theguru
I understand Coach Borchers has been trying to light a fire under his team and promised some full equipment practices this week. I was told that last night's practice was extremely long and grueling in the heat and it has the natives restless. Can anyone confirm or deny that? What is going on at Cooper? BigTuna6
Shouldn't they always practice in full equipment? Typically you do 1 full padded practice, 2 practices in shells, and a walkthrough in helmets (this could also be shells).

rjs4470
Shouldn't they always practice in full equipment? As was mentioned, most teams only do 1 or two days in full gear, with limited contact during the season.
ColonelPops
What would the natives be restless about?
rjs4470
Is this the highschool rules or Cooper rules? Common sense rules. You can’t grind your team in full gear and contact every day during the season.

I never said anything about full contact. But kids should be in full gear just so they are used to running in full gear.
BCHS-BLUEBIRD
Seems a little crazy to me with the recent deaths to try to prove that point if your not happy with your team. I heard they had a kid go to the hospital afterwards. SMH

If the natives are getting restless, then they shouldn't be. If I heard correctly they also pushed the time back of when their practice started. This way it wouldn't be in the hottest part of the day. The state also has rules in place for heat and being allowed in full contact. Which even though it was hot, I'm sure it was still well within the legal rules allowed. So i see no problem with practicing yesterday in full gear. Especially since it was within the rules, meaning if they had to play a game yesterday. The game would have been played in that same weather in full gear. So as long as there were long water breaks. Which I am sure there was. Then I am not sure what there would be to be restless about. I have a hard time believing anyone would be mad about players being in full gear yesterday if it was for a game. So I see nothing to be restless about. Especially with as people noted. Its typical for most teams to be full gear for a Monday practice.
Colonels_Wear_Blue
Sounds like a scene out of Varsity Blues, based on what I've heard.

Its typical for most teams to be full gear for a Monday practice. From what I've been told, water breaks were issued every 15 minutes. I know the trainer at Cooper personally and he is a stickler for the rules and the coaches there all respect and listen to him when he says they have to modify practice. As for parents getting restless... well that's every year. Including the State Runner Up year.

Typically full pads brings on more contact. Coaches at most schools typically drop full padded practices down to save kids legs from carrying the extra weight. Dead legs is a real thing! In a shells practice, typically tackling is reduced to wrapping and running the feet compared to taking teammates to the ground.
