predicts talent levels and future performance. You are very much correct is saying that who is playing in JV has a very direct effect. Back to my original statement, the talent level is simply not there as it has been in the Trinity pipeline. That indicates to me that there is not as much effort going in to attracting future players as perhaps has been done in the past. To me, that is the “tea leaves” talking as to the future intentions of the head coach.

Based on JV and Freshman performance the past 2 years, I can’t see Beatty staying on past next year.

Manual will need to mix it up to challenge the secondary of St. X. If they can, they have a real chance. This is a big game for both schools.

I totally agree with you about mixing it up. I am in no way saying shotgun/pistol is bad. It can be very effective as well. But there is no reason not to have the capacity to do both when needed. Also, I think the play action game is more convincing/effective from under center. Trinity does a nice job with this as well.

St. X’s inability to run the ball when they need to against good teams, particularly Trinity and Male, has been an Achilles heel for the program for the past several years. Until they get this rectified, they will struggle to win those big games in the future. I have no problem with spreading it out and throwing the ball. I think good teams need to be able to do that as well. However, there does not seem to be a commitment from the program to running the football and being a physical team. I have said this many times on the website, and I will continue to say it: I don’t understand why St. X has to operate out of the shotgun/pistol basically 100% of the time. There is a time and place for getting under center and having a more down-hill type running game and complimentary play action passing game. Trinity does this very effectively, and they are also very proficient at spread stuff. One would think St. X could learn from this. Obviously that is not part of the offensive philosophy of the current regime, though.

This will be the first true test for Central Hardin. It will be interesting to see how they compete. My gut feeling says that they will play well.

I had no problem with what Trinity did vs. the false starts. If the center moves the ball, he is entitled to be hit.

I agree about the future being bright for the Tigers in the skill positions. They need to reclaim their dominance on the lines of scrimmage.

It was an embarrassing loss for the Tigers. They were dominated much more than the scoreboard indicated. For St. X to take the next step, they must be able to hold up on the lines of scrimmage. Congratulations to Trinity. Trinity did a good job of mixing it up on offense. They spread it out at times and ran 2 TE’s at times. They ran and passed. They got in shotgun/pistol as well as operating from under center. I will never understand the 100% shotgun philosophy that St. X has. To me it is just unsound football. They do some really good things with their offense, but to never get under center to both run and pass simply baffles me.
