I didn’t see the game. What coaching mistakes did they make?

I think the 2020 defense was better, but the 2011 team was better from top to bottom. Way better. The defense was almost as good as the one from this year, and the offense was way more explosive in 2011.

Also, offensive line did not play well. Still a major concern.

Some brief St. X observations: - Defense played well against the run. Pass rush was good. Gave up a couple of long pass plays on one drive. Ability to cover vs. quality passers is still a concern. - Offense was rough in the first 2 1/2 quarters. Was much more productive with Sivori than Pooler due to Sivori’s ability to run. - Punter has a really strong leg but needs better placement when punting deep into opponents territory. Kicked 2 into the end zone when he could have pinned Desales deep. He had a couple of other booming punts that really flipped the field position. He can be a weapon. - Overall a much-needed win on short preparation.

Kuddos to both schools for making this happen on such short notice. At this point, it important to just be able to play a game, any game, on a Friday night. The defensive preparation for St. X in playing DeSales should not be extremely different from playing Manual due to the "run the ball" nature of both teams, so there should be some carryover there. As far as predictions go, it is hard to do so with such little preparation for both teams. Pretty much anything could happen. I am just glad they are playing.

The practice intensity, lack of physicality, and game intensity of the current program at St. X are embarrassing, especially on offense. Granted, Trinity is the more experienced and more talented team this year. But there is no excuse to have -9 yards rushing in a game. There is also no excuse to go 4-22 in the passing game when your head coach is supposedly a passing expert. There is a difference in talent level between the two programs. But not as much difference I showed him the game. I am actually a lot more disappointed in the results of the Bowling Green game but I am of the Trinity game. We shall see what the Tigers are made of this week against Manual.

I am not saying they need to be the second coming of 1990's Nebraska in the running game, but they need to be able to consistently rush in the 150 range to be competitive with quality teams. That is also assuming that the passing game makes progress as well. I am more concerned about the line play/blocking in the running game than the running backs. There was just not much room to run. And it was not like BG played a stacked box against them. Also, I need to give BG credit for being ready to play play. BG did not play a real clean game, but they were persistent, resilient, and physical.

Ending the game with zero rushing yards is totally unacceptable. I’m not sure the running game is truly important to the head coach. It seems like an afterthought to me.

Actually, the defense played terrible. The Bowling Green turnovers and bobbled center snaps were the only thing that really kept the game close. Bowling Green drove the ball at will.

The continued theme for St. X the past few years on offense has been a complete lack of a running game versus quality opponents. BG played a solid game but actually made more mistakes than X did with turnovers and botched shotgun snaps. BG was BY FAR the more physical team.

The Tigers must improve in the lines of scrimmage if they hope to contend in 6A. That part of their game has gone downhill significantly since the Glaser regime.

Two years ago, when they had Rondale Moore, a very accurate but weak-armed QB, and a below average offensive line, Trinity was mostly in spread, no-huddle on offense that featured a quick passing game and jet sweeps. This year, they were under center A LOT with multiple TE’s and sometimes a fullback. In the championship game, they ran the ball 50 times and threw it 15. That is not the Bob Beatty offense of just 2 years ago or especially when he first came to Trinity. In high school football, the best programs tweak their schemes to fit the strengths of that team while maintaining the core of their system. They also have answers to situational football. Trinity does this well. Even in years where they primarily feature the spread, they have a short yardage and goalline offense. In years when they feature the power running game, they have the capacity to spread it out. That is good coaching.

Bottom line is that there will be complaining no matter the format. The thing I like most about the imperfect ranking system we have now is that it gives the best teams, no matter their geography, the best chance at making the finals. And that ranking is earned in the regular season.

That was the case for several years in the beginning of 4A football in the state. The state at-large champ played the Jefferson Co. champ.

Both of the Male games, the Trinity game, and the first Manual game were lost in the lines of scrimmage. That should be embarrassing for the St. X program with a tradition of developing linemen. Surprisingly, the Tigers were not significantly beaten on the perimeter; they were soundly beaten physically. Coach Wallace is a successful coach, but he is a “get the ball out in space” coach. 6A football is won in the lines of scrimmage. Is it necessary to have good skill players? Yes. But it is imperative to win the physical battle. St. X must improve the physicality in the program to get back on top.

Congrats to Coach Bronger. Getting to practice on Thanksgiving his last year is a special treat.

I have no problem with a playoff game played at a home field whatever the conditions as long as the team that has earned the right to host the game wants it there. If the home team wants to move it to a neutral site with better field conditions, then so be it. If a particular team wants to play a playoff game at the site of their choice, then win in the regular season to secure that right.

I have zero problems with how any team handles JV. There are many variables to consider as to what is the “right” way to handle it. To me, it is up to the head coach to handle the JV situation to do what is best for his team. JV is purely developmental. While the JV records are meaningless, the reps are valuable.
