Long-Tenured Coaches

Featured Replies

Some of this year's head coaching departures got me thinking. You've got Kevin Wallace leaving Bowling Green after 22 years as a head coach, and 24 straight years coaching at BG. John Edge just left Owensboro Catholic after 13 years as the head coach.

Probably better for a different "list", but Dan Wagner just left New Cath after 5 years as head coach and probably 20 years as an assistant.

Who else is there....Haywood at Belfry. He's been there since the 80s. Not sure exactly how many years, though.

Rash at Beechwood. He's been head coach for 12 years and was an assistant there for years previous.

Mueller at Highlands. 20 years as head coach. Not sure how many years he spent as an assistant at HHS.

Ray at Cov Cath. 30 years as head coach. Not sure how many years as an assistant.

Schneider was at New Cath basically forever, haha. No clue what his total tally was for years as head coach.

What was Marksberry's first season as head coach at SK?

What was Marksberry's first season as head coach at SK?

I think he has been the head coach for 20 years now.

Randy Borchers has been the only coach Cooper has every had. 2018 will be his 11th year as HC. He also doubles has the AD which I think he has held for the last 8 or 9 years if I am not mistaken.

This fall will be Bob Beatty's 18th season at Trinity.

How many years was Schneider at NewCath? 40?

Ivan McGlone was at Russell for 38 years, all as the head coach. Prior to that, he spent four years as the head man at Vinson (WV) High School. His time at Russell has to place him high on the list of longest tenured coaches at one school in Kentucky (maybe trailing only Schneider at NewCath?)

Just found out. Head coach from 66-09, and an assistant in 63, 64 and 65. 44 years as head coach, 47 years straight coaching at New Cath.

@ Colonels_Wear_Blue, after doing a little digging, I found some info...

Bob Schneider - 44 years, all at Newport Central Catholic

Walter Brugh - 39 years, all at Paintsville

Ivan McGlone - 38 years, all at Russell

Mike Glaser - 32 years, all at St. X

As far as I can tell, those are the longest tenured coaches in Kentucky history, who spent their entire careers at the same school. Haywood has been at it for over 40 years, but his first several years as a head coach were at Prestonsburg, before arriving at Belfry. I think he's been captaining the Pirates ship since '84.

Brad Hood is the longest tenured around here now that Coach Wallace and John Myers have moved on. He's completed 12 seasons at Allen County-Scottsville. He's definitely the longest tenured in what is the basketball 4th Region.

As an FYI, Coach Wagner at New Cath was a freshman assistant from 1980-85, then he was a varsity assistant from 1999-2012, and head coach from 2013-17.

Jerry Perry was at Garrard County from 1990-96 and now again from 2014-present. That makes eleven years total.

Chuck Smith has a similar split long term total at Boyle County.

How long was Owen Hauck at Boone?

Plus I have no idea what year Yeagle started at Beechwood as an assistant, or what year he took over as a head coach - 85 or 86 I think for head coach? Plus I think Bernie Barre spent a good decade or so as head coach for the Tigers.
