  1. “Saint X is going to have find a way to bring in some better talent at key positions if they want to compete on the top tier level.” While I agree that more talent would help, I think it is more important to run an offensive system that better fits and utilizes the players that they have. Wisconsin and Stanford are two shining examples. They are programs that know who they are and play to their strengths. And they are very successful doing so. Imagine what they would be like if they tried to run a spread system with the type of players they get. Coach Wallace is a very good coach, and his system fit the talents at Bowling Green perfectly. I’m just not sure it fits St. X. Sometimes you have to run what you need to run as opposed to what you want to run.
  2. As long as a team end up with 10 or fewer games during the season, they play a legal schedule. It really doesn’t matter win those games are scheduled.
  3. They have played three national-caliber opponents. They have lost by combined 11 points . I think that they will be just fine. If I were a Trinity fan, the injuries would concern me a lot more than the record.
  4. 42 points. Only running in the second half.
  5. Good job by the Tigers special teams, especially for a first game. Blocked a punt for a TD, ran a kickoff back for a TD, and had a big punt return of about 50 yards to set up a score.
  6. Safety and slot. A few snaps at RB.
  7. I think a team that does not have the capacity in their offense to go under center is not a well-rounded offense. Likewise, a team that ONLY goes under center is not a well-rounded offense either. There is a time and a place for both. I like under-center most of the time for short-yardage and goalline to maintain the threat of the QB sneak. This threat of the QB sneak makes the previously-mentioned sweep an even better play. Also, I believe the play-action passing game is more effective and convincing from under center than from Gun in short-yardage and goalline. Look at a team like Trinity. They have the capacity in their system to operate from under center as well and shotgun and pistol.
  8. Agreed. And 45 rushing yards is not going to get it either.
  9. This game was not on the quarterback. He was 17–24 for about 260 yards. That is pretty decent for a back up. He threw a couple of interceptions, but one of them was at the end of the first half on the play called that Coach Wallace admitted was not a good one. This loss is on the lack of a tough, physical running game and an efficient red zone offense. Also, the defense needed a stop on the final DeSales drive of the game and could not come up with one. DeSales drove the ball 85 yard right down the throat of the tiger defense on their final scoring drive. The DeSales running game also converted a crucial first down after the final tiger turn over to seal the victory.
  10. Congratulations to DeSales. A hard-fought victory. 5 trips to the red zone for the Tigers nets 10 points. Inexcusable. There will always be a place in football for an under-center power attack at times when needed. Not in the arsenal at this point for the Tigers.
  11. Instituting the dead period is the best rule that the KHSAA has adopted in my opinion. I would not mind adding another week to it, but that is not a deal-breaker for me.
  12. 2009 St. Xavier swept fall sports.
  13. I say don't start the season 2 weeks earlier, but instead trim 2 weeks off of the regular season.
  14. During a scrimmage at football camp, our center and guard both missed a block resulting in a very small nose guard from the opponent tackling our running back for a loss. As our coach requested that we line it back up to discuss, the following took place: Coach our Center: "How much do you weigh?" Center: "200, sir." Coach to our Guard: "How much do you weigh?" Guard: "210, sir." Coach to the opponent noseguard: "Son, how much do you weigh?" Nose guard: (in a very squeaky voice) "145, sir." Coach: Son, you must be part wolverine!
  15. Great win and performance by Coach Nickell and the Bruins.
  16. It will make it tougher for a team outside of Jefferson Co. to win a title.
  17. Properly-taught contact in the name of safety is what is being discussed. The main advantage that I think Spring Football has is it allows time to work on basic techniques without having to worry about an opponent or game plan.
  18. How long was Mojo at Henderson Co.?
  19. No reason other than the self-imposed limitations that some districts put on themselves.
  20. I am not sure kids are any different than in any era. They just have a different set of obstacles to overcome than maybe we did. That is why they need football now more than ever. For many kids, football practice is the only time they get told "no." Or the only time they have to truly work for what they get. That is why we must continue to sell our game and not let these opportunities to learn how to be a man get tossed by the wayside.
  21. I did not see the young man who won the award play in person. I'm sure he is very deserving. All I know is Rondale Moore is one of the most talented high school players I have seen in any year. I hope it wasn't just anti-Trinity sentiment that caused him to not get it.
  22. First of all, I am a fan of all sports, and I think there are benefits to all of them. My children play a wide variety of them. One thing that makes football unique is the team aspect of it. You have to depend on your teammates and they have to depend on you more than any other sport. No matter how good that QB is, he must have a good snap from the center, good blocking from his line and backs, good routes by the receivers, and the receiver has to catch the ball. That has to all be a coordinated effort. Additionally, football requires a high physical toughness. Hitting, playing through some pain, overcoming adversity. Although these are not innate to some players, they can be developed. Football requires playing in all types of weather. In the beginning of the season, intense heat. In the playoffs, cold weather. Football also a delayed gratification sport for the most part. It usually involves sacrificing early, getting bigger and stronger while learning techniques, and finally showing your stuff.
  23. We can't just sit back and let our game be destroyed by misinformation, though. We have to actively sell it and its benefits. We have to be proactive instead of reactive.
